Chris is great. I’ve used him for a number of different projects, and he always does exactly what is needed and in a timely matter. Today he came over very quickly and removed some bushes for me. I really appreciate him and his work.

Chris was wonderful to work with. He does high quality work at a fair price. He even dealt with a difficult neighbor respectfully while he was 50ft up in our tree! He works well with the city’s tree maintenance staff and the waste management companies — I will definitely hire him again and recommend him to anyone who needs tree service!

Chris and his crew recently removed a tree from the front yard of my Boulder home. When I was getting estimates for the job, Chris was the only one who made a point of telling me "how" they would remove the tree. The tree was close to the house, a fence, and in the middle of a landscaped garden with lots of flowers, bushes, etc. I watched as Chris climbed the tree and expertly took the tree apart piece by piece, slowly lowering the parts so as not to damage anything. He and his crew walked back and forth through the garden to remove the pieces. Throughout this process no one ever once stepped on any plants. He also removed a dead limb on another tree at no charge. His estimate was fair and he stuck to it. If you are considering other businesses be sure to ask for details on their process. Not everyone will treat your home like it is their own. Chris is a professional and I highly recommend his service.

Perfect customer service! TLC Tree Expert is the Best tree service I’ve ever used. Chris Toney is the owner and arborist. He will come out and bid the job and actually do the job himself. His team of 3 are all arborists. He does what he says, shows up on time, and cleans up when he’s done. He over delivered on his promises.

We found Chris & his team highly professional and efficient. He was always available to answer our questions before scheduling the work, and even arrived early, with all the equipment & team in place ready to go. They had our two large, 50 year old trees taken down, chipped & cleaned up, in an hour & 1/2. as estimated. It was amazing to watch them secure & lift the trees over all our landscaping and out to the street. Great work!

Inconsistent pricing, unreliable scheduling, aggressive communication, threatening and erratic behavior.

UPDATE: A report has been filed with the police regarding the written threats of property damage and the ongoing harassment we have received from the owner. We have provided law enforcement with the documented text messages.

Pricing issues
Chris gave us an initial quote and was very confident, saying that other companies could be ripping us off by including extra work he claimed wasn’t necessary. Once the job had already started, he changed his position and said the extra work might actually be needed. He then tried to charge us an additional amount that was higher than the price quoted by other companies we had contacted.

Scheduling problems
We never got a clear time for estimates or work. I constantly had to ask for an approximate arrival time. When he came on Friday, he worked for less than two hours and then stopped, saying he was “too tired” and would need to come back on Monday to finish.

Unprofessional and aggressive communication
When I followed up on Monday, Chris said he couldn’t come as promised because he wanted to spend time with his kids. He said he could come Tuesday but “don’t know when. maybe late afternoon.” When I told him I was unhappy with that and the possible additional charges, the conversation escalated. He raised his voice, blamed me for “not letting him be with his kids,” and kept yelling. I ended the call to stop the interaction.
After that, he repeatedly called and sent a series of long, hostile text messages. In those messages, he called us “ungrateful,” for him saving us and our tree, and criticized other tree companies, painting himself as the only one who can do the job. Most concerning, he sent a text saying he would come immediately to “undo” his work and that the tree would “fall and hit the house.” Because of how serious that statement was, we told him we would contact the police and take legal action if he intentionally made the tree fall.

Erratic behavior
About 30 minutes after sending the angry messages and blocking my number, Chris showed up at our house acting like a completely different person. He apologized multiple times and even offered to finish all the work for free. We chose to pay the originally agreed-upon price just to end the situation and avoid further conflict.

Sexist and dismissive behavior
Chris was dismissive toward me when I asked questions. His tone was noticeably better when speaking to my husband. In one message, he said that hanging up the phone was “not adult-like” and specifically criticized me for “hanging up on men.”

Bottom line: This was an extremely stressful experience involving unclear pricing, constant schedule changes, aggressive communication, and statements that felt threatening. Chris said that even if we posted a negative review, he “doesn’t care” because he is retiring in 2 years and he has enough clients who “love” him. We would not hire Chris again. If you care about clear estimates, reliability, professionalism, and being treated with respect, I recommend choosing another tree service company.

UPDATE: The owner’s response is a complete fabrication.

False "Free Work" Claim: I never asked for free work. When the owner offered it during one of his "apologetic" moods, we insisted on paying the full agreed price just to be done with him. We have the proof of payment.

Fabricated Threats: I never threatened his website or claimed to "love writing reviews." These are inventions intended to distract from his own behavior.

The Proof: I have archived all time-stamped text messages, including his threat that our “tree would fall and hit the house” and his comments about me “hanging up on men.”

My profile is public; anyone can see his claims about my review history are false. I welcome any legal or police inquiry, as my documentation of his written threats will serve as my defense. I will not be intimidated for sharing a factual account of my experience.

We hired Chris after a windstorm knocked down a large spruce, falling down onto an apple tree. The apple tree was keeping the spruce from damaging a shed and fence in our backyard, but just barely. He responded quickly, gave a bid that was within our expected range (based on other bids), but took the time to walk us through the process, thoroughly explain our options, and offered reassurance while still responding with a sense of urgency. We were nervous seeing so many five star reviews, not sure if they were legitimate- but after working with Chris, we feel confident that he and his team truly do "five star" work and will be reaching out again for preventative maintenance and any future as-needed work that might come up.

Called and Chris he was there in about 10 minutes to walk my property and found out what my needs were. He was professional and very personable. Work was done in a timely manner and completely satisfied with the work itself. Will continue to use them in the further and would definitely recommend them to do your tree work!

Chris and his team did. a great job of trimming our 50 year old silver maple. Chris was prompt, on time and did a great job. Also they did do a good job of cleaning up and also clearing leaves from the gutters just before the snow. I highly recommend Chris and TLC Tree Expert.

We had Chris and TLC Tree Expert come out to trim a few large trees in our yard. From the very beginning, the process was easy. Chris came for the estimate was knowledgeable and gave us a fair price. The crew that did the work was on time, courteous, and clearly knew what they were doing. Even our neighbors said how nice everyone was. The trees look healthy and well-maintained. We have a lot of very tall, challenging trees that are close to the house and other structures and they always take great care to effectively prune and remove trees and branches as needed. Chris was AWESOME. Only tree trimmer we'll need from here on out. He came and walked the property with us, and gave us tons of knowledge on the types of trees we had. His quote was much lower than I expected, and meant we could pay to have him trim several trees we didn't anticipate pruning this year. We were super relieved that we didn't have to remove any trees that were beside the house; Chris assured us they were healthy, and I'm sure they will be for many more years after this pruning. He also noted that our beautiful maple tree in the front yard was splitting, so he bolted that together so it won't split apart and have to be removed! The entire time, Chris and his team were punctual, polite, and cleaned up very well afterwards. Highly recommend TLC!

Milan did an amaaaaaazing job removing a massive tree and stump from our front yard. He and Tim were delightful to work with and were looking forward to working with them in the future.

I had a Tree come down in a snowstorm and Tim was out first thing after the storm to quote it. The price was reasonable and he was able to do the work on the spot. He's very knowledgeable and took the time to explain everything to me, as well as to look at some other trees on the property and answer some questions - I look forward to doing more business with 10 Star later this spring to take care of more of my Tree needs.

Tim gave me a very fair price quote. It took a while to get an appt since they were so backed up, but once they got here about 1 month later, they did a great job, and provided some extra work for at no cost. Looked around Craigslist and found slightly cheaper prices, but went with Tim due to expertise and work quality. Suggest you do the same. Highly recommended!

After his initial inspection of the trees at my recently purchased home, Tim was concerned that some vital treatments for the trees might be overdue. He came by as soon as he had a cancellation, surprisingly fitting me in within a couple of days. He answered all of my questions and gave me advice about tree care I could do on my own. He also made sure to check in with me to look over some thinning that was done to make sure that I was satisfied. All in all, this is an expert service that knows their craft and cares about the customer.

Tim and his crew are the best out there! Not only has he helped me residentially but also professionally. They are always on time and the prices are the best out there for how great of a job they do!!! Very professional team, they go above and beyond. 10 star tree care is the way to go!!!
