It was expected that I be available by cell phone at all times yet AJ’s receptionist, project manager, and owner did not respond to me for three days for a problem that affected our daily business operations. AJ’s promise of a timely and smoothly coordinated project, so far has not been true. Hopefully the end result will be better.

I used AJ's to design and construct a new backyard for our townhouse in the Heights and it is stunning. Jared was very helpful and patient with us as we went through a couple of design revisions. Would highly recommend him to anyone.

UPDATED - AJ's got the project to a state of completion sufficient for us to host our annual Halloween party. I am giving the design 4.5 stars based on the complements we received and the fact that my wife likes it a lot. I deducted 0.5 stars for two design elements that were not functional when translated to reality from the drawings.

The project management gets 2 stars because they sprung so many selections on me at the last minute (poor planning) and they did not have sufficient supervisory oversight to properly manage the project. I had to get involved multiple times to prevent mistakes from occurring due to their failure to ensure that everyone on the jobsite was working with updated plans. So, In my opinion, I paid the general contractor AJ for a significant amount of supervisory oversight that I provided myself.

Overall, 3 stars.

Background:

I signed a contract with AJs in December to build a pool and outdoor kitchen with attendant hardscaping, landscaping and lighting. As expected in West U, permitting took a while, and construction began in May.

I was hesitant to require them to meet a deadline due to uncertainty on timing of permitting, however, I REGRET not at least asking them to provide a reasonable target date to be completed once the permitting is approved, and then putting that in writing, with liquidated damage penalties.

I should have also asked for references and called them.

I picked this company based on a strong referral. They were by far the most expensive quote for a start up job, but I went with them anyway based on the referral. I was unable to book them for maintenance due to quoting me $1,000 per month, but the start up job was set up. The 'landscape manager' would not meet me any day after 5 or on the weekend to walk the property, so it was set up for him to call me while walking the property (their suggestion). I specifically requested he communicate directly with me as I was not there, but he never called me. After receiving the quote, I took half a day off of work to meet him and walk the property. They changed the meeting without asking me first.
The crew finally showed up almost three weeks after we started discussions, did part of the work, and no word on the rest. I was promised day after day they would be there 'that day', and eventually they showed up, drove a truck onto the wet grass leaving ruts (after being told not to), and still not completing the job promised. Five weeks after this whole thing was started, they fixed the ruts with partially dead grass, weeded less than half of my beds, accused me of not watering their dead grass, took pictures of the 25% of the beds they did weed (and those areas are still free of weeds), and told me they do quality work.
I have replaced their grass, and hired another company for maintenance. Amazingly, the maintenance company did everything they agreed to do less than five days after I hired them.
I would strongly recommend looking at other companies before trying this one.

My contract with AJ's stipulated that they were to perform 42 yard services a year. Beginning in March of every year, the service would be weekly. By mid June, we had identified 9 instances when we believed that AJ's did not show up to perform contractually required services. We save the maintenance sheets they provide and there were 9 days missing. We were at home some of these days and know that they did not come by. AJ's failed to provide evidence of this service even when asked on numerous occasions. This request was made to their general maintenance e-mail, to T Polk and to Javier. After sending an initial e-mail expressing concern on this issue, we did not receive a response to the e-mail. When we followed up with a phone call three days later, we were told that no one had read our e-mail yet. The failure to perform services or to provide evidence that they did is the most serious issue. We have filed a complaint with the BBB on this matter.

However, over the course of our relationship we were also disappointed in other things. The contract also requires periodic fertilization. AJ's never provided evidence of doing this service even when asked about it.

After some plants died during the winter frost, they did not offer to replace them or note this on the maintenance sheets we do have. The same things happened with a plant infestation: this was never mentioned in any summaries of our yard. We had to bring it to AJ's attention.

There were also dead spots in our grass which they never mentioned to us and which they could not explain when we pointed them out. In the past, we had caught their personnel urinating in our yard.

There was also damage to our garage, presumably from a lawnmower. AJ's never responded to requests to discuss and resolve this issue.

Finally, after cancelling the service, AJ's tried to charge us for work in subsequent months.

I was very impressed with AJ's landscaping. They have very reasonable prices and still amazing quality. They were efficient, stuck to their word on delivering the services, and were very responsive. We will use them in the future and I recommend them for anyone needing some landscaping help!

We have been customers for several years. With only the rare exception AJ's quality work and reliable communication have been excellent. When issues have surfaced they have been quick to respond and address the problems. Specifically, Brandon Blair is a great customer service asset, and we are happy he is back with AJ's.

We wanted to do a partial renovation of our small backyard space and after seeing what they did for our neighbor, I called AJ’s. Jared came out, looked at our space, and to help be cost effective, took the time to ask what I liked and didn’t like about what we had.

He worked with my comments and came up with a beautiful design that transformed our small space into a beautiful, peaceful garden oasis! I am so pleased with the design as well as his selection of plants that worked perfectly with the existing greenery we wanted to keep.

I had a great experience with AJ's Landscaping. Kendall came out to assess the property in a professional and timely manner and gave an accurate quote compared to the final price that I received. Before we began the project, I sent him an email with several questions and concerns. He promptly responded to all of my questions that same day! I was very pleasure with the final project and the customer service I received! Will definitely be doing business with AJ's again!

I have worked with AJ's Landscaping several times at my house here in the Heights. Without exception, their work is creative and beautiful, professionally done, and reasonably priced. Everyone on their crew works to make sure I am happy with the outcome and they are always polite. I only use AJ's Landscaping and recommend them to anyone who asks.

The care they have taken with all my landscaping work has been nothing short of amazing. Attention to details and the small things, promptness and knowledge of what they do are just some of their attributes. I would give them my highest recommendation and believe me I have used several people throughout the years.

They charge you $150/hour just to meet them & it was in their office, he never had to go to my property? Who charges for an initial meeting to get a quote??? Then says $2500 for design + hourly charge, when I finally got a price out of him it was $7500 for landscape & pool design fees if I use another company & he won't even give you drawing with that price....

What a TOP NOTCH team they have over at Aj's Landscaping! From design, communication, and care throughout the project. They have exceeded my expectations for my pool and landscape!

I recently hired AJ’S landscaping to give me a quote for some landscaping services for a new build.
I initially paid him a deposit of 2500 to start but after a couple meetings, basic sketch,and lay out i decided to go in another direction because of the final astronomical estimate he gave me.
I assumed he was just gonna charge me for whatever services he had done up until that point and refund me back the rest .
To my surprise he said he did way more work than the initial deposit that I gave him which left me flabbergasted,confused and unsure of what services i actually payed for.
After the fact i realized his pricing was ridiculously overpriced compared to other landscaping companies.
If you’re looking for a landscaping company that values honesty, fair pricing, and good customer service, I’d strongly suggest looking elsewhere.

I engaged AJ's Landscaping & Design, Inc. to completely renovate the outside of my home (front, side, and back). It was a very big job so took some time to complete, but at the end of the day I think the outside of my home is absolutely beautiful. One of my favorite features is the A/C Screen that AJ's designed. The previous screen was made from wood. It could be removed in order to service my three A/C units, but that involved removing screws and some heavy lifting. So the A/C technicians used to just squeeze in behind the wood screen when they came to service the units. AJ's replaced the wood screen with one made of light steel designed by the AJ's team and manufactured and installed by Rolando and his crew. The black steel screen matches a lot of the other features in the yard. And the design includes gates that easily swing open to allow access to each of the three A/C units. Last week I had my A/C units serviced and the technician was very pleased with the ease with which he could access the units. In addition, AJ's had thought to install a hose bib just beside the units, which the technician also found very useful for washing out the inside of the A/C housings. I include below three pictures of the A/C screen: one where all the gates are closed, one of the small gate that can be opened to access the irrigation and electrical controls, and one where all the gates are open. If you are looking for an awesome landscape design, or for a beautiful and functional A/C screen, I recommend calling AJ's.

AJ’s replanted a small garden area in front of my house this spring. I specifically asked for plants that are extremely low maintenance and Dan with AJ’s agreed. I also specifically told Dan that I did not want to put in an irrigation system because the area was so small. I have since had multiple issues with the plants they put in and their very poor customer service. To start, I was not made aware of which days they would be coming to my house to start the project. I was also not given proper instructions on how to care for the plants they placed. Even with regular watering, plants in multiple areas have now died and I will have to pull them up. Another guy I have never met, then tried to upsell me an irrigation system over text. I told him that I specifically told Dan that I did not want an irrigation system and asked for Dan to contact me because I have been so unhappy with his services. This was at least a month ago and I have yet to hear back from Dan. This company is THE worst and WAY overpriced. I will never use them again.
