Manny sent Jerry to investigate, and initially, he seemed knowledgeable about the problem, but his approach didn't quite add up. He mentioned that the pilot was strong and suggested that it might be an older heater, which isn't the case – I'd bought this one ten years ago for $1,500.

Jerry offered to replace the valve, which was supposed to cost him $80.00 five years ago when installed on another heater, but had skyrocketed to $119.00 recently. He claimed it was more expensive due to Manny's being a licensed HVAC company. I'm not sure if that's a legitimate reason for such a significant price hike.

The new technician was more thorough in his investigation and identified the issue with the thermopile. I ended up buying another thermopile for $29.00, which solved the problem immediately.

In contrast, Manny's charged me $95.00, which doesn't seem like a fair price considering what they provided. If Jerry had replaced the valve correctly, it would have still failed due to the underlying issue with the thermopile.
