Everyone is asking us about the ADU that we built in Santa Clara. My answer is simple: just look at the construction. ADU Builders Bay Area is more expensive of the 3 contractors we interviewed, but if you look closer, you see why. The insulation is R-21 while the code is R-19. The soundproofing in the shared wall is so good we can’t even hear our tenants. All the plumbing is premium brand fittings, not builder grade. From contract to key, the project did take 11 months due to a long permit review. There were delays that were infinitely frustrating. A year later with zero callbacks or issues and a tenant who loves how solid everything is, I don’t think about the wait anymore. They built for long-lasting quality, not just to check a box. If you’re going to own this property for a long time, that quality is an investment that pays off every single day.

This was our first experience with an ADU project, and in all fairness, we had no idea what we were doing. A friend of ours who had just completed a similar build suggested we contact ADU Builders Bay Area, so we at least explored it and called for a consultation. I'm so glad we did.

Right from the beginning, staff had everything appear so much simpler. We met Andrew, who went out and visited our property to give us a tour. From the moment we got there, it was clear he was an expert. He went through everything that we could actually build, what we could actually do, and how the entire process was going to work from simple design concepts all the way through to permit approval, inspections, and final construction.

The most impressive thing was that they did not just give us a cookie-cutter response. They listened to what we needed and took the time to fully understand, and even offered some creative suggestions for how we could best utilize the space and create lasting value for the property. We had originally thought we would simply build something basic, but with their input, we have a configuration that works for our lifestyle much better and actually adds to the overall equity more than we expected.
The process itself was incredibly smooth. The staff handled it all, negotiating with the city, getting permits, arranging for inspections, and keeping us up to date at each turn. We were never left in the dark, and they were quick to respond whenever we phoned with a question. It was just such a relief not to have to chase someone down or dig through confused paperwork ourselves.

Looking back, I'm thankful beyond words that we didn't go the route of contracting with a general contractor and attempting to piece things together ourselves. ADU Builders Bay Area did this project and not only made it possible, but even enjoyable. The ADU well-built room that we're proud of — and best of all, that we know was done properly.
Huge thanks to the whole team. We’re already thinking about doing a second unit on another property, and there’s no doubt in our minds who we’ll be calling when the time comes.

Our project was not easy. We have a giant oak tree with a protection order and our lot is sloped. It’s a nightmare. ADU Builders Bay Area solved it with confidence. Their designer came up with a great wrap-around design that preserved the tree and the slope. Construction was hard, and the foreman, Hector, told us everything they were doing to safeguard the tree roots. Yes, it was costly. Yes, it was time-consuming. But they built us something that was unique and beautiful. It was worth every dollar and every day.

We converting the garage which originally accommodated two cars in Sunnyvale was the first step for us to modernize to a JADU. After several other consultations, we decided to go with ADU Builders Bay Area as they provided the most comprehensive proposal. Transitioning to the construction phase was very swift. However, on the public agency side, we experienced delays on the permits for the project. During this time, Jessica, our project manager, was very understanding of our concerns. Nevertheless, the quality of the craftsmanship is outstanding, the added unit is a wonderful, legitimate rental, which is helping us cover a big part of our mortgage, and for that we are very grateful.

ADU Builders Bay Area completed our detached unit in Palo Alto as promised. The budget was clear, and the timeline was realistic. The final result looks professional and is ready for use.

At the outset, we only wanted a rudimentary studio ADU. We received exactly what we wanted with no deviations, a basic and wonderfully constructed ADU. Everything went as planned. Their entire crew maintained a level of professionalism and courtesy rarely seen in construction projects. They stuck to the updated schedule and finished on time, with the only potential delays being on the side of the permitting authorities. What we spent was reasonable and the outcome matched our expectations, ultimately receiving what was promised.

Thank you, ADU Builders Bay Area.

We decided to build an ADU for my sister, who just moved back to California. She wanted a bit of privacy, and we wanted to keep the family close. ADU Builders Bay Area helped us create a floor plan that worked for both the property and her needs.
The design phase was collaborative, and they patiently handled our changing ideas about layout. Construction had its bumps and there was a delay with a some delivery, but they adjusted the schedule to keep things on track.

What I appreciated most was the transparency. There were no hidden costs, and no vague answers. The final product blends in so well with the main house that visitors think it has always been there. My sister moved in last month and couldn’t be happier.

I live in Southern California but built an ADU on my property in Los Altos. ADU Builders Bay Area set up a shared folder where I could see weekly progress photos and updates. There were two rounds of corrections from the city, and they handled both quickly without requiring me to fly up. I was concerned about managing a project from far away, but they made it surprisingly easy. My tenants moved in shortly after the final inspection, and everything has gone smoothly so far.

I approached this project strictly as an investment. The crew delivered on time and kept the financials clear. Their weekly progress reports were useful for tracking expenses against rental potential. The unit was completed to code, and I signed a tenant within two weeks of the final inspection. From a return-on-investment perspective, the process made sense.

As a civil engineer, I have a reputation for being a troublesome client. I know what I am talking about when it comes to construction, from load calculations to drainage plans to shear walls. I chose ADU Builders Bay Area for my construction, and it was not a difficult decision considering my other options, as most competitors were filled with technical blunders, while ADU was the only one with a solid first draft. Leo, my superintendent, had no concerns with me showing up with a laser level. He took the measurements and said, “Check this pour.” Or, “Want to see the rebar before we close it up?” He was running the site with a high level of engineering precision. When I questioned a specification of a beam, he swiftly retrieved the stamped engineer's report from his truck. This was not just construction; this was a collaborative firm for execution of a technical plan. Their subcontractors, to no surprise, were also top-tier. The electrician and plumber were intimately familiar with the codes. There was no other joy for a professional who can’t turn off their brain than collaborating with such a competent team. They value the science of construction just as much as the art.

My mother-in-law is in India. We’ve been trying to bring her here for years, but finding housing in reasonable proximity to us is a tough nut to crack and the immigration process is a snail’s pace. So when her visa finally arrived in our house last year, we had about six months to sort this out. Our house in Santa Clara is hardly big enough for the four of us in our household now.

So we decided to build our ADU in the backyard. I had a few builders that I looked into but a coworker said his Brother in Law at ADU Builders Bay Area were amazing. We met with the project manager which was Mike. We sat with him and went over all of the details that we had discussed. How long it would take, our budget and that our Mother In Law does not speak much English and likes to do things her way.

Mike listened. No hawking "our product" or making big promises. He asked what her needs would be, essentially asking a battery of questions about her expected habits and potential requirements. Will she be cooking much, will she need to say her prayers, and so on. We hadn't really thought of those kinds of things.

It took about 5 months. There was a bit of a hold up with permits, like 6 weeks, but Mike kept us in the loop about what was going on. Overall the guys were really nice. They worked around our schedule which was a big deal. My husband started bringing them coffee in the morning and they would catch up on everything that was going on.

My in law house in the back yard is finished. Its small, but fine. 500 square feet, one bedroom, a decent kitchen and a nice bathroom. Mother in law has been living there for 3 months now. She has her own space, her own kitchen for cooking what she wants, and visits us sometimes for dinner. Mostly we leave her be. She likes being left alone and seems content. She's started a small garden in the back yard now.

It was a family matter, not a financial issue. ADU Builders Bay Area captured our vision. They enabled us to be a family again. Thank you for your priceless work.

ADU Builders Bay Area totally turned things around for my family. When I lost my job during the pandemic, we had trouble keeping up with the house payments for like, two years. We used up all our credit and almost lost the house. Building an ADU was a last-ditch thing – we used my husband's retirement money, which was scary. But the finance folks helped us get it all set up right. The construction crew worked fast – they knew we didn't have much time. When our first renters (a nice family who'd lost their home in the fires) moved in, and we got that first payment, it was such a relief. We can chill out now, finally. The extra money covers most of our house payment. The ADU's really well built - it's all solid and good quality. They don't just put up buildings; they help people feel safe and secure.

Turning our garage into an ADU was quite the experience! After doing a ton of research, we chose ADU Builders Bay Area. We were a bit worried about such a big project, but they had a great rep and kept us in the loop the whole time, which made us feel good about going ahead.
Basically, we wanted to turn our garage into a small apartment with a bedroom, bathroom, kitchen, and living room. From the start, the team really listened to what we wanted and explained everything clearly. They paid close to what they did, making sure the ADU was both useful and looked great.
What I liked most was that they were flexible and willing to work with us. They let us fine-tune the design, making sure the final space worked well. They also did great work, and use great materials.
The communication was also spot-on the team. The team always gave us updates and took the time to come by and talk us through everything, which was super helpful. We felt like we were part of the team, not just customers. Now that it’s all done, we’re so happy with our new ADU, it’s even better than we’d hoped!
If you’re thinking about converting your garage, I highly recommend ADU Builders Bay Area. They really do a great job, and made the whole process a lot easier. We’ll definitely call them again!

The communication was good, the pricing was fair, and they finished the ADU pretty much on schedule. There were a few small items left to address at the end, but they came back quickly to fix them. Overall, it was a positive experience.

About 6 months ago, my hubby and I decided to build a 450 sq. ft. ADU in our backyard so that we could have a bit more space and freedom for our family. We discussed it with a few companies and landed on ADU Builders Bay Area—and we're absolutely thrilled that we did.The entire unit turned out great. It has everything we ever wanted: cozy bedroom, complete kitchen, bright living room, and even a laundry area with washer and dryer. It is a small unit, perhaps, but it feels so well-designed and snug. You can tell there was true thought put into the design and the details.
What actually made the experience so great was the staff. Anyone who came out to work on the project was courteous, professional, and clearly took pride in what they were doing. The materials and craftsmanship used were top notch, and we never felt like corners were being cut.
Now that it's finished, it's become one of our favorite things about the property. Whether or not we use it for visitors or as a rental down the road, we know it'll be a rad space. Big thanks to the whole team at ADU Builders Bay Area!

This company was wonderful to work with because they kept everything real. Right from the start, everything was as expected. Max, our sales guy, even told us how long the permits would take at the most. He was like, I’ll tell you the worst case scenario for permits, so anything faster is a bonus for you. And that is exactly how it was. We knew San Jose was going to take a long time with the permits so because we expected it, we were not stressed. Anna, the project manager, was extremely organized. She made a timeline for us on Google Sheets, and every Friday she would color code it. Green meant we were on schedule, yellow meant there is a possible delay, and red meant someone needed to do something because there was a stop. We never had to ask her for updates. When the entire country ran out of windows, she put a yellow line on our sheet and a note weeks before the window install was supposed to happen. The note explained the window situation and the new expected install date she had given us. We really appreciated how honest they were. I like that we were informed at every stage of the process. It made us feel in control.

It is very helpful to have systems that alleviate stress, especially when building things.

Our collaboration with ADU Builders Bay Area on our JADU project delivered an outstanding experience throughout its entirety. The team demonstrated expertise and professionalism while making the process appear effortless. Through their guidance we navigated the myriad regulations alongside permits and inspections to ensure all processes were executed correctly and with efficiency.
The element that emerged as most distinctive was the exceptional structuring of their methodological approach. Throughout the design phase they meticulously examined each detail to assist us in developing a layout that maximized our spatial resources. Throughout the construction phase they maintained their involvement to ensure adherence to the plans while responding to any queries that arose.
The project approaches its final stages and we find ourselves exceedingly pleased with the outcomes. Our vision became reality through ADU Builders Bay Area's work which leads me to strongly endorse their services.

We live in a standard San Jose neighborhood and needed more space for our growing family and my mother, who could no longer live alone. I contacted ADU Builders Bay Area and they offered us a detached two story ADU. The design phase was a partnership and they helped us pick a plan that fit our space needs without overtaking our yard. David as project manager was our direct contact, and we appreciated the weekly updates. There was a frustrating delay on custom windows, but David was upfront about the wait and the impact it would made and the other parts of the project which was appreciated. She has her own space now, and we have peace of mind that she’s close. The quality is good and the team was respectful of our space.

As first-time homeowners, the idea of building an ADU was challenging. We wanted to make a separate living space for a home office, and for future guests. The team at ADU Builders Bay Area deserve the credit. David walked us through every step, in plain, uncomplicated terms, at a comfortable pace, and was always willing to answer our questions. There was a small problem with flooring installation where we had a chipped tile. We mentioned it, and without any problem, they had the entire section redone within a week. The service was outstanding and the dedication to getting it right was remarkable. It created a beautiful space and it has helped increase the value of our property tremendously.

When we contacted ADU Builders Bay Area, the experience was completely different. From the very first call, their team was helpful, transparent, and willing to answer all our questions without any pressure. Nina took our address and, within a day, sent us a detailed report outlining the best ADU options for our lot, including size restrictions and layout possibilities.

Their pricing was competitive compared to other companies, and the entire construction process was handled smoothly from start to finish. They kept us updated regularly through email, which made everything so much easier. What we appreciated the most was how they prioritized our needs, offering great advice on how to maximize the rental potential of our ADU. Overall, working with ADU Builders Bay Area was a fantastic experience, and we’d highly recommend them to anyone considering an ADU!

When I received a notice for having a dwelling without a permit, I felt lost. A friend suggested I contact ADU Builders Bay Area, and I'm really glad I did. Handling county notices can be overwhelming, but their team guided me through each step, which greatly eased my stress. They managed everything, from creating plans to remove the unpermitted areas to designing a new ADU. The permits went through without any trouble, and during construction, they constantly updated me with photos and videos. My ADU is now complete, and I am truly happy with how it turned out. The work quality is exceptional, and it's clear they take pride in their craftsmanship. Having a trustworthy team manage the permits, paperwork, and construction was a huge relief. If you need a reliable company that genuinely cares about their clients, I highly recommend ADU Builders Bay Area!
