My house is 115 years-old and it has single-pipe steam heat (radiators and a boiler). Maintaining and operating a steam-heating system are equal parts art and science. When working properly, the radiators are awesome and provide a comfortable, even heat throughout the house. When something isn’t right with the system — it’s terrible (some radiators are cold, some blazing hot, water hammer in pipes, etc).

Do a Google search on the history of single-pipe steam heat and you’ll find it was common from the late 1800’s through the 1920’s. Because of this, many of the HVAC guys who really know how a steam-heating system should be set up and maintained are either dead or long-retired. There aren’t many left who really know how it works and can keep a steam system running properly.

If you remember the TV Show, “The A-Team,” you might recall it opened with, “...if you have a problem...if nobody else can help...and if you can find them, maybe you can hire the A-Team.” MIke Masciantonio and his guys are the A-Team of HVAC professionals. They have a great understanding of my steam-heating system, have kept it tuned-up and (very important) showed me some of the simple things a homeowner can do to ensure it runs properly (keep an eye on water level, pull some of the dirty water from wet-return line to keep things clean, etc). Unlike newer homes with forced-hot-air where the homeowner can simply touch the thermostat and pretty much forget about things, a steam system requires a little more attention.

Before bringing in Masciantonio, my wife said I was in danger of turning into the dad from the movie, “A Christmas Story,” since I’d often disappear into our basement on cold winter nights and direct a string of profanities at our boiler.

Mike Masciantonio and his team got everything working right and I’m no longer cursing at the boiler and radiators. All rooms in the house are warm and comfortable. Life is good.

Masciantonio is wonderful to work with. There has been many occasions where I as a business owner have been out of town and something has broke in our HVAC system and they get out there right away. They are timely, professional and do great work. They've never kept us waiting and have been great resources for us throughout our many years in business!

I have a home warranty on one of my rental units. Normally, Masciantonio is my HVAC company but I had to use the warranty people for an A/C breakdown. The company fixed my A/C unit but told me that my condenser was clogged and needed to be acid washed at a price of $295. I told them I would take care of it. Masciantonio went out preparing to do the job but called me from the house to tell me that it was not true and they weren't going to take my money. Since I had to pay a call charge anyway, they gave the unit a good going over and everything was fine!

I've had them out four times. Once for an emergency, once for an urgent issue, and twice for maintenance. When I called to schedule for the first time, an emergency, I told them I had an anxious dog who has a lot of bark and no bite. She immediately said she was going to send John. He's been great every time, both with Baylee and with the work that he does.
