Home Services reviews in Fairfax, Virginia

I am fairly new to the Northern Virginia area and found myself needing some handy work done in my home office and I was a bit nervous about using a service for many reasons but I was so absolutely impressed with Matt from Jim the handyman. From my initial call to the immediate scheduling and now completion of work I can say confidently I highly recommend this business! Matt was very professional and he was very quick and in good communication with me and obviously knew what he was doing. It was such a great experience, especially as a woman - I felt very safe and comfortable. Now I know who to call next time I have any house stuff I need done! Highly recommend!

My entire experience with JTH was extremely positive! Everyone was so nice, helpful and knowledgeable. I promptly received an estimate and was able to easily schedule the repair. The technician was super friendly and took the time to thoroughly explain the repair process. Thanks for fantastic service!

I was very pleased with the quality workmanship of this business. Jorge was the handyman to repair my storm door closure issue and it works great now. He was familiar with the issue and knowledgeable in repairing it. I would highly recommend this company for its good service and reasonable pricing.

We appreciate the excellent work, integrity, and caring from everyone at Jim the Handyman who was involved with our flooring project - from Joe, who did the estimate, to Mauricio and Andres, who did the flooring work. We look forward to working with this trustworthy and caring company on future projects.

My new louvered closet doors were installed with perfection by Neal - Jim The Handyman. He was on time, neat, tidy, quiet and smart with lots of experience. I am having him install another set of doors because of his perfect impeccable work. I highly recommend Jim the Handyman and Neal. I need to add that I am the worlds most picky person. It is hard to meet my standards. Thanks, Neal - Jim The Handyman.

Would not recommend this company to anyone. One of there workers, Andre came in to do a dryer vent cleaning. He got upset after I wanted to call the company about an issue during the visit and started shouting and would not leave the home. Had to almost call the police. Notified the company and they did absolutely nothing. No call from manager or anything. They gave me $20 off and said oh well sorry. Use a company who cares about you.

We called Jim the Handyman on a Monday to work on our back stairs, as the railing was falling off and they requested we provide pictures for them to give us an estimate (no need for an in-person visit). The estimate was provided within hours and extremely transparent/reasonable for pricing, well below some of the other handymen we contacted. They then had someone out to do the work on the very next day, who were efficient and professional. They ended up coming in under the initial budget, while still performing additional work to reinforce the railing given the rot of some of the wood. In the area, the turnaround time, workmanship, and price can't be beat! Usually you have to choose one to compromise on, but it's not the case here.

I was preparing to paint our hallway, so needed to remove four air vent covers. When we removed the vents, pieces of the wall crumbled and fell off, and other parts were very jagged. I called Jim The Handyman for a price estimate. Within days, Carlos was able to come and do the repairs. He and his assistant were polite, friendly, and did awesome work. They arrived on time, and were very efficient. The final bill was reasonable and the work was great! We have used Jim The Handyman in the past, and will continue to do so! Thanks for the great job!

Jim the Handyman was easy to schedule with and staff and person answering phone is very nice. They quickly sent Hose to put in a new lock which I had bought already for my front glass/screen door. Hose did a great job in that extreme heat weather. Hose fixed it in a timely manner. He cleaned up everything after.
I used Jim the Handyman a second time and they quickly sent Tim an estimator as I needed new gutters and guards in the front and back. Manuel came out in a few days and fixed the front gutters and back gutters and put up gutter guards. Everything was hauled away and leaves cleaned off my balcony deck. During the last heavy rain, I had water pouring down my sliding glass doors on my balcony so definitely needed new gutters.
In the front, Hose found a birds nest hiding in my gutters so I put up guards. I relocated the birds nest to hiding in the bushes.
I am scheduling them do a third job which is power washing my deck and fence. -
The basic work they did was OK but the finish was terrible. I had them replace a door and the finish on the trim and the finish on the door are both terrible. I’m going to have to send it down myself and redo it. I called and told them and they were apologetic and they said they wouldsend somebody out to fix it. That was a month ago and I have heard nothing and seen no one. I am not happy with the workmanship, nor the service.

I contacted this company to remove some kitchen cabinets and dispose a double oven. Originally I was quoted $700 for above described work. On the actual workday, I asked for additional service of removal of granite tile backsplash. Igor and Milton did a wonderful job of taking care of all the work I requested but I was surprised on the $1500 bill I received at the end of the day which included 5 hr of drywall repair charge at the rate of $100/a hour. Igor left the job site early but left an invoice with Milton before he even finished with the work. By the end of the day, Milton told me that he wasn’t done with the work and need to come back for second coat of patching drywall. I proceeded to call their office to schedule for a second visit. On the second visit, Igor called and asked me what I needed done so I told him what Milton told me. I was unaware that Igor had already sent along a second invoice with Milton for the work before he finished the job. I didn’t realize there was additional cost until Milton finished the job hours later. There was a communication breakdown since Igor never told me there would be additional cost over the phone. I had to pay another additional $475 for 4 1/2 hr of drywall & painting plus $30 material fee. Igor ended up overcharged me by half a hour, at $95 a hour it seems excessive for putting on second coat of drywall, sanding and painting.

Totally pleased with their service. I had cracks in plaster ceiling repaired and a few floor tiles replaced. They were able to schedule me for the next day, they came on time, their work is impeccable, they cleaned everything up nicely, and charged half of what I was quoted elsewhere. Who could ask for more?

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Exceptional Craftsmanship & Service – Twice Over!
Finding a reliable, skilled, and professional contractor is no small feat—but Jim the Handyman has set the gold standard for home improvement. After having a significant amount of work done on the front of my home several months ago—including trim painting, beam replacement on the portico, railing updates, and foundation painting—I knew exactly who to call when it was time for more work.
From start to finish, Jonathan made the estimate process seamless, ensuring every detail was accounted for and providing clear communication along the way. Karissa and Cody in the office were equally wonderful—responsive, kind, and incredibly easy to work with. But the real stars of the show? Mauricio and his crew.
Mauricio led the team during the first project, and I was thrilled to see him back again this time. His kindness, patience, and ability to communicate made all the difference. When a small miscommunication occurred with the trim color around my front door, Mauricio was immediately apologetic and ready to fix it without hesitation. There was no stress, no hassle—just an easy, solutions-focused approach that speaks volumes about his professionalism.
Their attention to detail is unmatched—every brushstroke, every repair, every finish is completed with precision. And their reliability? Second to none. If there was ever a slight delay in arrival, Mauricio proactively communicated so I was never left wondering. That level of transparency and respect for a homeowner’s time is rare and deeply appreciated.
The transformation of my home has been incredible. The seamless finishes, the exceptional communication, and the trustworthiness of this team make Jim the Handyman the only company I’ll ever call for home projects. If you’re looking for a team that is skilled, reliable, and truly cares about their craft, look no further. I recommend them without hesitation -
If I could give 2.5 stars, I would. The repair team (Mauricio) was awesome. He knew exactly how to fix a tricky gutter problem on a 100-year-old house. They left the work area clean and the rates were very reasonable. Working with the office was awful - while the repair rate was reasonable, they sent me incorrect bills twice and didn't provide parts I has paid for to the repairmen.
At the beginning, the estimator underestimated the number of parts (gutter hangers) needed to complete the job. When I accepted the quote and they called me to charge my credit card for parts, I told them I wanted to order extra gutter hangers (5 instead of 2) to avoid any delays once the work started. They agreed and charged me $306.
When the parts came in, the office worked with me to schedule the repair. That went well. When Mauricio came out, he realized the parts ordered were the wrong size (too small). This was no big deal. The thing that bothered me is that the office only gave him 2 of the 5 parts I had paid extra for. It ended up not making a difference since they were the wrong size, but I paid hundreds of dollars for those parts and for a while no one knew where they were. When Mauricio went back to the office, he asked for even more (7) parts in the new, bigger size, and the office called me with a revised parts quote. $101.15. It was then that I realized how much I had been overcharged for parts the first time. When I pointed this out to the office, they did not apologize and acted like it was no big deal. They said the extra cost I'd already paid would be applied to my final balance.
When the new parts came in, they worked with me to schedule the repair. It was a little difficult - they texted and emailed and it seemed like I was talking to 2 different people because I had to respond to the same questions twice. But we worked it out. Mauricio came out and did a great job and left the work area very clean. 5 star work. Then I got my bill - my $203.85 credit was not applied to my total.
I called the office and let them know how unhappy I was with being overcharged twice. Again, no apology and it was no big deal. I hadn't heard back by the next morning, so I sent an email, relaying the various communication problems I've had with the office and asking to speak to an owner. Basically, I felt like the owners should be aware of the problems so they could train their office staff to not commit billing fraud. I got a "very sorry for the mix up with that" email and a revised invoice from the office staff. An owner has not called me.
Maybe an owner will read this. But they won't be hearing from me again to schedule any repairs. If you use Jim the Handyman, check your invoices VERY carefully, and ask for original, third party receipts for any materials they ask you to prepay for. -
Mauricio B did a fabulous job in painting our shutters. He and team were brave enough to scale 40 foot ladders to reach the very top shutters of our townhome. I've used JimHandyman services multiple times now and they are fantastic on all fronts...fair pricing, informative quotes, along with prompt and punctual, zero pressure customer service, and easy scheduling. We've relied on them for jobs both big and small, always with superb results and very kind, caring, and detail-oriented people sent to our home for various jobs. Endless thanks!

Had a unique lift install in my garage with a drop ceiling. Jim evaluated the job with provided photos and install instructions and returned a detailed quote that showed they actually understood the work. Jim’s crew came out right on time to install and did a great job on the install. They even took the time to go over operation of the lift with me and make sure everything was working properly. They were very professional, efficient and left the work area just like they found it. Highly recommend for any home improvement/repair/installs!

Horrible experience. Initial quote was written without a total of labor and materials as the top number was what I thought the overall quote was which seemed reasonable. Next starting the job I was called asking for another $1000 as said the needed different material as I was another $1000 in labor. I did not understand given I had a person come out whom saw my kitchen ceiling panels as nothing changed? The original $1250 which I thought this job was turned into over $3000. Horrible experience will never use them again. I should have got other estimates but thought original one was reasonable. The work was very good and the workers were great as I felt bad for them having to listen to my shock at the total.

@ Project (1/10/23 to 1/14/23) :
Due to water seepage from shower pan to underneath garage ceiling, Jim The Handyman was contracted to revamp my bathroom and repair garage ceiling. It was a job extremely well done far beyond my high expectations.
Tim’s estimate was clear and transparent with competitive and fair quote. He was responsive and knowledgeable. He invited the lead technician to meet me to confirm the full scope of the project. It was an important first step for successful planning and execution.
Lead technician Isaac with a team of 4 dedicated and skilled members did a fantastic job for 5 consecutive days without a single glitch. By removing old tiles, replacing rotten subfloor plywood, strengthening support beams, building new shower unit, installing bathroom floor tiles, repairing ceiling drywall and fixing ceiling light, the process was highly coordinated and exceptionally effective. Isaac’s leadership and craftsmanship were highly commended and appreciated.
Luke did a thorough inspection for quality assurance. His visit was crucial for the success of the project. I was impressed by his sincerity and enthusiasm for high quality standards.
Overall I strongly recommend Jim The Handyman without reservation. They surely had done an impeccable job.
@ New project (8/8/23-8/9/23) :
Jim The Handyman repaired my bump out sliding door and windows. The team led by Igor was superlative. Milton, Altan and Jesus are professional and dedicated in repairing and painting the bump out above and below the deck. Their work was commendable and highly appreciated. Milton is one of the best in his profession with skills and full commitment to excellence. I strongly recommend their services for similar tasks in the future.
It’s blessed to have two impeccable repair works done by two different teams from Jim The Handyman in less than 7 months.
@ Latest project (9/21/23):
The team of August 8-9 was invited back to repair and paint my rear windows before cold weather. Igor, Milton, Altan and Jesus again did a fantastic job. The team truly deserves my heartfelt recommendation for an A+ service. -
I recently hired Jim The Handyman to install a double oven in my kitchen and I’m happy with the result. Although it took a little while to get on their schedule, we finally got a time booked for the installation.
Jorge, the technician was professional, courteous, effective at communication, and took care to protect my floors and walls during installation by using a wood panel to rest the oven on. Although we had an issue with the electrical junction box being too low, the team at JTH helped connect us with a same-day electrician who took over the project when Jorge had to leave for another job. After the new Romex wire and junction box was installed Jorge came back to finish the installation and worked with the electrician to test out the oven.
We were hit with a double whammy as our kitchen sink was blocked and they offered us contact info for a Master Plumber who helped us with unclogging our drain. So although the project cost a lot more to complete, getting all that work done in one day essentially saved our Thanksgiving holiday so we could cook for our guests.
I would recommend Jim The Handyman to anyone in need of simple appliance installation, as they’re licensed, insured, and clearly care about doing quality work. I’ll be calling them again for future projects. -
We've used this company a couple times now, and they've always had pletny of communication, great people doing the work and the overall cost was reasonable. This last time, we had a shower door installed (as well as a bunch of small things). Diego and Juan were super detail oriented and stayed later to make sure I was happy with how it was done (and I didn't even have to push/insist). They were great and very professional. Will definitely use them again.

Efrain and team did a great job at our house this morning! The entire process, from getting an estimate, to scheduling and completing the work, was smooth and there was great communication at every step. I will definitely be using Jim The Handyman again in the future.
