I highly recommend working with the Keil team. I worked with Keil Construction for an extensive kitchen and back patio renovation in a 120-year-old home on the Hill that involved many tricky elements, including re-routing plumbing, replacing and installing new flooring to match existing flooring, significant electrical work, stair removal, etc. Jeff is an expert contractor and construction professional with decades of experience who knows every trade extremely well, has exacting standards and excellent attention to detail, and finds creative and clever solutions to unexpected curveballs. His team, including JJ, Evan, and Mariana, was also a pleasure to work with in terms of keeping everything on track. Keil's construction professionals are very skilled, courteous, and do excellent work. There were no surprises in terms of unexpected costs. I would run -- not walk -- to Keil and away from the competitors if considering a major project.

Keil Construction renovated our kitchen and two baths, installed a new heating and cooling system, installed new flooring throughout, and rewired our house. They worked on every room. Now, we wake up every morning to what feels like a brand new, yet familiar home. We’d rehire Keil Construction without hesitation.
It’s inevitable with a project of this size to have problems and mistakes along the way. I worried we would sign with a contractor who would stonewall, make excuses, charge us for surprise costs, or even walk away. Instead, Jeff Keil was straightforward, fair (generous at times), and present when we needed him.
We worked with a great architect before and throughout construction (Mike Fowler--also highly recommend), and we met regularly with Jeff to discuss progress and identify pressing issues. He addressed problems quickly, and added creative solutions to problems we didn’t even recognize.
The Keil crew built custom closets for us and did the same for our bathroom vanity. The quality is much better and the price was more than fair, probably less expensive. Jeff suggested adding window transoms above doorways in a dark hallway, vastly increasing light. They repurposed bricks from a previously unknown chimney to reface our sad looking garage. When the new fencing wasn’t as tall as the plans called for or when the furnace system wasn’t the right kind, Jeff simply made things right, no questions asked. The office team helped keep things on track.
Remodeling is inherently stressful, but Keil Construction made things as easy for us as possible. The workmanship is extraordinary, and the results make us happy every day. -
Jeff Keil is honest and dedicated to his work. His crew is friendly. It was a pleasure to work with him on my house.

We’ve worked with Jeff and his team on multiple comprehensive projects and have always been happy with the results. We particularly appreciated his extensive knowledge of historic properties and his team’s ability to preserve a property’s historic nature while modernizing and maximizing its livability.

Jeff is very knowledgeable about renovations and had many creative ideas on how to control costs. He also pushed for some nice ideas that we incorporated in our renovation. His team of tradespeople are very good at finishes!

Met with Jeff today it’s clear his Knowledge and understanding of construction and the nuances of construction in dc is very clear. His staff are great communicators and they were prompt in scheduling an appointment. There is no doubt that if your looking to renovate a home in dc soon especially on Capitol Hill you should consider speaking with Keil construction.

We hired Keil Construction to build a 1400 sq. ft, two-story carriage house in the rear of our historic property on Capitol Hill. This was a major project that would not have been possible without the expertise of Jeff Keil and his team. All of the work Keil Const. provided was high-quality, super-efficient and economical. Despite starting this project in the midst of the Covid era, Keil Const. was able to finish it as planned and as budgeted without sacrificing the quality of the work in any way. On the contrary, the quality of work was second to none due to the high caliber of the Keil team members and the great amount of collective pride they take in their work. Several of the carpenters and employees have been a part of the team working on Washington homes for many years. As a result, Keil Const. is able to provide an unmatchable commitment to the artistic and historic character of our neighborhood. Our project required the partial removal of a beautiful, old limestone wall. Keil Const. saved every one of the stones and incorporated them into the foundation of the new building and landscaping, providing an ambiance to the project that no totally new-material project could ever achieve.
The Keil Construction team is 100% top-notch. We highly recommend them for any project.

Living in century old house, problems seem to pop up. For my house that I have owned for a couple of years now, my joists were getting extremely loose. This stemmed from a previous owner remodel.
I reached out to Keil and they came out to look at the issue. We discussed the options, and of course I went for the higher cost becuase I didn't want to see the beam. Plus they centered the light fixture in the dining room for me and installed a new chandelier!
The workers were professional and courteous. The end results... you cannot even tell that they ripped open the walls and ceiling.
I highly recommend using Keil, because for the price, customer service and product, in my opinion, you cannot top them. You need to have a certain amount of trust in construction workers that they know what they are doing. They are the professionals, I am just the customer. They did consult with me on a couple of issues that popped up. We discussed and I trusted them to do the right thing.
I will be using Keil again for future remodelling jobs. -
We are so pleased with the work Keil Construction did for us on our recent renovation, and we are thoroughly enjoying the results. Jeff Keil’s crew converted what had been a kitchen/half-bath/laundry space into a beautiful kitchen, renovated a bathroom, built stairs that reconnected our basement (that they renovated) to the main part of the house, moved our laundry, and more.
Keil’s crew was incredibly responsive to our needs and concerns, and worked with us to ensure the results aligned with our vision for the space. After demolition was completed, we met weekly with Jeff and our project manager to walk through the work area, discuss progress, and plan next steps. For example, when we were concerned about the placement of a window and how cabinets would obstruct its light in our renovated kitchen, Jeff had his crew shift it.
Jeff has years of experience working on old homes, and this was evident from our conversations and work with him. He also has an appreciation for the character of old homes, and salvages and re-purposes elements when he can. When there was a need for flooring to match our 100+ year-old wooden floorboards, Jeff had it. When we needed a new steam radiator that would match others in the house, Jeff had it.
When an exterior door needed replacement, Jeff suggested we remove the transom above it and install a taller door with a glass pane. He also suggested that we retain the look of old, patchy paint on a newly-exposed brick wall in our basement. Both of these suggestions were not something we would have considered on our own, but the taller door looks stunning, and the partially-painted exposed brick has so much character.
Having been in the business for many years, Jeff has connections with excellent appliance, cabinet, and other vendors. He helped connect us with them, and his crew worked directly with these vendors to coordinate and handle the deliveries. And at no point did we feel that Jeff was throwing our business to cronies in order to gouge us on costs.
We highly recommend working with Keil Construction. As one would expect on any major project, it took longer than we’d hoped, but overall we were happy with Jeff Keil’s desire to make sure we were satisfied, and the work his team did on this project. We plan to hire his team again for other projects. -
My wife and I first used Keil Construction 18 years ago to remodel our master bedroom and bath and to install an oak floor in the master bedroom, a few years later Keil Construction installed oak flooring in our guest room, ten tears ago Keil Construction built a family room on the back of our house and most recently, just last month, (August 2022) the company repaired and refinished our first floor oak flooring and removed cork flooring from the kitchen and Family room and installed new oak flooring. All has been made to look like an entirely new oak floor installation on the first floor of our Capitol Hill home. The quality of Keil Construction’s work is simply outstanding and their cost is reasonable—frequently the low bid. My wife and I have lived on Capitol Hill for 24 years. We have seen examples of Keil Construction’s work in other homes. It is always impressive.

I hired Keil Construction to fully renovate my Capitol Hill row house, and they did an amazing job. Not only did the owner Jeff talk with me regularly about the vision I had for the place, but his team made my ideas become a reality. This is a company that cares about keeping the character of old DC homes but can mix in classic and modern designs. Most importantly, everything was done without cutting corners and with attention to detail. A year later, I'm still in love with the place.

We had an amazing experience with Jeff and team. From start to finish, the team was professional and proactive in managing and executing on our project. Jeff transformed our galley hill kitchen to a whole new open experience which included new everything and adding new flooring to our old flooring in a seamless fashion. Jeff knows these houses and gave us new ideas that enhanced the original design in so many ways. His team does amazing prep to ensure the project was minimally disruptive and were great at the back end on clean up. In addition, the team was very kind and professional.
With that great experience, on a whim, we converted our laundry room into a bathroom/laundry room and we were equally happy with that project.
We now have a truly functioning, beautiful and modern home on the hill. -
We have used Keil Construction for all of our renovations for over 15 years and have always been impressed with their fresh ideas, super high quality work, competitive pricing, and impressive outcomes. The company's project managers are responsive and knowledgable about every aspect of their projects and are both friendly, responsive, and honest to work with. The projects they complete on our house are both functional and appealing and receive many compliments from our house guests.

We’ve worked with Jeff and his team on a few projects; a substantial build of finishing off new space in the house as well as smaller projects both inside and out of the home. He and his crew are very responsive, do great work, are timely and have a strong eye for finishing details that really make the end result shine! Not to mention they really understand Capital Hill homes, their history and ways to preserve their charm. We have recommended Jeff to others and are very happy with their work!

We have worked with Keil on a complete remodeling of our kitchen followed by renovations of our two upstairs bathrooms and additional work. I suppose my strongest recommendation is that having gone through a major project with him one, we re-upped to do it again shortly thereafter.
We had some broad ideas of what we thought could be accomplished but were not very dialed in on exactly how it should be done nor on the specific design details. In this way, Jeff was the kind of partner we needed in that we could give him the freedom to sketch a lot of the ideas based upon his experience on the Hill. His main vision for the kitchen was in the same spirit of what we tried to convey, but his realization of it was more ambitious and exciting than we would have proposed left to our own devices. Similarly with the master bath, we gave him some design pieces to work with, but generally had to lean on him to figure out how to make it work. There were certainly ideas that did not resonate with us, and he was good about dropping them and moving on to new solutions when that happened. That said, we did lean heavily on his expertise and without it, I don't know if the projects would have been successful. -
Keil Construction completed a beautiful transformation of my basement which has allowed me to convert my basement into a legal ancillary apartment. Keil Construction is a basement transformation specialist. They dug out my existing basement which had a 6'6 floor-to-ceiling height and raised my finished ceiling height to 8'. The process from start to finish took two years (i.e. contract execution, architectural drawings, permitting, excavation, and build-out), but the Keil Construction team was a wonderful partner throughout the process.
Jeff Keil is an experienced builder and an expert when confronting the challenges of older, historic homes and correcting previous misguided renovations. My basement had its particular challenges in that my plumbing infrastructure, including the sewer line needed to be replaced and re-routed. Problems that cropped up during the construction phase were attended to quickly and mitigated.
Keil Construction is the construction/renovation partner you want in taking original wood and historic houses to a higher level and achieve beautiful results. -
We have previously used Keil Construction to update both full bathrooms in our home with excellent results. Jeff and his team delivered results that met or exceeded our expectations in every way. In particular their craftsmanship and attention to details is as good as any contractor working on the Hill. Most recently we had Jeff and crew deliver two projects that transformed spaces in our home. On the lower level, he added a wall that created a private living space for our college aged son. On the main level, he totally remade a tired mantle and shelving with updated yet classic finishes. In typical fashion, Jeff was able to procure materials that made each project special. Over-sized 4 ft by 8 ft doors created a dramatic barn door wall downstairs. Upstairs, reclaimed over-sized trusses became floating shelves and a long abandoned fireplace surround has a new life. We highly and confidently recommend Keil Construction.

We hired Keil construction to help us get our recently purchased row home ready for our family. The job entailed gutting and replacing three bathrooms as well as a complete basement apartment renovation and whole house interior painting. The quality of the work was excellent. As is often the case when opening walls in old homes, unexpected problems arose. Keil's response was regularly, "We can take care of that." Their attention to detail and care for historic preservation is what sets them apart. They not only protected the historic character of our home, but enhanced it in many ways, including reinstalling a long-forgotten pocket door, refinishing radiators, and custom carpentry. We would 100% work with them again.

We had such a great experience with Keil Construction and especially with the owner Jeff Keil. We had a complete gut renovation of our 1925 Capitol Hill townhouse and set up a weekly meeting with Jeff and our architect. Those meetings helped us quickly move through any issues that came up and also spared us lots of headaches.
Our renovation took about a year from start to finish and we continue to appreciate the quality of the work, and also greatly valued the expertise provided by Jeff.
Every big renovation has challenges but we really felt as though Jeff and his team provided good efforts on getting to the finish. -
Renovating an 1890 row house in a historic district requires an understanding of old homes that most contractors do not have. Keil Construction does. To the degree it was possible we wanted to keep historic features of our home intact. Jeff was the only contractor I interviewed who understood and fully supported our wishes. And he has an encyclopedic knowledge of techniques, materials and replacement materials needed to renovate this these old homes. The homes original wood doors were not trashed, the original chandeliers (in terrible shape) were repurposed because Keil Construction knows who can perform these specialized restorations. And when something was just too far gone to save (like the patterned tin ceiling in the kitchen) they knew that the pattern was still in use and where to buy it. The crew then proceeded to make it look even better than I could have imagined.

Our Keil-built basement is gorgeous! Jeff Keil and his many teams were super-professional and communicative and detail-oriented as they transformed our rowhouse, making it totally doable to get one-third of our home gutted and rebuilt even as our family worked at home all year during the pandemic. Jeff has a strong, big-picture design vision which was super helpful when we weren’t sure what to do. He also cares about the details as if it was your own home and doesn’t hesitate to come redo something or tweak it until it’s right.
