Had high hopes that they would be able to solve our drainage problem along our driveway. After the job was completed, we had questions but they consistently responded that there was no problem and did not address our concerns. Whatever they did, it did not work. Paid thousands for them to move dirt around.

The Good: G&R was friendly from the start, gave us positive ideas for our yard, and was receptive at the beginning when we pointed out issues that started to arise. They were at first positive and helpful people.

The best part of the project was their masonry subcontractor, who clearly took great pride in his work and precision, taking time with each and every brick to make sure it was plumb, level, and aesthetically correct. Where there were tricky corners, he spent time scribing angles and notches so that it all fit together correctly. The majority of the masonry on our project is excellent, and is the reason this review carries an extra star.

The Bad: In addition to the retaining walls, our project included a firepit with seating walls, executed by G&R’s own staff, instead of the aforementioned sub. The seating walls are extremely poorly installed: the bricks are not stacked plumb or flush to eachother, they do not maintain a consistent half-overlap pattern, and there are large gaps between bricks. The top caps are not centered; it is visually obvious, there are inconsistent gaps and the angles do not match from stone to stone.

When this was pointed out to G&R, they made a round of improvements. Still, instead of re-stacking bricks correctly to fill gaps and make a consistent pattern, they filled the gaps with mortar, a sloppy fix to say the least.

The landscape lighting installation was a real disappointment as well. For $5,000, they installed a 12v kit from Lowes. The cables were not properly buried, the wire nuts used were too small for the wire gauge, and not all of the wire nuts used were outdoor rated nuts. Extra wire, instead of being cut to length, was piled behind the seating walls and covered with a little bit of dirt and rubble.

The Ugly: Immediately after installation, it became clear that there was a drainage problem within the new retaining wall fill. After a rain, water sits on top of the dirt for days at a time. G&R assured us this was a simple grading issue, so we paid them to do another round of grading and for the installation of sod. It looked great at first, but within weeks, the sod had all drowned, and our mushy, muddy yard was unusable for the entirety of last summer.

G&R identified a new round of draining requirements, which we refused to pay for, believing this should have been considered from the start. After much back and forth, they agreed to come add additional drainage from some gutter downspouts, as well as to install channel drain along the edge of the driveway. The latter was not done; instead, they dug and installed French drain, but left open gravel trenches along the yard. These new French drains do not slope properly, and water collects at the head end instead of draining out the end. Additionally, when they dug for these drains, they tossed the rock and rubble all throughout the yard. Between not installing the edge drain as agreed (and, by the way, I agreed to pay for materials) and strewing shovel after shovel of rock all throughout the yard, my assumption is that this was meant, at worst, as an intentional insult on top of the end of a disastrous project. At best, they just simply don’t care about the quality of their work. The pictures speak for themselves.

We are now in the process of engaging a new contractor to remove at least some of the non-draining fill dirt as well as all the excavation rubble, to replace with proper topsoil that is correctly graded.

Oh, one other thing: In several locations, their dump trucks ran off the edge of our driveway, cracking the concrete. They promised to fix this, but the “fix” was to shove the chunks back into place and pour some quickcrete around the edges to try to hold it in place. At my place of work, when we damage a customer’s property, we are expected to return it to like-new condition.
