I talked to Daniel at Texas Air & Heat after another company's technician "diagnosed" a leak in the evaporator coil of one of the HVAC systems I have in my house. They followed it up with a quote for its replacement, with labor costs running to over $1800.
Given that the HVAC system (a 5-ton Trane XL 16) was less than 5 years old, I was suspicious. I requested Daniel to give me his opinion. He thoroughly inspected the system for leaks and concluded that there was no problem. As he put it, "I would love to change the evaporator coil, but in good conscience I can't advise that you do so." All it needed was a little refrigerant top-up. Daniel has a richly deserved reputation for integrity and honesty -- something that is sadly lacking among many others in the industry. -
