I've worked with this Jimmy Hopkins and the Hughes team for years. They've completed large and small tasks for me both professionally and personally. Thank you all for your hardwork.

Great experience with the team from Hughes landscaping. I hired them to help with some tree removal from a windstorm. They offered a VERY competetive rate and got me on schedule with very short notice. They were timely, professional, diligent and were extremely safe when removing the trees. I will use them for all of my future needs. Thanks to Jimmy and his team for all the help.

Very disappointed. Hughes's customer service has proven very bad. I cannot recommend them. Their representatives are not responsive and even appear indifferent to winning your business. I have heard similar feedback from other neighbors.
Here are several examples of issues I have had:
1. Failure to provide quotes. I requested a quote for tree and gutter work in August 2023. It's May 2024, and they still have not provided a quote.
2. Failure to respond to messages. The representatives respond erratically (at best) to emails, voicemail, or texts. Sometimes it takes multiple attempts over several weeks to get ahold of them.
3. Overpromising and under-delivering. I met the owner of the company, John Hughes, at a Christmas tree sale in November or December. I mentioned a recurring drainage problem on my property that my Hughes representatives (Dave and Jerry Fyock) had failed to resolve after multiple promptings. John promised that there was more they could do, that he would be very happy to speak with me and even come take a look. So I called the main Hughes line. But I was given the runaround; I could not speak with John, and no message would be relayed to him.
4. Refusal to honor warranty. Hughes installed trees, shrubs, and groundcover on my property that subsequently died. They have not acknowledged my complaint, let alone done anything about it.
5. Refusal to honor promises. I called to request that the lawnmowing team not arrive before 8:30am so that they would not wake sleeping children. They said they could accommodate that request. Three days later the team showed up shortly after 7:30am and woke my kids with their loud gas-powered motors. When I complained, they responded to renege on their promise and suggested I look elsewhere for lawn service. (It was, incidentally, the fastest communication I ever received from them!) Apparently they do not want the business!
If you are in the market for landscaping and lawnwork, I would suggest that you look elsewhere. -
The boss and his crew made the cost of the job worth every last penny. They took down a huge, dead tree next to our pool and removed big, low hanging branches over our parking area. Hughes Landscaping were very knowledgeable, skilled, efficient and gracious. Their work was excellent and a very good value. We highly recommend them.

We used Hughes to install a water intrusion system for our back yard. Dave came out to survey our property the next day, providing an estimate on the spot, and the entire project took only 2 days to complete! Now we can play in our backyard without running through sloppy puddles every day!
Highly recommend and will continue to use them for my landscaping needs! -
Jimmy and his crew were efficient and clean. They took great care to make sure that our yard was disturbed as little as possible while doing work on two trees in the front and three in the back. They were even able to take care of a last minute problem tree that I asked them to remove the day of. Jim is an Absolute professional and very knowledgeable about each type of tree we have on our property. I will be using Hughes and this crew for all of my tree care needs from now on.

The actual work crew deserves credit for being timely, efficient, and hard working; however, Hughes Landscaping failed to meet our expectations in every other aspect of our interactions with them and, as such, cost the company a potential long-term customer. Jimmy, the arborist, lacked basic communication skills and failed to follow-up on several topics, prompting us to call the main business office for assistance. When he finally returned our messages, Jimmy was arrogant, condescending, and rude. Hughes eventually sent a second individual, Tim (?), to follow-up on outstanding requests for a) assistance selecting and purchasing replacement trees for several dead trees removed from the property and b) to initiate plans for hardscape and landscape installations over the fall/winter/spring time frame. Tim began the appointment by boasting "I am the owner's best friend. Mr. Hughes is my best friend, and that's why I am here" yet did not seem to understand why we were meeting and did not provide any assistance beyond promising to have a tree estimate ready within 24 hours and having a landscape designer call within the week. Two weeks have passed, and we still have not received a call from anyone at Hughes to discuss either project despite the fact we reiterated over and over and over again to both men that time was of the essence, as we wanted the trees planted before the ground froze. In comparison, we were able to contact, schedule and meet one of Hughes' competitors (Good Earth) within a three day period.
Frankly, customer service is the only thing separating the various landscaping companies serving Potomac, and Hughes failed to meet our expectations. I understand business is good for them right now, but the company owners should consider how long that will remain true if this is their standard of customer service. -
We can't say enough about how pleased we are with how our yard is maintained throughout the different seasons, thanks to Hughes Landscaping. With my significant other and I working full time jobs & being away from our home a majority of the week.. maintaining our property has been a huge stressor for the both of us. Hughes Landscaping is a shining example of excellence always going above and beyond everything we asked for. Every team member we have encountered was friendly, polite and accommodating. We have already had several people stop to ask what company regularly maintains our property. Rest assured that we will be telling everyone about Hughes Landscaping!

Wyatt & team did an amazing job clearing a HUGE tree that had fallen in our yard! They were prompt, professional, and thorough!

Our deck was in disrepair after years of wear. Hughes Landscaping took on our deck, trellis, and railing system and we now have an oasis in our backyard. Tim Gardner was an excellent communicator and facilitator for design aspects, product quality, and always went the extra mile to work with us daily. His crew was on time, worked diligently, and communicated with us about small details as well, led by Levy.
Tim is a 5-star Project Manager. We highly recommend Hughes Landscaping to our neighbors and friends.

Carter and John were amazing! They were the only company to give me an honest no bull-shit solution for my yard, and took the time and dedication to come back twice to find a reliable solution. I really appreciated the up-front work they were willing to do. Thanks guys!

2024 Update: We remain very happy with Hughes Landscaping. Tim Gardner is our project manager; he is such a pro and works so well with both us as homeowners and his crews (many of whom have been here at our house year after year).
We highly recommend Hughes Landscaping for all your yard needs--tree work, hardscaping, landscaping, regular lawn mowing. It's a pleasure to have them here! We are big fans of Hughes Landscaping! -
In a big storm, a very large branch came off a tree in our backyard and the Hughes arborist came by to look at the situation after regular work hours and then had a team at our house the next day to remove the tree debris. Hughes was prompt, professional and their rates were very fair.

Hughes landscaping and particularly Tim Gardner and his crew were great. We had five 30 ft trees in the front and several more not as tall in the front and back that reduced our yard to dirt over the years and were heavily involved in the wires along the street. Tim coordinated and oversaw the whole thing. He coordinated with Pepco and ground out stumps and roots and regraded and drained our yard both front and back. He had the whole thing planned. He dealt with all my worries. Everything is properly graded and green and ready for whatever we want to do next. I have already asked him to start coming up with a plan for our next project. Can't say enough good things. My main compliment to Hughes, and Tim, is that all I had to do is ask them to fix my yard and they did.

After evaluating several contractors, we chose to work with Hughes Landscaping on multiple small and large hardscape projects at our home in Darnestown and have been favorably impressed with the craftsmanship, price, professionalism, and overall management of each project. We've received numerous compliments on the finished products and are now enjoying them immensely. Highly recommended.

I contracted with Hughes to do work on my property to correct drainage problems. We discussed creating a swale to divert a large flow of water during heavy rainstorms away from my foundation out to a lower elevation in my yard. On the day of the job, the workers found tree roots that blocked them from digging out the swale. No one spoke to me about this. So instead of a swale, they dumped a lot of river rocks and made it look like a swale was there. I got suspicious and cleared away the rocks and found that at most they had cleared away the dead leaves. I contacted Carter Hughes about this and he said, Ya because of the roots we could only do what we could do.
I asked Carter to look at it with me, but I never saw him again.
So I contacted a tree company to have the tree taken down and remove the tree and take out the roots. Then I contacted Carter again and asked that once I had the tree out, he should send someone to complete the swale work. After a while going around and around with him on the phone, I realized he had no intention of completing the work, and it was useless asking.
I don't believe that just putting the rock down to look like a swale and then never mentioning to me about the problem with the roots was at all an open way to do business. -
Hughes landscaping completed a large-scale project for us, including building new fencing, decking, tall retaining walls, a permeable paver driveway, irrigation/water management, and landscaping. They were efficient and great to work with, and the quality of their work was excellent. The few times we asked for a change to be made they did so without complaint or issue. They even kept up our yard maintenance for the duration of the project. Highly recommend!

We’ve used Hughes Landscaping for years. Tim Gardner our account manager has been great to with. We’ve hired them to do our regular mowing, grass treatments, build a retaining wall, cut new flower beds, move a ton of landscaping rock, and dig and install a 30' downspout drainage system away from our house. It was a big job and they did fabulous!!! The team was on site for 3 days, arrived early, worked hard and finished the job quickly. We couldn't be more happy with the work Hughes did for us. We would recommend them to anyone and call them every year to clean up our beds in the spring. Their guys are great, and hardworking, what would take us 12 hours+, they knock out in a few hours. You can’t go wrong with these guys!

My friend, Cora, recommended Hughes Landscaping. I live in a townhouse end unit and it has gotten to the point where it is more difficult for me to maintain the yard. I had the pleasure of meeting Carter Hughes who walked me through what he would recommend. Initially it looked like it would be a few weeks for service, but Carter was able to squeeze it in this week. Fast Service! So appreciated that! ANd a job well-done! My yard looks gorgeous and it was exactly what was needed. I will continue to choose Hughes for any of my landscaping work in the future. Thank you, Cora, for referral and Thank you, Carter and your crew!

The Crew came out and removed trees from our yard that other companies were afraid of. They performed the work with minimal disruption to us and the crew was polite and cleaned up after themselves like they were never there. From the original meeting to all follow ups everything was professional and timely. Would highly recommend them for all your needs. They have earned a customer for life!!!

Jimmy and Hughes Landscaping recently removed three large spruce trees for me at my house in Gaithersburg. Their crew did an incredible job from start to finish, including clean up. They even ground an existing stump that I didnt know was there until they called me to ask if I wanted it taken care of while they were there. Great company to work with!
