I cannot give Metcalf enough praise. They handled our kitchen remodel wiring nearly 10 years ago—fast, professional, and fair. But the reason I’ll never go anywhere else is the way they’ve treated us since.
Most companies look for any reason to charge a fee, but Metcalf has come out twice now and charged us nothing. The first time, they quickly diagnosed a complex issue with our main overhead line (turns out rats had chewed through the neutral) and guided us through the process with SMUD.
Just recently, I lost overhead lights in three rooms after a smart switch I installed failed. Even though it wasn't their work, they came out promptly, fixed the lights, and wouldn't take a dime because they couldn't "finish" the switch install until I had the new part in hand.
That kind of customer service is almost nonexistent these days. They do the right thing simply because it’s the neighborly thing to do. If you want an electrician with actual integrity, look no further.

Cannot recommend them enough! They are clean workers who do everything possible to finish the job correctly. They were very responsive to emails and phone calls.

Dave was quick and efficient. In my case, be diagnosed our problem over the phone but did add that it could be another problem. He was friendly and you will not be disappointed.

I cannot compliment this firm high enough. They come into your house, they do EXCELLENT work at an affordable price. We had them install ceiling fans, outlets, dimmers, lights, etc. They did a beautiful job and I would highly recommend them for any electrical job.

    MY RESPONSE:

I agree that mistakes do happen even to good companies. What makes the difference is how companies respond to those mistakes. I agree that your initial response to this mistake was professional and reasonable. I even told you that I hadn’t posted a negative review of your company yet because you had such a good reputation online and I wanted to give you a chance to make it right. I’m not sure what made you decide to go down this road but the consequence is a public debate with an unhappy customer which is beneficial to neither of us.

At this point Norman has accused me of libel, extortion and “gas lighting” for simply telling the truth. Initially he apologized profusely because his foreman “misunderstood the scope of the job,” but then in his post he says a few electrical boxes were simply missed (again I think the truth is important; he claimed our house is 3,500 square feet. That is a gross exaggeration). The boxes that were “missed” were outlets that were easily visible to the naked eye in main living areas. His argument is that all connections in hard to reach areas were repaired correctly but simple electrical outlets immediately visible when you walk into a room were “missed?” I guess that is possible but it seems very unlikely to me. The electrician who eventually re-wired the house did not find aluminum connections repaired in the manner with which Norman described they would be repaired when we discussed the job.

Norman, you claim that you responded with your lawyer after I threatened to sue you and reported you to the CSLB. This is simply not true. After our text conversation on October 25th your lawyer contacted me on Wednesday October 31st with an aggressive letter aimed to, in my opinion, scare me out of pursuing the issue further. I gave you fair warning that I was planning on reporting you to the CSLB if we could not resolve our differences. On Monday December 17th your lawyer was sent a draft of the CSLB complaint for review. I did not submit the CSLB claim until April because I was hoping we could work things out. The CSLB case was dismissed because technically the contract for repairs was between you and the sellers of the home despite the fact that I owned the home when the work was supposed to be completed, not because they found that you didn’t do anything wrong.

Thank you for letting me know that you gave a refund to the sellers of the home; this is new information to me. When the work took place I owned the home and a stipulation of buying the home in the first place was that all aluminum connections would be repaired, so it is very confusing to me that the sellers got a refund and I got a house with unrepaired aluminum wiring. It appears the sellers accepted a refund knowing the repairs were not completed. That is very useful information for me, thank you.

You are correct that I said I did not want you in my house again. Would you want someone in your home who acccepted payment for a job that was not completed? I was willing to consider future outdoor electrical work as part of reimbursement instead of demanding a cash payment; I fail to see how this implicates me as being manipulative.

At the end of the day I think it comes down to this: Norman Metcalf was paid to do a job that was not completed. Instead of doing the professional thing and making it right he chose to use a lawyer in an attempt to intimidate the person who was affected by the incomplete work. I truly regret that I have had to spend time and energy defending myself against libel, extortion and “gas-lighting” on a public forum. I have far better things to do with my time but I also won’t stand for these accusations from a company that treats clients this way.

Amazing work, fast, friendly and quality. My father was an electrical contractor from 1951 to 2012. Owned Santa Monica Electric, that whole time. I did not go into the trades. I am a white collar professional. Dave and Norman did the entire wiring at my new home construction of my now gorgeous home in east Sac. My father was extremely impressed when he inspected it. And that says a lot. I refer them to everyone I know and everyone loves them. It's that simple.

Metcalf did excellent electrical upgrade work. On-time and great communication. Good quality electrical work can be expensive, so get a cost estimate in advance. I highly recommend Metcalf for updating lighting and adding an EV charger.

Metcalf Electric is fantastic. I have had this company do a fair amount of electrical work over the years and always got great service at fair prices. Moreover, they are highly ethical and trusted. I say this as this week my mother had a major electrical outage and as I described the problem, Norm the owner, told me this sounded like a Smud responsibility. I called Smud and sure enough it was Smuds responsibility to repair. You don't find anyone more honest and willing to do right by his customers. If I could, Metcalf Electrical gets a MILLION stars in my book.

We would hire Metcalf Electric again in a heartbeat. They made us feel confident in the work they were doing and really took the time to explain things. We definitely felt like they were looking out for our best interest
and didn’t try to upsell us on anything that wasn’t necessary. They were wonderful to work with. They went above and beyond to ensure our electrical needs were met.

Nick arrived on-time and was very personable and professional. He completed a full home electrical inspection finding and repairing three dangerous issues. We were greatly relieved. This company operates with honesty and integrity. They explained our 1916 electrical system thoroughly and didn’t recommend unnecessary upgrades according to our current needs. Total outlay $200, other companies tried to scare us into $10K+ upgrades. I cannot give Metcalf Electric a better review. Recommended highly.

We operate a commercial facility that is always in need of electrical adjustments, upgrades and so on. The Metcalf team has been our go-to electrical company and they are WONDERFUL. Their team is always punctual, polite and professional. They have complete a ton of work in our facility including general electrical repairs, circuit additions, ceiling drops, panel swaps, complex issue resolutions, equipment connections and preparations for city inspection. Norman and crew remember every change and addition so none of the work is double-completed. The work-to-invoice ratio is good with very fair pricing. I have no hesitations in recommending the Metcalf team to my friends and colleagues.

Metcalf team has come out twice for small jobs and once to give an estimate on a large project. I had to wait on the large project, but the price seemed fair. The two smaller jobs were fairly priced and well done. I would highly recommend.

After having Metcalf Electric visit my home a number of times for many different things (switches, outlets, lighting, ceiling fans, impossible doorbells, etc.) I have to say that they provide very quality work. Sam and John are unbelievably creative and talented. They really did an outstanding job on this place. They never gave up on some of the more difficult items I threw at them. Really great guys too. Metcalf Electric will be my "go-to" electricians from here on out.

After hiring electricians over the course of decades of home ownership, I finally found an electrician who gets it right the first time. I had a couple of outdoor outlets powering sump pumps that were critical to keeping my house from flooding during the rainy season. They intermittently stopped working when I needed them most. Norman replaced the outlets and the risk was quickly mitigated. The bonus is that Metcalf's rates are reasonable for the professional and friendly service that I've received on many occasions. I highly recommend Metcalf Electric with 100% confidence.

Reasonable prices, Kurt and team had experience working with SMUD and the city and were able to push things along. Communication was clear and frequent so that I didn’t have any surprises. The team at Metcalf were personable and pleasant. Their work seems good and got the job done.

I hired Metcalf Electric to install a 240V outlet in my garage to charge an electric vehicle. I chose Metcalf since they came back with a very honest and fair estimate to install the outlet compared to two other competitors I had received quotes from. I appreciate an honest company that is not looking to over-bill unknowing consumers for unnecessary services.

Not only did Metcalf provide a fair estimate, but they also conducted the work in a professional and timely manner. Kurt also went above and beyond by helping diagnose an issue with my electric box too which they didn’t charge for. I will definitely be using this company in the future if I need any electric work done.

I write this unfortunate review to try and warn others in their search for honest and skilled electrical companies. My concerns are based on:

    1. Actual poor electrical work
    2. Incompetent team and lack of proper oversight
    3. Inappropriate interactions with Kurt, team leader

    1. Poor electrical work (pictures). My colleague gave rave reviews for Norman (owner), however Kurt was in charge of the work at my house, and perhaps that is where the fault lies. There were a range of mistakes from the larger missed recessed light placement, the unsecured electrical outlet, the destruction of the wall from conduit placement, the open terminal and broken pool light (all in photos). Then there are the smaller mistakes like setting mismatching light colors, however this is a reflection of their attention to detail (photo).

    2. Poor interactions with team. The pictures demonstrating the poor work is just half the story. I understand Kurt was the licensed electrician and his workers are not, however they should be properly supervised. On the first day of work, one of the young workers asked me if my air conditioning had been working and alerted me there was an error message on my smart thermostat. I went up to the thermostat, saw the error, and fixed the loose wire, which likely came loose when they were attempting to run wire down the wall (which they failed at). I was a little unsettled by the fact that I, a person not working for an electrical company, had to teach the electrical worker how to fix the thermostat (which they install btw). This lack of problem solving capabilities also likely explains the unnecessary hole they made in the ceiling when attempting to place the recessed light that same day. And that is only one story of many.

    3. Inappropriate interactions with Kurt. I understand that we all make mistakes, but it is the way he responded to these mistakes that was troubling. After approaching Kurt regarding my concerns about the unnecessary holes in the wall, the fact that our pool light was not working (despite it working prior to his work), the fact that he did work that was not originally agreed on (he placed recessed lights in an area we did not agree on, he changed out a pool light switch when the only issue was that the breaker on the panel just had to be replaced since it wasn't tripping), he became angry and defensive. This was a red flag for me. He became angrier as I informed him I would like to have another electrician take a look at the work. Another red flag. I emailed the company with my concerns without reply.

At the end of the day, I paid the >$10,000 worth of work that was poorly completed, and found a different company, Charles Young Electric, to repair the mistakes and finish the work, who I highly recommend. Would recommend staying away from Metcalf Electric at all costs.
