Landscaping reviews in Poolesville, Maryland

We had a large 50 year old dying tree removed from our yard. We also had a tree next to it trimmed. The crew arrived, worked diligently and safely to complete the job causing us no distractions. We’re a family of 5 all quarantined- that’s impressive! The area was cleaned up well and looks great. We saved some little log pieces of the tree for kids to play and balance on. We’re so happy it was such an easy process! Thank you!

This is the most professional tree service I have ever dealt with. It is the second time I am using them to remove a large tree. I will never again bother to get multiple estimates. Their arborist Jimmy made the entire process of estimate, contract, and checking up on the work completely seemless. The crew was terrific in not only doing the work very professionally and cleaning the area afterward, they went out of their way to ensure that my wife and I were totally satisfied. On my wife's request to have part of the tree trunk to make a table, they cut it exactly to her specifications. I had two other estimates ---- one somewhat higher and the other competitive with Hughes. I didn't even consider using either of the other two because they didn't seem very professional and wouldn't even give me a written estimate with conditions of work.

Hughes did all the work agreed to and more. The mulch beds were carefully edged. They cleaned up all trimmings and debris. They completed the work within a week after we made the down payment. Their price was reasonable and their proposal and contract was professional in presentation.

Great value. High quality work. Smart team. Super efficient. Had them do the whole yard (big yard), build an out door patio with a fire pit, dry creek bed in the yard to help flow of drainage, planted 15+ trees, also bushes, shrubs , huge stones, and irrigated my entire back yard so it drained efficiently. John Hughes may be the best in the business!

Hughes Landscaping is the best. I have a heavily wooded yard so leaf removal is challenging but Dave Fyock’s team gets it done quickly and efficiently. I also have a very steep driveway and without Dave’s team I would have been snowed in many times. Truly great service!

We hired hughes earlier this year to mow our property. They come weekly and are very efficient and thorough. Our property looks so much better after they leave. They've worked with us on other projects too like busch hogging very thick areas and have been very reasonable with price. Dave is our contact and is extremely responsive and such a help! Thank you!

I am president of Mutual Eleven at Leisure World. Recently we had a very large project that involved rain water drainage and elected to have Hughes Landscaping deal with it. We could not have made a better decision. They started the work on time, showed up every day and were extremely professional. When I asked a question of them, they fully answered even though they didn't know who I was. I strongly recommend Hughes Landscaping and will be using them for yet another project currently being planned.

Hughes completed redirected the water drainage from a commercial property behind my house. The water has run down the hill for years and recently began to wash the dirt, rocks and debris into my yard. The Hughes team placed the drainage pipes underground and built a concrete retaining wall on the property. They even finished off my yard that had been damaged from years of improper draining. A 4 week project but the men were professional and courteous and did a fabulous job. I can't be more pleased!

I was a customer of Hughes for years for lawn maintenance service. This year, out of the blue, I received an impersonal letter stating that my account was being referred to another provider due to “lack of staff” to do the work. However, several neighbors on my street also use Hughes and they were not dropped. When I called to clarify I was told that lawn-only customers were being referred elsewhere. If they were smart, they would have attempted to upselll me for other services. Instead, they get this public review. I have thankfully found a new local company (not the one they referred me to) and I’m very pleased.
The Hughes team continues to park in front of my driveway when they visit my neighbors to service their yards. These folks do not make good choices with neighbors. -
I've worked with this Jimmy Hopkins and the Hughes team for years. They've completed large and small tasks for me both professionally and personally. Thank you all for your hardwork.

Great experience with the team from Hughes landscaping. I hired them to help with some tree removal from a windstorm. They offered a VERY competetive rate and got me on schedule with very short notice. They were timely, professional, diligent and were extremely safe when removing the trees. I will use them for all of my future needs. Thanks to Jimmy and his team for all the help.

Very disappointed. Hughes's customer service has proven very bad. I cannot recommend them. Their representatives are not responsive and even appear indifferent to winning your business. I have heard similar feedback from other neighbors.
Here are several examples of issues I have had:
1. Failure to provide quotes. I requested a quote for tree and gutter work in August 2023. It's May 2024, and they still have not provided a quote.
2. Failure to respond to messages. The representatives respond erratically (at best) to emails, voicemail, or texts. Sometimes it takes multiple attempts over several weeks to get ahold of them.
3. Overpromising and under-delivering. I met the owner of the company, John Hughes, at a Christmas tree sale in November or December. I mentioned a recurring drainage problem on my property that my Hughes representatives (Dave and Jerry Fyock) had failed to resolve after multiple promptings. John promised that there was more they could do, that he would be very happy to speak with me and even come take a look. So I called the main Hughes line. But I was given the runaround; I could not speak with John, and no message would be relayed to him.
4. Refusal to honor warranty. Hughes installed trees, shrubs, and groundcover on my property that subsequently died. They have not acknowledged my complaint, let alone done anything about it.
5. Refusal to honor promises. I called to request that the lawnmowing team not arrive before 8:30am so that they would not wake sleeping children. They said they could accommodate that request. Three days later the team showed up shortly after 7:30am and woke my kids with their loud gas-powered motors. When I complained, they responded to renege on their promise and suggested I look elsewhere for lawn service. (It was, incidentally, the fastest communication I ever received from them!) Apparently they do not want the business!
If you are in the market for landscaping and lawnwork, I would suggest that you look elsewhere. -
The boss and his crew made the cost of the job worth every last penny. They took down a huge, dead tree next to our pool and removed big, low hanging branches over our parking area. Hughes Landscaping were very knowledgeable, skilled, efficient and gracious. Their work was excellent and a very good value. We highly recommend them.

We used Hughes to install a water intrusion system for our back yard. Dave came out to survey our property the next day, providing an estimate on the spot, and the entire project took only 2 days to complete! Now we can play in our backyard without running through sloppy puddles every day!
Highly recommend and will continue to use them for my landscaping needs! -
Jimmy and his crew were efficient and clean. They took great care to make sure that our yard was disturbed as little as possible while doing work on two trees in the front and three in the back. They were even able to take care of a last minute problem tree that I asked them to remove the day of. Jim is an Absolute professional and very knowledgeable about each type of tree we have on our property. I will be using Hughes and this crew for all of my tree care needs from now on.

The actual work crew deserves credit for being timely, efficient, and hard working; however, Hughes Landscaping failed to meet our expectations in every other aspect of our interactions with them and, as such, cost the company a potential long-term customer. Jimmy, the arborist, lacked basic communication skills and failed to follow-up on several topics, prompting us to call the main business office for assistance. When he finally returned our messages, Jimmy was arrogant, condescending, and rude. Hughes eventually sent a second individual, Tim (?), to follow-up on outstanding requests for a) assistance selecting and purchasing replacement trees for several dead trees removed from the property and b) to initiate plans for hardscape and landscape installations over the fall/winter/spring time frame. Tim began the appointment by boasting "I am the owner's best friend. Mr. Hughes is my best friend, and that's why I am here" yet did not seem to understand why we were meeting and did not provide any assistance beyond promising to have a tree estimate ready within 24 hours and having a landscape designer call within the week. Two weeks have passed, and we still have not received a call from anyone at Hughes to discuss either project despite the fact we reiterated over and over and over again to both men that time was of the essence, as we wanted the trees planted before the ground froze. In comparison, we were able to contact, schedule and meet one of Hughes' competitors (Good Earth) within a three day period.
Frankly, customer service is the only thing separating the various landscaping companies serving Potomac, and Hughes failed to meet our expectations. I understand business is good for them right now, but the company owners should consider how long that will remain true if this is their standard of customer service. -
We can't say enough about how pleased we are with how our yard is maintained throughout the different seasons, thanks to Hughes Landscaping. With my significant other and I working full time jobs & being away from our home a majority of the week.. maintaining our property has been a huge stressor for the both of us. Hughes Landscaping is a shining example of excellence always going above and beyond everything we asked for. Every team member we have encountered was friendly, polite and accommodating. We have already had several people stop to ask what company regularly maintains our property. Rest assured that we will be telling everyone about Hughes Landscaping!

Wyatt & team did an amazing job clearing a HUGE tree that had fallen in our yard! They were prompt, professional, and thorough!

Our deck was in disrepair after years of wear. Hughes Landscaping took on our deck, trellis, and railing system and we now have an oasis in our backyard. Tim Gardner was an excellent communicator and facilitator for design aspects, product quality, and always went the extra mile to work with us daily. His crew was on time, worked diligently, and communicated with us about small details as well, led by Levy.
Tim is a 5-star Project Manager. We highly recommend Hughes Landscaping to our neighbors and friends.

Carter and John were amazing! They were the only company to give me an honest no bull-shit solution for my yard, and took the time and dedication to come back twice to find a reliable solution. I really appreciated the up-front work they were willing to do. Thanks guys!

2024 Update: We remain very happy with Hughes Landscaping. Tim Gardner is our project manager; he is such a pro and works so well with both us as homeowners and his crews (many of whom have been here at our house year after year).
We highly recommend Hughes Landscaping for all your yard needs--tree work, hardscaping, landscaping, regular lawn mowing. It's a pleasure to have them here! We are big fans of Hughes Landscaping!
