Tuck just finished a crazy driveway, patio and shed pad project for me and it is amazing! Seriously, check out the video on You Tube youtu.be/N7MsokkJjB0. My front yard was super steep so he had to dig it out and build retaining walls on either side, wide enough that we could pull in and open the car doors. He also tore out and re did my front walkway, he built stairs from the driveway's center to the walkway, and wound up tearing out my entire old back porch and pouring me a new one with a really nice drainage solution. Then he poured a shed pad complete with a turn around for my motorcycle. The results are absolutely amazing. I have the nicest driveway I've ever seen.

I first contacted Tuck over a year ago to get an estimate, but couldn't pull off a project of that magnitude back then. As soon as I could afford it, I only called him. (And somehow he remembered me from the year before!). He was at our site every day for the entire week and was just great to have around. Even my dog loves this guy. When things went sideways with the shed construction (which was being built by another company) he jumped right in to help and got us back on track. If you're having any work done on your house, call Tuck.

We replaced and enlarged our drive and added pavers for accent, then did a second curb cut and installed ribbon drive of pavers over concrete, plus a bunch of other concrete and gravel leading to our backyard shed site. Tuck did some research and helped us select the materials before we signed the contract. He was onsite for the critical tasks and made decisions that improved the end result at no additional cost, as well as recommended changes that I accepted for an attractive price. No doubt his active participation resulted in a better job than what we had previously designed. His crew is hardworking and careful and tolerated me working with them almost the whole time. They cleaned up well and did a few small extras that enabled us to use 99% of the material purchased. Low waste, quality skilled labor, and flexibility. I could have spent less money with someone else but probably not achieved such good results. So Tuck delivers value. Having personally built a few houses, using contractors for big jobs like concrete that require a crew, Tuck GC exceeded my expectations. And exceeded my wife's -- which I fail to do regularly!

Tuck was honest, responsive, clear in his explanations, and guidance during the permit process. For years, our cars scrapped going in and out of driveway unless you can in on the perfect angle. Tuck spent time with us, understood our problem, worked our situation from many different angels, until we had achieved a workable solution. He worked the permit process with VDOT which included working with the Americans For Disability rules for proper sidewalk, apron, and driveway angles. In one day, his crew pulled our old driveway out, pulled 4 truckloads of dirt to lower the angle, and poured a new driveway and curbing. During the work, we had to modify the design and on that day he was on the phone with VDOT ensuring compliance. Now we can pull in from any angle, at any reasonable speed, backwards or forwards. The driveway is AMAZING. Thank you Tuck for your hands on honest and wonderful service. We are going to be contacting him again for additional work

Tuck GC built a great stacked stone retaining wall with two sections of patio, planters, and a stairwell. He also handled the demo of the existing patio, wall, and stairs. He was diligent and friendly, very easy to work with. Excellent attention to detail and pride in workmanship. The end product looks fantastic, and his price was also great. We hope to work with him again in the future on other home improvement projects.

Tuck GC provided an honest quote, a clearly written contract, pulled all permits, and communicated with me throughout the process. His crew was respectful, performed work out of scope (drainage) that need to be fixed before the driveway pour, and ultimately repoured my driveway, apron, and sidewalk to our Town's standards. My wife and I were extremely impressed with Tuck GC. We found out the owner, James Tuck, went into business himself after being one of the top dogs at another large construction company. He created his own company with the understanding that the best way to complete a project correctly the first time, while also providing top customer service is making a conscious decision to keep his company small.
What a difference. James spent an incredible amount of time with me walking through an outdoor patio project and replacing my roof (separate occasions). As he was reviewing the different projects with me, he would provide me with the positives and negatives of each option. He’d wait for me to ask him, ‘what do you recommend?’. Eventually he realized I was interested in longer lasting quality so he stuck to those suggestions. The amount of construction and county ordinance knowledge he has blew me away.
This is one of the few guys that you can trust to do the project the right way from the start. I highly recommend him AND his team. While our roof was being replaced, there were materials and boxes on the drive way, naturally. My wife was walking to get to the house and one of the crew ran in front of my wife to create a walkway for her to easily get by. Those are details tough to find now-a-days.

Tuck and his crew are AMAZING. Our new driveway looks incredible. I am so glad we had it done. They were extremely fast as well. I chose Tuck because I wanted to have our apron redone as well to match the rest of the driveway. I think a lot of people don't want to go through the hassle of dealing with the DTA and getting approval. Well, Tuck handled ALL OF IT for me, from start to finish. His price was right on point too. Tuck was a pleasure to work with -- listening to us as we explained what we wanted to accomplish with our somewhat complicated driveway that slants down hill toward the house. He recommended ways to improve the slope and also install a drain in front of the garage door to capture the water that had previously been a problem. He worked closely with us on the design in which we had color mixed into the concrete for a subtle earth tone look. The crew was well organized, hard working, fast and neat. The various equipment and concrete trucks arrived like clockwork. The finished driveway is beautiful and exceeds our expectations.

Tuck was a breeze to work with and the new driveway and expanded apron came out amazing. His crew is top notch and worked extremely hard during the two day installation. He communicated throughout the project and took care of all the permits through VDOT for me. We hired Tuck to install concrete for a ~800 sqft driveway, portico walkup, and side trash container storage area in April 2024. We received bids from multiple reputable contractors and Tuck stood out amongst the group because of his knowledge, professionalism, and honesty. Our project was done in conjunction with one of our neighbors who had a similarly sized job and Tuck was very helpful giving us the right info the make an informed decision. Although he wasn't the lowest cost option, his knowledge on how to execute the job given the weather and site conditions made us confident in his ability to install a great driveway. One year later and both our hold driveways are holding up great with no signs of settling. I would 100% go with Tuck for any future concrete work.

There are not words to express how grateful we are for Tuck GC during this snow storm. If his work ethic is like this on all projects, I’d use him for anything!!! You won’t regret your decision using Tuck!!!

Tuck GC did incredible work for me on a high traffic road with difficult access. Driveway and drainage solution turned out great. Tuck was prompt and clear with communication throughout the project and I’m very pleased with the result.

Tuck was super hero this week! He freed us from our ice cliffs at the end out our drive and removed the slalom we called sidewalks He was prompt, communicative and professional! Would recommend!

UPDATE: Tuck came back today, one week later to retrieve his cones and provide one final inspection. He then power washed the street where work was done and power washed our new driveway. He didn't have to do that and yet he did which makes us appreciate him even more. Tuck has exceeded our expectations.

TL;DR Tuck is the man. He knows everything about VDOT aprons and driveways. His reputation precedes him with the VDOT inspectors. His prices are in the mid-high range but you get what you pay for: excellent workmanship, incredible transparent service, and a driveway that will pass inspections.

The Long Version:
Over one week, I interviewed 10 driveway contractors who each had vastly different ideas about what I could legally do to install a driveway in my front yard which at the time had 3 trees, a retaining wall, and no apron (curb cut-out).

One person said I could do it with no permit, wrong. Another said I needed to ask the county, also wrong. And another said I needed to talk to VDOT not the county. After discovering that the last guy was right, I contacted VDOT and became overwhelmed by all of the paperwork I needed to prepare for a permit.

That's when I Googled "VDOT apron" and the first search result was Tuck GC. I read a couple of their articles and knew that these guys could help us.

When Tuck pulled up, he patiently listened as I fumbled my way around explaining what we needed. Then he explained what we could do, what we should do, and provided a few more suggestions that would greatly improve things.

We decided to add a 20' double-car pad and replace our existing walkway since it had no control joints (to prevent cracking). He gave us a rough-estimate right away and came back the next day with a formal proposal.

Let me be clear, Tuck was the first contractor out of 10 to provide a real proposal. One guy actually sent me a photo of his notepad covered in chicken scratch while the rest never even followed up!

Out of the 10 quotes, Tuck's was 4th most expensive. In other words, there were 6 cheaper quotes, and 3 more expensive quotes. But none of those 9 knew how to install a new apron legally. Only Tuck offered to help us from A to Z.

With winter coming, we knew we were in a time crunch because no respectable concrete team would pour in freezing temperatures.

We really wanted to sign the contract but felt that this was a large project for. It was going to be expensive. Tuck was great in helping us adjust the payment into 4 stages. After working that out, we signed the contract and he fulfilled every deliverable.

Tuck quickly got us through permit process, we hired a great tree removal team to take out our 3 trees, and then Tuck kept us in the loop as his crews caught up with all of their prior work. We waited 2-3 weeks and at any point that we had a question or wanted to update him on tree removal, Tuck was just a text away.

Finally, Tuck got us an install date. He took extra care to remind us a day earlier that his team needed the street clear. His reminders helped us coordinate shuffling our cars and our neighbors' cars around.

Installation lasted two days and it went smoother than he had promised. With zero rainfall, his crew wasted no time demolishing the retaining wall and walkway, then prepped our front yard.

The three dump trucks picked up the waste on the first day, and the two concrete trucks with his team poured with precision on the second day. Now here we are on the third day and my wife and I had big, ridiculous grins on our faces as we walked about our new driveway.

We can barely wait the 7 days to finally pull our cars in.
