Having a really frustrating time with a flooring and carpet install. They couldn't find my measure. After a few days they finallt sorted that out, but the order I placed got lost so I had to do it all over again. It will be over a month before my carpet even ships now I'm told. As far as my laminate they charged me $60 to deliver it ....Then wanted another $100 to carry it inside. What a bunch of BS. I will never use home depot for any sort of home improvement project again. Switching to Lowe's.

Frequently asked questions

  • What does a contractor do?

A contractor handles repair, renovation, construction, and property improvement work. Depending on the project, that may include labor, materials, scheduling, coordination of other trades, and oversight from start to finish.

  • When should I hire a contractor instead of a specialist?

Hire a contractor when the job involves multiple steps, multiple trades, or broader project management. If you only need one narrow task, a specialist may be enough. If the work touches several areas of the home, a contractor is often the better fit.

  • How many estimates should I get?

For most medium or large projects, two or three detailed estimates are a smart range. More than that can create noise unless the scope is clearly defined.

  • Why are contractor quotes so different?

Because scope often differs even when the price sheet looks similar: one quote may include prep, protection, disposal, permits, and finish work, while another leaves those out.

  • Do contractors handle permits?

Some do, some do not, and some only do for certain project types. Always ask before work starts, especially if the job involves plumbing, electrical, structural, or layout changes.

  • What is the biggest mistake homeowners make when hiring?

Choosing based only on price without checking scope, communication, and job fit. The cheapest number can become the most expensive project if expectations are unclear.

  • How do I know if a contractor is a good fit for my project?

Look for experience with similar jobs, clear written estimates, realistic timelines, solid reviews, and direct answers about how they'll manage the work.

  • Should I expect change orders on remodeling work?

Sometimes, yes. Hidden damage, code issues, material changes, or added requests can change the scope. The important part is whether the contractor handles those changes clearly and professionally.
