I was very good place it's something design

This was the third project Houseworks did for us - this time a kitchen remodel. Their work is excellent and the team was great to work work. Beautiful job. Will use them again.

From my first meeting with Jeff, and throughout the construction process, he and his team were a pleasure to work with. We have used Houseworks since 2008, when we first bought our house and found extensive undetected dry rot. They kept us informed of the changing scope of work and developing and executing the repairs and did a wonderful job of restoring the façade of the house to its original state.

In 2015 we contacted them for a major kitchen and bathroom remodel. We had ideas and with owner Jeff Kann’s guidance we finalized the plans and began the remodel. The crew from top to bottom are professional, competent and responsive. They kept us informed of the schedule of activities and cleaned up every day. They were very considerate and kept the parts of the house not involved in the remodel as clean and untouched.

They have many contacts, for example, a structural engineer for earthquake retrofit consultation and a consultant for a greywater system. Houseworks also has strong partnerships with quality vendors and subcontractors.

The budget was on our high end, however there were no surprises, we got what we wanted, they guarantee their work and we are very happy with the results. We would highly recommend Houseworks for both larger projects like these and have used them more recently for smaller projects.

We've had the pleasure of working with HOUSEWORKS since 2015 on several projects. The first, and largest, was a major remodel of the main floor of our home, where we revamped the floorplan to move our kitchen and a bathroom. As projects like this tend to go, there were some surprises along the way, but the team handled them with the utmost professionalism and grace. Most importantly, they still finished the project on time, which was especially critical for us, as we were expecting our first child within weeks of the anticipated end date of the project. All of the crew members were exceptionally friendly and were excellent at keeping the space clean at the end of every workday. Jeff in particular is a dream to work with - no question is too small, and he is wonderful at keeping open lines of communication. HOUSEWORKS transformed our home into the dream space we had always envisioned, and because of that, they're our go-to contractor for other jobs, including a few smaller exterior projects since our larger remodel. Our only regret is not working with them sooner!

We used Houseworks for a home remodel in San Francisco. After long research and frustration about how contractors communicate in this market Jeff was very responsive and frank in his assessment of the project. His timeline and cost assessment were more realistic than others. The workers were always polite and nice to work with when we were on site. The quality of the work was always excellent; the finished carpentry, the painting, the plumbing, tile work. We had two bathrooms done and added a staircase and two bedrooms thus converting a garage into separate bedrooms for the kids. The materials used were top rate. The designer was very competent and helpful in picking out fixtures and colors. After a few months only things are small issues like a light switch and a little touch up so overall very impressed with quality of work; at no time was I pressed to think I could have found better subcontractors and scheduled the work better myself. I would recommend them to friends and family. Remodel work is expensive and so I am glad I went with Houseworks as I felt I could trust their competence and follow through in a difficult market. Jeff and his team are good natured and professional in demeanor which I found refreshing in a bewildering process of city regs and scheduling subs. They even tried to make things as square and right as possible in the most crooked city on many levels...I am glad we used them for our work.

Excellent experience with Houseworks on a major remodel of a Victorian in San Francisco. The scope was very extensive and involved, and Houseworks handled it with total professionalism from start to finish. The team manged to work through convoluted permitting issues and executed the work with excellent quality workmanship and, perhaps most amazingly, totally on schedule. The lead on-site builder was stellar (highly capable, efficient, excellent attention to detail), the subcontractors chosen for the job were all top notch, and the project head was a complete professional throughout with great communication, sound judgment, and consistent responsiveness. Highly recommend Houseworks for a job done right and done on time.

Housework remodeled our Kitchen and Patio. From start to finish, communication with their team felt smooth. Everything was well organized and they paid a lot of attention to details. The whole process of a major renovation ended up being much easier than we had expected. Were very happy with the quality of the work and the final results!

I hired Houseworks for a good size house remodel-every room was touched in some way, including adding a second floor balcony with the doors and windows to access it, 4 bathrooms, lots of lighting and electrical, turning a storage area into a permitted bedroom and bathroom. Houseworks was great to work with because their designers and builders work together to make sure everything is right. They appear pricier than other alternatives, but every aspect of their work was done well and now after 2 1/2 years of living in the space I can tell you that all of the work was top-notch. I actually think they save you money by doing things well the first time. When we had a couple of small post construction issues, including a ceiling fan that decided to become noisy they came right over even a year later to fix it. They are very communicative, did not go over budget at all. Any changes to original spec were facilitated through change requests which I had to sign off on to make sure I understood what was happening. At the end of the project I received a binder with all of the documentation from systems they had installed such as plumbing fixtures, jetted tub, lighting etc. budgeting information, which is good to save for when you sell your house so that you can apply the cost of your remodel against your capital gains on the property.

We contracted with Houseworks for a long overdue kitchen remodel in our Victorian flat. From the outset, they helped us focus on our priorities and advised us on our options. Through weekly meetings, Cory and Cody cheerfully and patiently guided us through the process and provided us with detailed schedule and budget updates. After taking our kitchen down to the studs, the build-out was done with great care and attention to detail. Ricardo, the lead builder, was a true craftsman, a delight to work with and did a great job coordinating and scheduling the other workers on the team. Whenever a problem was encountered he was quick to provide an effective solution. We’re thrilled with the outcome and happy to be back in our new and much improved kitchen.

We worked with Houseworks on a full kitchen remodel down to the studs for our Miraloma Park home in San Francisco, and we truly enjoyed the process from start to finish.

This is clearly a premium product, and it shows. The design process was thoughtful and iterative, and the construction team was outstanding—professional, reliable, and highly skilled. The workmanship is top-notch.

My father-in-law, who has built several homes, was especially impressed with the framing and carpentry, which says a lot about the quality behind the walls as well as what’s visible.

The project included a new skylight, custom cabinetry, a beautiful countertop, a window bench, two custom-built closets, and premium appliances. The end result is a dream kitchen—both functional and beautiful.

We just finished a whole home renovation with Houseworks and would highly recommend them to anyone thinking about starting a home improvement project. Our project in particular included the removal of the center patio in the middle of our house and incorporating that space into our kitchen. Houseworks has been great to work with from start to finish - expertly guiding us through the design process, helping us identify and make choices for our home, and seamlessly transitioning us from design to construction.

They have been great for people like us who do not have the time nor the experience to manage a project of this magnitude. If it’s within your budget to use a design-build firm, we highly recommend Houseworks. They have been worth every penny for us!

Terrible service, everyone was rude and snarky

We had an awful experience and strongly recommend the others avoid this contractor.

I'll share a bit about our experience below, in the hope that it helps others avoid a costly and stressful construction fiasco.

Themes
- The team on the ground had terrible attitudes, no passion for the work, zero respect for the opportunity. Lots of hiding issues from us, aggressive, argumentative with us and also our neighbors. It was painful to work with them.
- Major workmanship issues across all trades: electrical, plumbing, flooring, doors, drywall and plaster, wallpaper, painting, stone and tile, finish carpentry, cabinetry.
- Regularly sent invoices despite incomplete and defective work, under threat of abandoning the project and leaving us and our young baby without a place to live.

Select examples of poor work quality:
- walls have pits and bumps everywhere
- destroyed our brand new custom cabinetry
- ruined brand new, freshly installed oak hardwood floors with major dents, punctures, and gauges
- plumbing issues
- damaged brand new countertops
- no light switches to operate some lights/fans
- damaged tile/grout. voids where grout was missed entirely.
- damaged many of our finish materials (bathroom mirror scratches and dents, missing parts, scratches on brand new hardware, cabinetry damaged)
- damaged windows

Houseworks walked off the job despite major workmanship issues and incomplete work that we had already paid for. This, after running 5 months late on a 5 month project (and still never finished).

We now have to hire another contractor to fix the damages and complete the work.

We got taken for a very expensive, very long nightmare construction project with Houseworks, but you don't have to. Save yourself the stress and disappointment.

I saw another review on Yelp where the reviewer refers to the owner Jeff as a con artist. You should read it.
