The service rep (Jeff Rehl) arrived promptly. He was very informative, explained many aspects of how my furnace is working and how it could be improved. The price for the service was much cheaper than I thought it would be!

My old furnace gave out on me so I got an appointment for an inspection. It was going to need a lot of work, so I went with a new system as recommended. A major expense, but didn't seem unreasonable and they have a very convenient financing partner that was able to give me essentially instant approval which helped.
A couple days after the inspection I was able to have the install, so it was just under a week from when I called to having a whole new system put in. From what I can tell they did an excellent job: they were neat in their work, took care to make sure the details were right, took the old system and cleaned everything up after.
Their sizing calculation was for a smaller system than previous and it's a two-stage rather than the previous single stage. I was a bit concerned how that would do, and it took a bit of time to fully reheat the house from 50 to 70, but I really like it now: it runs very quietly and can kick on at a low level to maintain heat while also having plenty of capacity at the higher level when needed.
I had never had annual maintenance done on the system previously. If I had, it may have lasted a bit longer. The new one comes with a ten year warranty on parts and labor, with the labor part requiring annual inspection. So I definitely plan to have them inspect it annually to try to make sure it will last ten plus years. The previous one was about 14 years old, so it feels good to have this squared away for the foreseeable future now.
Alright, I think that covers it. Time for me to get back to work myself. Thank you all; it feels great to have the new furnace! -
The service technician showed up within the stated time. He was very polite and explained very well what the problem was with my furnace. He did the necessary repair and did routine maintenance at my request. All done in little over one hour.

Brandon was very friendly and knowledgeable. Unfortunately he was not able to repair the unit and we've scheduled an appointment for a replacement unit for Tuesday

Very quick response…very nice people…very expensive quote! There was no way we could afford those prices. Sorry. Ordered 2 parts (less than $100) and the leak has stopped. We understand prices have gone up…but close to $1000 for a repair? That’s a lot of labor charge!

Staff was professional and courteous. Tech was scheduled to arrive between 12 and 4; arrived at 4. Fine. Assessed furnace and quoted $1000 for replacement motor of some sort. For no apparent reason the quote changed to $900 before he left. I called a family friend who retired from HVAC work for a second opinion simply because $900 is not pocket change. Family friend stopped by, evaluated the situation and reset the switch that the furnace called for and all is well. $0 fix was all we really needed.

I paid $423.20 for the technician to tell me my furnace was unsafe. This was after a replacement igniter was installed for the amount of $324. 20. That, plus the service call amount comes to $423.20. I am partially disabled and living in a fixed income and now not only do I not have heat but my grocery money for the month is gone. Thanks for nothing.

After arriving back in Springfield, I found my house was about 47º. This was two days before Christmas. The next morning, I called the company that put in my neighbor's AC unit but he couldn't make it until the day after Christmas. So I called Springfield Heating & Cooling. The guy who showed up was from Five Star Home Services. He finished the job in less than two hours. He was good and knowledgeable.
Problems:
• why was he from Five Star when I called Springfield H&C?
• I never got a written estimate or invoice breaking down the price, which would have influenced my decision to have the repair.
• after telling me the price of the part ($1776), he told me that putting that much money into a 30 year old furnace was a lot and started quoting me prices for a new furnace. This was before inspecting my furnace, which he found to be in good condition.
• the price to fix my furnace was $1885, including service call ($99). As mentioned, the part was $1776. I looked up the price of the part (controller board) and it was just under $200, retail. Double that for markup, and that's $400. 1776 - 400 = 1376. That comes out to $688 PER HOUR for labor, diagnosis, & warranty.
• tech told me my filter was a little dirty and took it out but didn't replace it. Surely, he had spares in his van.
The day after Christmas, I called the guy from the other company and asked him what he would have charged to replace a controller board, assuming he didn't know what was wrong with it. He told me $450. I wish I had gotten an estimate from him BEFORE calling Springfield H&C. I guess I'll consider this an expensive life lesson.
I texted them to complain about the price and someone (manager? owner?) called me Monday (12/29) and gave me a $200 credit/refund. That's something, I guess. But it's still over $1200 more than what I could have paid. Lesson learned. I will never use this company again.
