I hired Jean and her team at Clean Genie to clean our rental property in Stowe about a year ago. I have been very happy with their services and have received 5 star ratings and compliments for cleanliness from all of my guests. Horrible. I asked for a deep clean and with a special focus on the baseboards, kitchen cabinets and inside window sills. They spent 5 hours at my house and only cleaned the baseboards, inside of the windows and the surfaces of the floors (the areas i wanted extra focus on). No standard cleaning at all. I have never heard of a la carte a cleaning service. No cleaning of the outside of the windows, skipped the cabinets and above the fridge. They also didn't perform a standard clean. They didn't clean under the beds, dust anything, clean the showers or baths, shelves, kitchen table, or any surfaces. There was a film of dust on the dresser in the kids room, trash left on the floor in the guest room, dust in all the corners etc. Deep cleans should include a standard clean with a focus on the problem areas mentioned. I have never had such bad customer service. The owner told me they only cleaned what i mentioned and told me i had bad communication because i didn't tell them all the specific items i wanted them to clean. Very rude. Do not hire them.

I’m pretty picky when it comes to cleaning, but Clean Genie genuinely impressed me. They didn't just 'surface clean'; they actually took the time to get into the corners and spots most people miss. The crew was super friendly and respectful of my space, and you can tell they actually take pride in what they do. It’s rare to find a service that is both affordable and high-quality, but these guys nailed it. 10/10 would recommend to anyone in the area!

Frequently asked questions
-
What does a contractor do?
A contractor handles repair, renovation, construction, and property improvement work. Depending on the project, that may include labor, materials, scheduling, coordination of other trades, and oversight from start to finish.
-
When should I hire a contractor instead of a specialist?
Hire a contractor when the job involves multiple steps, multiple trades, or broader project management. If you only need one narrow task, a specialist may be enough. If the work touches several areas of the home, a contractor is often the better fit.
-
How many estimates should I get?
For most medium or large projects, two or three detailed estimates are a smart range. More than that can create noise unless the scope is clearly defined.
-
Why are contractor quotes so different?
Because scope often differs even when the price sheet looks similar: one quote may include prep, protection, disposal, permits, and finish work, while another leaves those out.
-
Do contractors handle permits?
Some do, some do not, and some only do for certain project types. Always ask before work starts, especially if the job involves plumbing, electrical, structural, or layout changes.
-
What is the biggest mistake homeowners make when hiring?
Choosing based only on price without checking scope, communication, and job fit. The cheapest number can become the most expensive project if expectations are unclear.
-
How do I know if a contractor is a good fit for my project?
Look for experience with similar jobs, clear written estimates, realistic timelines, solid reviews, and direct answers about how they'll manage the work.
-
Should I expect change orders on remodeling work?
Sometimes, yes. Hidden damage, code issues, material changes, or added requests can change the scope. The important part is whether the contractor handles those changes clearly and professionally.
