We needed foundation work for our home in the Oakland/Berkeley hills. Montclair construction made the process easy from start to finish. The end result is a solid sister foundation that makes me very comfortable our problem has been solved. The crew that did the work was first rate and the work was done on schedule. The only down side was an increase in the cost from the original estimate. The additional cost was a bit of a shock but was due to materials cost increase during the Covid pandemic.

I love this company and would hire them again in a minute for any home construction project. They repaired a ground water leak that flowed from the hills above me and down under my garage which is located at street level. A French drain was required in order to re-direct the water flow. This required a massive dig up on the soil surrounding the garage. Not only was the work done on time, but they made drastic improvements to the looks of the surrounding area. What I really appreciated was the effectiveness of Justin and his crew's communication, work ethic and consideration of staying within my budget. This company and the job they did really exceeded my expectations.

I contracted them to inspect and repair some dry rot off a small older deck. During the initial consult I also decided to have them both replace the deck and put in some retaining walls on a steep slope off my garage.

From estimation, construction, and clean up they provided excellent, proactive, and thorough work. They were able so save the floor joists and repair the outside siding. The craftsmanship of both projects exceeded my initial expectations.

I highly recommend their consideration in any of your home repair needs.

Overall, my experience with Montclair Construction was a good one. I wish I had more frequent communication with my project manager about when the project would get started--I was the one to prompt him to find out where we were in the permitting process. I also wanted more communication with Tom, the foreman. He came by the house frequently but I didn't get much information from him until I asked. (Also, a simple introduction to who he is would have been appreciated. I had to ask him his name about the 4th or 5th time he came by.)
As for Misael, the lead contractor, I really like his work. He seems very knowledgeable and fast. I would have appreciated if he and his team wore shoe covers and put down dropcloths without me prompting or putting down dropcloths of my own. I also found it odd that, one morning, the team let themselves into my house through a window. I wasn't home that morning and I understand the urgency, but a text to notify me that they were coming in is absolutely necessary.
I would probably hire Montclair again, with some caveats and specific requests.

Montclair performed work on a multi-part french drain project with efficiency and care. Robert Jarratt and his team collaborated patiently with us on an extended planning and costing exercise prior to our authorizing. The installation team executed according to plan, navigating their way through a number of complexities, in a timely and expert fashion.

The representative that visited was on time to our appointment and was able to communicate a very intelligent analysis of a complex problem. He described the limitations that would not enable Montclair Construction to guarantee the work. We eventually decided not to pursue the project and we appreciated his honesty and the fact that he did not pressure us to hire Montclair but instead seek engineering advice before proceeding with any contractor.

Montclair Construction recently completed a large job for me — foundation, drainage, stairs, chimney, sidewalks & driveway. Everyone was very professional and easy to work with throughout the entire project which was completed ahead of schedule. Excellent design, workmanship, and communication. I’m very happy with the results and would hire them again.

Montclair Construction was punctual, honest and fair, stayed on task, used quality materials and talented workers. --They made our smaller job feel like it was as important as any job they had. Our issues were repaired, and the construction crew left our home better in function and appearance.

We hired Montclair to fix the drainage in the front yard. Robert and his team were professional, fast, communicated effectively, and delivered high quality work. After the 10th atmospheric river our garage is still dry and the drainage works as promised. We are happy we spent the money to get this done by pros.

This fall Montclair Construction worked on a number of projects for me. These projects included multi-level deck repairs, the replacement of support structures and posts, waterproofing one of the decks and redoing the tile. I was immediately impressed with Robert’s professionalism, knowledge, thoroughness, and attention to detail, as well as the timeliness of delivery. He was never late to any of our meetings to discuss the projects and he and the team at Montclair Construction provided updates and contractual information with great care and efficiency. The scope of work for each project was clearly outlined and easy to understand.
I was also impressed by the quality of the work and the professionalism and thoughtfulness of the entire team of workers. Montclair Construction stayed focused on the projects until they were completed. At the end of projects they also did a wonderful job cleaning up and the decks now look much better (and cleaner) than before!
It is important to note, that errors can happen and when they do, what separates a great company from other companies is how they respond to the error. During the project I had to select some tile. Unfortunately, the tile company mixed up my order with another order. Montclair Construction then picked up the incorrect tile by accident. Once they brought the tile to my home it was quickly discovered that the tile was incorrect. After spending some considerable time with the tile company, the correct tile was finally applied to my order. Montclair Construction then did what a great company would and should do, that is, they changed their process to prevent this type of error from happening with future customers and projects.
The only suggestion that I could offer to the company would be to update the email system, as there seemed to be a 2-3 hour delay after a message was sent from their offices.
Again, I highly recommend Montclair Construction & Structure. They are not just a construction company but a partner.

Our 3-month project with With Montclair Construction went surprisingly smoothly and seamlessly! Project Manager, Justin coordinated all the engineering reports, permits, and subcontractors in timely and efficient manner. Foreman, Carlos did an excellent job in communicating all aspects of the project to my husband and me. He was never too busy to answer my questions. Our project was 2 phases--installation of Helical Piers and replacement of front entry stairs. Both portions of the project were executed professionally and efficiently and pretty much stayed within original timeline, with a 3 week extension due to unforeseen termite damage. All subcontractors started on time and with smooth transition from one contractor to another. Carlos and his team stayed with our project daily until completion and Justin met with me and my husband weekly to explain what will be expected for the following week. We couldn't be happier with the work and professionalism of Montclair Construction.

We used Justin and his team to add a deck, install a sliding glass door, add a slab for a hot tub, and install wiring for the hot tub. The entire experience was great. First I would say that the contract is very thorough and offers a clear explanation of what is to be done, what milestone we need to pay, etc. Of course there were issues that came up along the way, but Justin and Javier worked with us to make sure we understood the options and we were happy with the final result. I think the biggest complement that I could give to them is that we decided to use them again to remodel our master bathroom. If you want to find a company that delivers a quality product and is upfront with the costs, then I would highly suggest Montclair construction! Very happy with our front stair rebuild with Montclair Construction. They are responsive, friendly and professional. They did a great job removing and rebuilding the rotted framing, replacing the railing, replacing the tile work and fixing the stucco (even matched the stucco texture!). I would highly recommend them for any construction project, we are looking forward to working with them again on future projects.

Montclair Construction all the way! I contacted them shortly after the major atmospheric storms hit us in early January. We had some flooding in our basement, and realized if we didn't do something about it, it would be more troublesome in the long term. We called Montclair Construction and to our surprise, we got a consultation right away. Shortly after an estimate, we went ahead with a french drain that ran all the way to the street gutter. The team worked very hard; even through some days of rain and mud. The project was completed within a month. They cleaned up, walked us through the new system and left us feeling confident for the next storm. A week later, another atmospheric storm came up on us. What a relief to see that Montclair Construction did a great job--everything held up as promised. Thank you MC for the professionalism and the peace of mind for great construction work!

Montclair Construction did an excellent job rebuilding our back stairs. They produced a solid, attractive set of stairs with no delays at the agreed-upon price. The crew was skilled, hard-working, and professional.

Montclair Construction recently took the entire front off our house and rebuilt it, from the helical pile foundation to the roof, and they did a fantastic job. It was almost a four-month job, and Carlos and his crew were timely, pleasant, and skilled, and kept the worksite tidy throughout. There were very few issues, but when something did come up they were non-defensive and immediately responded and fixed the problem. These were all small issues and easily remedied. Justin Caddy was the project manager and he met with us every week to go over progress and plans, and was easygoing and always super-responsive to any communication. Carlos, the head of the crew, was also a good communicator and very responsive to whatever we asked him to do. We lived in the house through the whole project and they were considerate of our needs. The only added cost over the estimate was some rot that was discovered and had to be dealt with--otherwise they stayed completely within the initial bid. (We had budgeted for an overage so it was all within expected parameters.) We really can't say enough about how good our experience was. We would definitely hire Montclair again for future projects.

After 3 years in the making, Montclair Construction helped rebuild our retaining walls in the backyard. Not only were they ahead of schedule as soon as the permits were through, they helped us understand the permitting process. They were incredibly flexible in either sourcing surprise resources on their side or working with the referrals I found for structural engineering, surveying and more. To top it off they finished a final item after I'd written the last check -- a rare commitment to professionalism.

Montclair Construction did an excellent job reinforcing the substructure of our house. They are a very professional organization with excellent scheduling and customer services. They completed the project on time and within budget. I would recommend them highly.
