Problems with inconsistent heating and heavy soot buildup around the fireplace made it clear that professional service was needed. The technician arrived on time, inspected the system carefully, and explained the condition of both the gas fireplace and woodstove before starting any work. A detailed wood stove cleaning was completed that noticeably improved airflow and overall performance. The service also included careful chimney maintenance recommendations to help prevent future buildup and improve long-term safety. In addition, a full chimney inspection was performed to check for blockages, wear, and ventilation concerns. Overall, the experience was professional, efficient, and left the entire fireplace system working much better than before.

The fireplace now ignites perfectly, produces a clean even flame, and heats the room much better than before. Daniel also took the time to clean the unit and provide helpful maintenance tips to keep it running efficiently in the future. I really appreciated his attention to detail and respectful attitude while working in my home. I highly recommend this service to anyone looking for reliable gas fireplace repair and exceptional customer service!

Deceptive and dishonest practices. Damaged and removed personal property from my home. Plumber disappeared mid job then over billed for time by 3x, charged for parts and services not rendered. They didn’t fix issues any of the 3 chances I gave them. Then they charged a card without authorization or disclosure of what was being charged. They also did not provide an estimate or bill before charging an old credit card they had on file. When trying to address these issues, Katelyn Barrell became aggressive and extremely unprofessional raising her voice and calling her staff names out of anger. This could have been easily addressed and resolved. Do not use this company.

Highly recommended great work experience.

The plumber stole prescriptions from the medicine cabinet above my sink!
-
Fixed a frozen/burst pipe that was in a tricky location in the wall. Professional and fast. Highly recommend!

I have had last minute 'emergency' plumbing issues at my house. The response time was excellent, and the workers were courteous and efficient.
-
Was charged $270 for the plumber showing up to tell me he needs to come another day
Sleazy - first time I’ve been billed before the work was done
Be warned! -
After a few bad experiences, I stopped using them. They take forever and are always trying to charge for unnecessary work. I'm ok with being ripped off a little bit - all workmen do that - but these guys take it to another level.
-
They were timely, efficient, and well mannered! Will definitely use again when needed! Did an excellent job fixing all our leaks!
-
A simple annual maintenance call on a fully functional system, half of which was installed by them the year before: $172 for parts (includes 60 for refrigerant) plus 2.5 hours (!) at $120/hour for a total of $472. Overpriced?
-
Everyone that I dealt with was polite and professional. Costs were explained in advance, and my leaking hot water heater was replaced within a few hours of my initial call. Very highly recommended!

I'm a die hard Barrell fan and a customer for over fifteen years. Why? For example, Mike just came by yesterday to tune up our HVAC system. He's clearly an expert, calmly deals with unexpected adversity, and great to work with.
Also, when things go awry with poor workmanship Barrell has always expeditiously made us whole. The HQ team is delightful and I always recommend Barrell to friends, family, neighbors and anyone who asks who to go to for plumbing and HVAC work. -
Not reliable. The plumber didn't show up at all on the scheduled date. I called the office to see if s/he was coming late. The person who answered the phone almost yelled at me that I didn't receive her calls to my home phone. It was unfortunate that I missed her calls, but I was never told that she would make a confirmation call before their crew shows up. I was expecting the plumber, not her call. Don't want to deal with these people again.

A shame this company has employees who don't live up to their promise: "Serving the Boston area for over 50 years, we have built a reputation for high-quality craftsmanship and professional, courteous service." Seriously some of the rudest workers I have had enter my house. Would not use them again when there are so many more competitors on the market. Take your business elsewhere.

Have not written any reviews before but am startled by the negative portrayal of longterm Plumbing and Heating Cambridge firm. I have used other plumbers for emergency and installation jobs and liked them. When it came time to replace our fifty year old furnace we started in researching in spring and chose Barrell. Other plumbers have uniformaly admired their choice of furnace and the workmanship. I would say the reception and scheduling is old school and if you kitchen floor has less than two inches of water ,even charming. No phone tree is a plus to me. That said I think their focus is on contract work. They more than lived up to the job and given our funky house it posed challenges. Crew was professional and they pointed out rebates and helped complete them. They were stellar for the job we needed them for.
Only reason I did not give them five is I don't like to gush and they are as New Englanders, not likely to want me to. Note:. They are closed on weekends, not a problem for me but it is a tip off for their focus. -
They show up on time, do a decent job, for the price they state.
While not inexpensive, they are fairly priced and stand by their work. We've had them do simple pipe repairs, hot water heater replacement, and fairly complex gas pipe relocation that involved fussy work due to a joist being in the wrong place.
All work done well with no return visits required.
