Silver Spring Landscaping recently created a new patio for us to replace an old flagstone patio that was improperly sloping towards the house. The new patio, made of concrete pavers, is beautiful. The work was completed quickly and on time. I asked Don for suggestions to improve the overall look of my backyard, and he recommended and installed a beautiful new garden that perfectly complements the new patio. Silver Spring Landscaping exceeded our expectations! They were fast, reliable, professional and most importantly our yard looks amazing. Their team built us new retaining walls, revitalized our old flower beds, created new gardens, added an amazing fire pit area, and added lighting to a once very dark backyard. They were also able to keep with the aesthetics of our house which was also important to us. Don and his team fulfilled everything we had imagined plus some. We will definitely use this company for any future landscaping projects.

Don has been great from the initial estimate to the final cleanup. He came himself to do the estimate and throughout the project to make sure it was going well. His crew is extremely professional and our new retaining wall looks amazing!

We have engaged Don Thurber of Silver Spring Landscaping to perform two large yard renovations in January 2014 and June 2021. The projects involved designing and creating stone walls, walkways, a patio, a stoop renovation, and excavation to create multi-levels of yard and gardens on our sloped property. Old plants were removed and new shrubbery and perennials were installed. We also had a river stone swale built to redirect rainwater away from the yard.

The planning of the design for the renovations was an easy collaboration between Don and us. The projects started and finished on schedule. His workers started each workday on time, worked steadily throughout the day, and took pride in their work. Don oversaw the projects from start to finish and provided us easy access to him for any questions or concerns we had during the installation. He is quite familiar with various plants and made recommendations for us to use the space to the best advantage. Don made several walk-through examinations after the work was completed.

I had a great experience with Don and Silver Spring Landscaping. Don was extremely quick and responsive to my initial requests. We are thrilled with the transformation of our backyard, which posed many unique challenges. A steep hill, eroding and stump-riddled, previously rendered over half our property nearly inaccessible. That hill has turned into a beautiful terraced landscape via stone-faced retaining walls, with stairs and drainage that are themselves gorgeous. When lit up at night it looks like something out of a fairytale! The lawn has also been upgraded and expanded beyond what we imagined possible with better grading and smart thinking about walkway redesign. Don was very easy to communicate with and integrated our preferences seamlessly into design decisions. Work was always on or ahead of schedule. We highly recommend Silver Spring Landscaping!

Silver Spring Landscaping rebuilt 3 foot and 8 foot retaining walls surrounding my driveway and added a drainage system in only a couple of weeks. Don and his team were extraordinary. This was the least stressful construction project I've ever had! The retaining walls are gorgeous too!

Drainage and Grading
Don, the owner, and his team did a great job. He designed and built a nice decorative patio for us. Also we had a serious drainage problem which was perfectly corrected. The entire project was completed in less than two weeks. The team worked hard .
Don and his manager were very responsive to our requests and questions. Our new landscaping and the patio look amazing. Soon we will ask Don to do our front yard. Don stands behind the work. Loved the work done by Don and his crew in our backyard featuring 3 levels of retaining walls. Don came on site everyday and was continuously communicating with the progresses and modifications to be made as needed. The crew was really professional, cleaning everything and they were carefull with the surroundings. We are so happy with our backyard now! We will certainly call Don again for our front yard when we are ready!

Don and his team were great to work with. I felt comfortable from the get go with his ideas and vision for what was a very large project that involved asphalt and concrete removal, fencing, paving and the installation of pavers and new grass and plant areas. I highly recommend Silver Spring Landscaping and will be using their services again. Don (the owner) and his team were a pleasure to work with and delivered excellent results at a great price. Our project consisted of a complete overhaul of the landscaping in our front yard and installation of a drainage system. We have received tons of positive feedback from our neighbors and couldn't be more pleased with how great our house looks now. Don provided a couple alternative plans, worked with us to tailor one of the plans to meet our specific needs, and did an excellent job on the installation. He followed up after the installation and even visited our property several more times to make sure that everything was settling in nicely. The weather presented some issues with the new sod that we had installed, but Don worked with our irrigation company to make sure that the sod was watered exactly how it needed to be watered to survive the adverse weather. The drainage system that they installed has also been a huge benefit to our property. We used to have a ton of flooding in there area where he installed the drainage system, but not anymore.

Bottom line: Don's knowledge and expertise in his field is obvious, and he will deliver great results.

After researching local landscaping companies to improve my yard, I am thrilled that I found Don Thurber and Silver Spring Landscaping! Don took my basic, and admittedly uninspired, idea for a backyard patio and front yard refresher and created an amazing backyard living space with 2 patios and a front walkway with enviable curb appeal – all for a fair price. Don was thoughtful in tree and plant choice to make for a beautiful landscape and help keep the deer away, a huge problem in MoCo and especially so with a park behind my house. After I raised concerns regarding drainage at our first meeting, Don quickly and easily identified a solution for this long-time issue.

Don is a consummate professional, an expert in landscape design, is very easy to work with, is responsive to e-mails and text messages, solved problems quickly, and accommodated additional requests as work got underway. In addition, Don’s team was courteous and cleaned up the yard at the end of each workday, something that I and the HOA very much appreciated. Silver Spring Landscaping completed a two part project for us this summer and we are really happy with the quality of work. We had a crumbling timber retaining wall that they replaced with a terraced engineered stone wall (pictures shown), then they completed a Nicolock stone patio, buried and extended drainage pipes from our gutters, and replaced an old wood fence with a more welcoming architectural aluminum fence (see pic). The guys really went over and above to make the work visually appealing, and it was obvious his stone workers were real craftsmen! I would not hesitate to use Silver Spring Landscaping again on future projects.

Our backyard was a mess. It sloped off abruptly, and badly needed a retaining wall to stop it from crumbling through erosion. The previous owner had placed great numbers of concrete cylinders along the slope, then covered the cylinders with dirt in an effort to level the yard. As you can imagine, over time the cylinders shifted and dirt rolled down the slope, carrying our plantings with it. We couldn’t even replace our back fence because there was no terra firma on which to build, just shifting dirt.

Don talked with us and was able to imagine a solution far better than anything my husband and I could have imagined. Don and his team (including the foreman, William) excavated all the concrete cylinders (no small job). They build a substantial hardscape retaining wall, and properly leveled my yard. They took special care with water control, installing different type drainage systems. They installed a new fence, planted new sod, and designed and planted beautiful new perennial plantings. And all of this within one week!

Truly, the attentiveness and care William and his crew displayed throughout the project was noteworthy. I asked a lot of questions, but they never made me feel that my questions were unimportant, or that I was a pest. At one point I noted the new fence did not completely seal off our backyard from our neighbors. They revised the design immediately so that the fence completely sealed off the yard. Don was just as attentive to our needs, going out of his way to make sure we were happy with plant selection and placement.

I’ve worked with contractors in the past who “do the work” without truly caring about the work. This is not Silver Spring Landscaping. All of them, Don, William, and the crew, made it clear that the quality of the work mattered to them as much as it did to me. The professionalism, skill set, and knowledge of their craft is exceptional.

Both my husband and I are awed by the finished product, especially when we remembered what it looked like just a few days prior. We are so glad we engaged Silver Spring Landscaping. Don is the rare combination of artistry and skill.

We contracted with Silver Spring Landscaping to repair retaining walls and upgrade our plantings. They developed a design that is staged to bloom from spring through fall. Their team was prepared to do the work as soon as our contract was signed. The team was here working every day with the exception of rainy days and Sundays. They worked carefully, efficiently and carefully, making sure that our new plantings were adequately watered and that our site was clean at the end of each workday. We love our renewed yard and garden. Also, several neighbors have complemented our design and noted the team’s impressive work ethic.
