Landscaping reviews in Springfield, Massachusetts

I had an 11am meeting set up with Stephen to look at a commercial job that I was interested in him doing. He was aware I was driving from 4 hours away to meet him. At 11:20 no sign of him, so I call. At first, he didn’t realize who I was, then said okay, I’ll be right over. When he finally arrived, at 11:30, I simply said “not a great way to start a relationship “ to which he turned around, waved, got in his truck and left. Clearly unprofessional but also just plain weird

We were so happy to find Stephen after we called 5 other companies trying to get a quote for redoing the hard scaping of our pool side. Stephen gave us a very reasonable and accurate estimated price and the actual cost is right around the estimate. His work crew is very professional and efficient. During the process, Stephe proactively communicated with us to make sure everything was what we wanted. The hard scaping was beautifully done and was what we expected. We highly recommend Stephen!

Steve is an incredible person. He hired me 5 years ago when I first came to US and offered to stay at his house. He has very strong and experienced crew, who will get the quality job done fast. I definitely recommend this landscaping firm to anyone!

I'd like to leave a detailed review of my experience working with Stephen A Roberts Landscape. I was assigned Steve Roach to work with my own design ideas and make my vision come to life. There was a lot of back and forth with revisions to plan my compact backyard space. I found some scaling issues with early design iterations so I worked off Steve's plan and made adjustments so the plantings had room to grow. Steve recommended lots of plantings that I sifted through. I suggested replacements for the ones I didn't love and he made the changes happen. He was professional even though I asked for many changes throughout the early planning phases.
Once work began, things moved along quickly as my backyard was fully transformed. A delay in pavers held up progress on the patio for a while but it wasn't their fault as the manufacturer couldn't handle the demand. The patio did turn out beautifully and exactly how I wanted it. The crew was kind and helpful and installed my pondless fountain I purchased for the project.
The aforementioned delay did allow some of my plants to dry out during their care for them. They admitted they weren't properly irrigated and the delay allowed them to wither. They claimed they would replace them if they didn't recover next year but I was still disappointed that my new hydrangea tree flowers had all dried up. A few of the perennials were also very tiny and barely noticeable but most seem healthy now. I was actually disappointed in the volume of plantings as I had a lot of beds to fill and I prefer a dense, filled in look. I spent over $1000 on my own nursery sourced plantings to make it my own and really fill in the beds with colors. The larger trees they sourced looked beautiful and I look forward to seeing them mature over the years. I would have never been able to plant trees that large myself.
To shade my new patio, I had ordered a pavilion kit from a pergola kits USA. Steve claimed it would be possible for the crew to assemble based on the instructions. They gave me a time estimate and quote which seamed reasonable and saved me having to find someone else to assembled it. Unfortunately, upon starting this unwieldy kit it became evident this was not a simple 2 day project. Frank worked very hard to solve the logistical problems of this part of the project with the help of me and the rest of the crew. It took far longer than I was initially promised but he clearly put lots of thought and care into doing it the right way. I recommend finding a crew that specializes in construction for any job of this scope because this crew lacked the equipment and manpower to make it happen in a reasonable amount of time. The bill for the labor and construction portion was very high due to this.
Overall, my impressions are mostly positive. This is my first ever landscape project as a new home owner. The crew was great and everyone was professional. I would recommend working with them if you have a larger budget and want care and quality put into the project. -
Stephen Roberts designed and executed a large and complex landscape project at my home in Longmeadow in the spring of 2020. We wanted to replace almost the entire front landscaping of the house, but we did want to keep some shrubs and plantings in the back and have him work around a large deck project. He had a blank slate in some areas and some tight (owner specified) constrictions in others. Stephen was extraordinarily knowledgeable about what plantings would work in different situations. He worked extremely well in concert with other contractors and two months in, the project looks fantastic. We threw a few curveballs at him along the way which he handled with ease. His crew was solid, he was in budget, and the outcome has added a great deal of value to our home.

Contacted Steve to move a shed. He came to see the project and he gave me a fair quote. Communication was a bit of a challenge sometimes but he did excellent, professional work and his crew was nice also. Work completed in a few hours on 7/14/20. There was some damage to my lawn but he told me this might happen and it was to be expected, not really worried about it. Workmanship: 5. Communication: 3.5. Professionalism: 5. I would contact Steve for future projects and would recommend him to a friend.

I can't say enough wonderful things about this company! They created beautiful paths and patios at our home which had just been renovated. Where we had mud, they worked tirelessly to put in grass and plantings that totally enhance our property. Steve is amazing- he cares about your project, has creative ideas, and this is reflected in his workers' attitudes. They are all excellent as well as being kind and courteous.
Steve worked quickly and did not go over budget. -
We chose to work with Stephen A. Roberts Landscape based on their professional and friendly approach to the process. They were able to interpret our ideas into a workable and beautiful plan for our back yard. Our project included new stone patios and pathways plus plantings. The design team including Stephen Roberts and Connor Malloy were so wonderful to work with. Together they have great knowledge of the materials and knew how they would fit with our ideas and yard. The build out team Julian and Isael were SOO hard working and very pleasant to work with on a day-to-day basis. Julian is a master at laying stone. I was so amazed that after working hard all day they would make sure the yard was very tidy. The designer, Connor Malloy was always ready to discuss the day-to-day progress and ready to handle or adjust things that arose as the work was being done. The whole project went so well and the final results are stunning. We would highly recommend working with Stephen A. Roberts and cannot say enough about the design work and hands-on work ethic of Connor Malloy.

Before I got my hot tub delivered, I needed a concrete pad. My electrician recommended Stephen Roberts. I was beyond pleased with their work. Everyone was kind, respectful, and extremely polite. They showed patience when I asked multiple questions!
Upon the completion of that job, Stephen and I discussed future projects. (This conversation was initiated by me because I was so pleased with them and I felt that they were the company to be trusted for future projects.)
A couple months later, I hired them again to add a concrete pad that I found necessary. While here, Stephen and I discussed ideas for a project that will take place next spring. And he had his crew do some of the prep work.
Again, everyone was so polite, kind, and respectful.
I am very grateful that my electrician recommended this company and look forward to future projects with great happiness -
If you want to transform your yard into a year-round paradise, call Stephen Roberts. After extensive on-site discussions to set our plans, Stephen's hard-working and caring crew was off and running in April 2023. Under Stephen's initial supervision all kinds of projects were completed last year-spring and fall clean-up and mulching; landscaping our backyard "mountain," clearing backyard trees to open up our forest; planting flowers, bushes and trees all around our 3 acres; mowing and RAKING our lawn; pruning and transplanting trees; bringing new life to our current landscape; installing lighting and an irrigation system for our mountain. Believe it or not, we even had our new plantings weeded and watered while we were away.
Yes, I can keep going! My husband found Stephen R. Roberts Landscaping on the internet and it will be our company forever. -
I've worked with Stephen Roberts on two projects so far: the hardscaping and initial plantings for my backyard garden in 2019, and a Goshen stone retaining wall for my front yard in 2025. The work has been top-notch and I've been able to make use of every inch of my property, planting a perennial pollinator garden and being featured on my city's garden tour multiple times. Stephen's correspondence is always professional and he makes excellent recommendations for any needed changes. I look forward to working with his team again.

Stephen and his team delivered a backyard landscape beyond my wildest imagination. From the online request form, to the initial consultation, to the work performed, it was a top notch experience.
I had contacted a few landscaping companies before contacting Stephen. None of them responded to my outreach. I’m so glad they didn’t!
Stephen was easy to work with: prompt, professional, friendly. His team was incredibly hardworking through very hot summer days doing the prep work and stonework. Plant installation was done in the cooler fall days, just in time for backyard fires in the beautifully created stone fire pit.
He was open to suggestions and also kindly let me know when my ideas weren’t feasible.
He was available for advice after the job was done for how to care for the plants.
I would recommend Stephen and his team for anyone who wants to make an investment in their yard. I know he does other things as well but specifically what was most impressive for me was the design — with detailed, printed plans— and the execution with his knowledge and expertise of plants and an eye for detail. The plant selections he made were perfection. If you’re looking to upgrade your outdoor space, see if Stephen and his team can help you with your project!
