I was told that they have free estimates, when the estimator called he said he would charge me 1,500 for just estimating the job before I even hire them. I was also insulted and called a "tire kicker" for not immediately hiring them for a job.

The first review posted here is 1000% different than our experience. Let me explain our experience when they finished our basement totaling over 1,600 square feet including a kitchen, bedroom, study, family room, workout room and full bathroom. We selected ALH from a list of contractors compiled from several different sources including Angie's List, NARI, those we met at the KC Homes Show and recommendations from friends. ALH's bid was within $1,000 of the other 'finalist' but what put ALH over the finish line was their straight forward way and professional manner. The whole ALH team was great to work with. Owner Allen Harris clearly knows his stuff and is a perfectionist. Rob who handles scheduling and day-to-day project management was on top of the seemingly thousands of details. Our lead carpenter, Jim Auld, was the best. Beyond being a great craftsman and is also a bit of a perfectionist (in a good way); plus he's just a good guy as our two-year old really took to him. In a project this size, it does sometimes feel like the contractor moves in with you so having people you want to be in your house and around your family is more important than money. ALH did a great job of managing a long list of sub-contractors and a few technical and design challenges -- this was the equivalent almost of building a new house (both in cost and size). ALH's ability to organize everything was a huge weight off of our shoulders. Moreover, their attention to detail meant that it was a rare case where we had to point out something we were unhappy about. In fact, more than once, we thought something was fine and ALH would re-do it or have the sub-contractor re-do it because it was not quite up to their standards. ALH's attention to detail shows and we love the final result. They came in on time and very close to the original budget (not including all of the changes we kept making -- but that was our own fault!). We've already hired ALH to tackle another project for us.

ALH has done 2 major renovations (kitchen and master bedroom/bathroom/closet) and 2 smaller projects (redesigning large slanted windows and fixing heated tile after an interior plumbing job) in our mid-century modern house. In each case they have been completely professional and thoughtful in coming up with designs appropriate to our home. They have given us a calendar upfront and stuck with it throughout the project and have come up with creative solutions to unanticipated problems as needed. We highly recommend them.

ALH is the only company I will use to do work on my home. They have remodeled my kitchen, half bath, master bath, back windows and front entry. Their pricing is upfront and transparent. There are no “surprises” and the work is always done on time. Their process is personal from beginning of the project to the end. All of their employees and sub contractors are excellent craftsmen. ALH uses Co-Construct to manage the project. This process keeps the owner informed of each and every detail of the project along with a cost analysis and a Change Order system. I can not say enough good things about ALH. Simply stated, I will never use anyone else.
