My wife and I recently conducted an extensive remodel of our 3-bed/2 bath condo. We did everything right except for the bathroom upgrades. Our originally intended bathroom contractor left us hanging when he took a much larger job just two days before we expected him to begin the upgrades to our master and guest bathroom. That put us into a time pressure jam. As such, we admittedly performed less than ideal due diligence for a replacement contractor. We opted for a company that did a great job on the new flooring in our condo based on that company’s verbal representations that they also did bathroom remodels. It was my own fault that I did not check their references in this regard. In the end, they did just about everything wrong.

Finding a new contractor was more difficult than expected. First, most of the highly reviewed/rated bathroom contractors on the internet did not want to clean up someone else’s mess. Second, they also were not interested because they would not profit from any redesigning of our bathrooms.

Finally, after extensive research, I decided upon Home Design & Repair (HD&R). The owner (Evan Katz) returned my call and was very upbeat, patient, and empathetic during our initial telephone conversation. After sending him several photos of the work that needed to be done, we spoke again via telephone. I could quickly ascertain that he knew his craft. Evan and two of his co-workers arranged to visit our condo within a couple of days. During that visit, they took their time to assess the extent of the job. I was impressed that they were not rushed, answered all of our questions, explained what needed to be repaired and why, and were open to our ideas. The three men laid out the chronological steps that would need to occur, the potential problems that they might encounter along the way, and alternative strategies in the event any of those problems did materialize. Within a few hours of that initial visit, Evan prepared a detailed quote. Based on my research, I concluded the prices were reasonable. Notably, HD&R provides all materials at cost, which are backed by receipts.

HD&R started the work the following day. They estimated the job would take 3-4 days. In short, the work included replacing drywall, retexturing, and painting two full walls, leveling one vanity, installing mosaic backsplashes in both bathrooms, relocating two electrical outlets, re-installing one toilet, leveling one vanity, installing 9 recessed LED light housings, securing the deck mount faucet/handles on a Roman tub, and re-hanging both vanity mirrors. In addition, the crew installed a mosaic backsplash behind our gas range. The two workers onsite arrived early each day and worked until at least 5:00. We appreciated that they took extra measures to limit the dust and dirt in our home. For instance, the taped down thick paper along all of the walkways inside the unit and hung a lot of plastic in and around the bathrooms. They did not mind our interruptions to ask questions and monitor their progress. In fact, they even asked us several questions along the way in order to improve the likelihood that we would be pleased with the final product. Evan periodically came onsite to supervise their progress and visit with us. From start to finish, Evan always promptly responded to my calls and e-mails.

All of HD&R’s repairs were completed slightly ahead of schedule and reflected excellent craftsmanship. My wife and I could not have been more pleased. I only wish we would have found HD&R before we started the bathroom remodels. However, with that said, there is one silver lining. I already am making a list of additional projects where I will confidently engage the services of HD&R. By his own admission, Evan and his workers cannot do or fix everything. I respect that he will not over-promise and is willing to admit areas where the company does not possess expertise. I have shared with Evan that I am willing to provide personal references for prospective clients.

I used Home Design for some concrete and tile work in my bathroom. Carlos and team did exceptional work, on time and very cost competitive. This company gets it done!

Home Design and Repair was reasonably priced. Work was done on schedule and the workers showed up on time each day. I had multiple projects done ( tile removal, vinyl floor install, baseboard install, drywall work, painting). All workers were professional and courteous. I would recommend Home Design and Repair!

Not sure where to start! We paid $8900 of the $15000 for the worst work ever! I’ve already cut my toe twice on the uneven tile floor which is the worst I’ve ever seen. Don’t let Carlos work on your home!!!! We loved Evan, but he didn’t do the labor on our house. It was the dirtiest, most messiest job we have ever had done on our home! Every single worker were slobs! Our tile floor is so uneven, we trip On it often. The stucco guys, we’re drinking Corona while completing our job and got their stucco on every part of our patio furniture and ruined it all! We did the majority of the demo work, and paid a plumber to install all of our appliances and they still tried to charge us a $1200 fee. We spent almost $7000, to fix their mistakes and to redo the electrical sockets as well as fan replacement as it ran into the new cabinets that they did not measure befour. It cost us twice the amount of money to finish the work and on a daily basis, I am finding more and more errors that we need to have Repaired! We truly liked Evan, but do not feel that he was there enough to supervise the jobs to make sure they were getting done correctly! It cost us twice the amount we expected to pay, just to fix all of the mistakes. I would not recommend them at all!

They guided me through challenging design issues; offered creative advice and then performed the work in a professional and timely fashion.
