I reached out to several businesses and Whitfields was the only place to actually follow up. I was impressed with their clear communication and promptness from the start. I wanted someone with vision and they delivered with ease. I’m thrilled with our yard transformation — it went from a scraggly jungle to a beautiful intentional layout in a day. They told me what they were going to do and then did it on time. And they laughed at my jokes, what more could I want? Hire them!!

I chose this company based on their stated business philosophy and reviews. After personally Interviewing and discussing our project which was to renovate my extensive existing landscaping, we made a verbal agreement to start in the Fall. No deposit was requested but I was told I would be contacted by someone in the Fall. When that never happened, I took the initiative and called them. The person I talked with had no information (file) on our job, but took down our information and told me someone would be contacting me. When once again no call came, I called them. This time I was given an estimate of when someone would be at my property to do the work and, you guessed it, that person not only did not show we were never even contacted to inform us that the work would not be done. I chose Whitfield impart because I felt surely they would care about standing behind their family name, but I guess that is not the case.

The entire team at Whitfield's has been great to work with. Randy came immediately to give us an estimate, which helped us get our project underway when the weather was optimal. Catum and his team did a careful and quality install. And RaeLynn in the office has been there to answer all of my questions. We couldn't be happier with the service we've received, and we'll recommend Whitfield's to anyone.

I contacted this landscaper last year since I wanted to hire a black owned company. They required half of the estimated cost upfront, which I paid.

It was near the end of the year and weather got cold, so I emailed them to hold off until spring this year for a final DESIGN I wanted. Some ideas were discussed last year during an initial visit with owner RAY as to what I wanted.
Since they did not use design software, I wanted to research free software I could use to show them exactly what I wanted to come spring.

Lo and behold, I wake up this week, to work being done on my house without anyone having called to let me know they would start work, or the crew even KNOCKING on my door!!!

By the time I got dressed and went out to meet Ray and his crew, they have put in 3 trees and were half done with some edging. I complained that this not exactly what I wanted for tree placement or edging. Ray, got upset and TOLD me this was what I WANTED when we last spoke at the end of last year.

The initial estimate was very pricey for materials he said would be needed.
(one example is charging $9.50 per EACH basic Creststone Beveled Retaining brick that can be purchased pretty much anywhere for .99 apiece! and 3 yards of brown mulch you can normally get at 3 bucks per 2 cu. yards for $42 dollars)

They DID NOT use all the overpriced materials that were listed on the initial estimate yet, he demanded the FULL price of that estimate.

Again, he attempted to intimidate me by yelling and screaming and the more I attempted to remain calm and reasonable, the more he became irate and basically mumbled something to the effect that; "this is why he only liked to deal with Europeans"...

Catum and crew were great to work with. Fantastic communication, cleaned up our yard when they were done, and did a final walk-through to make sure everything was in tip-top shape. They put in a dry rock bed to help drain the water away from our house. It was well thought out and executed nicely. I will definitely hire them again!

Whitfields have done our HOA’s lawn care and snow removal for 3 years (we have extensive property, private street, and 30 driveways). The rapport we have developed with the owners and workers is exceptional! The quality of their work for us is very good. Communication with the company is excellent—they always check with us if any questions, and are very prompt in returning calls and making adjustments as requested.
Whitfields is a reputable and dependable business offering their services at a reasonable cost!

Excellent work! Thrilled with the results! Owner walked to our neighbor's house to see beginning of what we had in mind and went from our drawing for remaining details specific to our home. The work was beautiful and implemented skillfully from courteous workers, and we will enjoy it for years to come. Estimate was less than competitors estimate as well.

I ran into Mr. Randy Whitfield along a walk. He was very sincere with his knowledge in landscaping and was very professional about this business. If i lived here in Iowa I would go through these guys!

I thought I finally found a lawn service that was willing to provide good customer service.
I needed weed and grub control. Well, that didn't happen, I started to get an over abundance of creeping Charlie in my yard a couple months after the initial treatment. I called and notified them twice about the problem, they took my money, but never came out to treat the issue. Was actually told initially that creeping Charlie was not covered in the weed control, and that I would need to pay additional money for that treatment, but later they redacted that statement and said it was included, but they never did come out and treat the problem. Cancelled them, time to move on, I don't have time for nonsense, let alone paid for it.

I am extremely pleased with the services provided by Whitfield's Lawn & Garden (WLG)! If you are deciding whether or not to DIY, don't do it...just let WLG do it. You'll be happier. 🤩

We had a paver patio installed. WLG was very patient and helpful during our initial conversations about the aesthetics and installation of our patio. They shared pictures of sample work and different types of pavers to help us make an informed decision. The project was estimated to be 3 days, and it was started and completed as expected. The workers who installed the paver patio were timely, professional, and friendly. They also entertained our questions during the installation process, which helped keep us at ease.

Having observed the entire installation, I am so happy we contracted WLG to complete this work. The patio is beautiful, and I am so appreciative of the measures taken by WLG to ensure the quality of our patio. We will use them for future landscaping needs for sure.

Spoke with Randy about what we were looking for and his team put together a proposal that works for our timeline and budget. Super professional and caring. Gave us some great tips on some previous issues we needed addressed and advice on maintenance moving forward for our backyard.

We were also getting the best lawn care we’ve ever received from Ricky. Took great attention to detail and was quick, sharp, and very clean with his work. It looked like a brand-new yard.

Whitfield’s planting staff, who were hired to plant the plants around our new construction at our church, did an excellent job! The staff was energetic and hardworking. They made sure plants were placed where we wanted them. Very conscientious about making sure the area they worked was clean and tidy before they left the job.
    Nice people, very satisfied!

We regret using their service. First of all, they sent an invoice for lawn treatment and for mowing. We didn’t ask for mowing and had to call and have them look at our contract. We were informed by our neighbor, who actually mows our lawn, that they had come out and mowed so once again, had to call and get that charge refunded.
In regards to treatment, we needed to get rid of our creeping Charlie, which they claimed they could do. Unfortunately, it didn’t go away…. and they only sprayed in the yard, not in the rocks/driveway,or sidewalk where it was also growing. Sadly, we overpaid for a service that failed.
In addition, their billing/withdrawal system stinks. Charges for the last two treatments of Oct and Nov were withdrawn in mid January. Yes, there is a contract stating when services will be provided, but no notice of when charges will be withdrawn are ever received. I’ve never had a company not do so. I emailed them after my phone call for a final statement. They sent me my current statement 20mins later and then waited an hour to reply to my request stating they sent it and asked for a review. Ugh.
Allover highly disappointed with their service and I really liked the guy who sold it to us at the home and garden show.

Whitfield Lawn and Garden installed two retaining walls for us this fall. The service was excellent. The workers were professional and meticulous. We were very pleased with the result, and their thorough clean up and reclamation of the lawn. I highly recommend this company.

We hired Whitfield last year for a large landscaping project to remove bushes, lay sod, plant new trees, add a flower bed, etc. We chose them because the owner seemed friendly and like he understood our vision. Unfortunately, that first impression quickly fell apart and the project turned into months of stress, frustration, and disappointment due to terrible communication, unprofessional behavior, and poor workmanship.

From the start, communication was a nightmare. We paid a 50% down payment and didn't hear from them until I called a week later to find out when the job would start. When the day finally came, someone showed up, dumped equipment on our lawn, and left without saying a word. No explanation or follow-up. That set the tone for the entire project.

The work itself was just as bad. They cut corners at every opportunity, leading to mistakes that had to be redone. When they finally said the job was "done," we were horrified at the state they left things. We sent them a detailed list of issues, and while they eventually returned to fix them, the fixes were sloppy.

The shed door is a perfect example. The bottom corner was damaged, with paint peeled off. Their first "repair" was spray-painting it neon orange, which they claimed they color-matched, but it was glaringly obvious they hadn't. Only after we insisted on matching it ourselves and being refunded for the paint did they finally fix it properly.

The yard was a disaster. They left patches of grass scattered with gravel and tossed seed on top, expecting it to grow. Once we pointed it out, they dug up the areas and sodded them properly, but we shouldn't have to intervene to get basic landscaping done right.

Unprofessional behavior was constant. Workers promised to check in after completing tasks and never did. Emails and basic questions went unanswered. During a visit from the owner, we overheard him yelling at the crew and shortly after saw them dig up and redo work they had already spent hours on, yet problems persisted.

To make matters worse, they withdrew the final payment from our account without warning and before the work was finished.

Their landscaping skills were questionable. They planted five trees in the wrong spots, then moved them, but the trees kept falling over. My husband had to replant them several times before someone came out to stake them. Neighbors warned that the stakes could kill the trees and sure enough, three started dying. After a month of constant follow-ups, they finally replaced the trees, but with tiny 1'-2' saplings instead of the 5'-6' trees we paid for. The original trees they planted were already undersized at 3'-4'.

We requested a partial refund for the undersized trees. After weeks of silence, they sent a small refund that didn't make up for the size difference. I spent more weeks sending emails and leaving voicemails that went unanswered. When I was finally able to talk to someone, they blamed the supplier for giving them the wrong size and claimed there was nothing more they could do. They hadn't even thought to ask the supplier for a refund until I suggested it. I had to spell out to them why it made no sense for them to accept the supplier's mistake and that they should be getting a refund to then pass on to us for not receiving what we paid for. At one point, they even suggested that we reach out to the supplier on their behalf. It was so unprofessional. After months of frustration and wasted time, they finally issued a proper refund.

Even after the project concluded, problems continued. Several bushes died within the first year and while they replaced them under warranty, one healthy plant disappeared during the process. They refused responsibility, blaming an animal despite the plant being healthy and untouched before they replaced the adjacent bush.

After all this, there were no apologies, no acknowledgment of mistakes, and no effort to make things right. Whitfield Landscaping cuts corners, communicates terribly, and refuses to take responsibility. We do not recommend them and will never hire them again.
