I was hoping to use the fireplace in my old 1920's spanish style home, but wanted to make sure it was safe for use. I called top hat on Dec 28th, scheduled an appointment for the 4th. The man who showed up was very nice. Said that the chimney and fireplace looked good, except that it needs a rain cover and damper, but I could use it. He didn't even climb a ladder to look at the top of the chimney. I thought that was odd, but assumed he knew what he was doing. Later I was going to start a fire, but the fact that he hadn't checked the top of the chimney was nagging at me, so I decided to climb up there and check it myself. Turns out it is sealed with concrete. Oops. Glad I checked, especially considering I have a new baby in the house. Of course, I'll be cancelling the $85 check I wrote.
