J&E Modern Construction renovated both our unfinished basement and outdoor breezeway of our almost 100-year-old rowhouse in NE DC. They did a FANTASTIC job! The job included demolition of existing non-weight-bearing walls, new framing, insulation, sheetrock, ceiling; new flooring, doors, windows, overhead lights/wiring; upgrading the stairway to 1st floor; building “mechanical room” for boiler; plus framing, screening, ceiling, tiling back breezeway; installing breezeway fans; plastering & painting; and other finish work. We did NOT need the full bathroom done; it was already done. We also purchased & J&E installed stackable washer/ventless dryer.

The finished basement includes a guest bedroom with private back entrance and private access to bathroom, a small room to be used as a recording studio, hallway/general access to washer/dryer, and small sitting area at base of the steps. Breezeway now provides a screened in patio.

Importantly, J&E discovered some structural decay in the brick support pillars and beams/crossbeams at the back of the house in the breezeway and were able to repair the issue quickly and attractively for a reasonable additional fee.

While J&E was not the least expensive bid we received, the quality, timeliness, and thoroughness of their work was first rate! Additionally, the communication channels (via WhatsApp) connected all the team leadership easily and efficiently. The response time was speedy.

Yair Delayahu spent considerable time assessing the job; his estimates were incredibly detailed & parsed out financially. Shay Ovadia, and Orlando were terrific in guiding the project, and crew member Oliver and his teammates, plus electrical/plumbing teams, were all tremendously skilled, punctual, courteous, and responsive.

Clients are responsible for the selection and purchase of items like doors & handles, flooring, fans, washer/dryer. Client selects paint color. J&E can advise re materials. There’s a final walk-through/punch list for any dangling loose ends,

    HIGHLY RECOMMENDED—5 STARS!

Shay and his team were absolutely amazing. They added a bathroom and closet to the second floor our 1930s craftsman. This project required changing the roof line and significant structural reinforcement on the first floor. The end result is a palatial master suite that my wife and I love.

Not only is the work quality outstanding, but Shay is easy to work with and incredibly responsive. He was easy to get a hold of at anytime and resolved any concerns we brought to him quickly. He really cares about his customers.

We won't look for other contractors every again. J&E is the best in town.

DO NOT do business with this company. They present themselves as professional however they do not honor their contract or their work. Initially, I thought they’d done a good job. Four months later floors began to fade. Michael Maravilla was the Sales Rep. he’s come back out and even sent a tech out. I have been waiting for two months for them to rectify the issue. Micheal will not answer my calls or return my text message. I spoke with Andrea Cartagena three weeks ago. She promised me that Michael’s Manager would return my call by the end of the day. That never happened. I’ve called Andrea several times since, no answer. I called the office and asked the operator to be connected to Michael’s Manager, conveniently the line got disconnected. The conclusion of this matter, they took advantage of me by stealing my money because they did not honor contract or rectify the issue. I have these people ample time to respond and provide a solution. I generally don’t write reviews how we what they’ve done is outlandish and unacceptable.

Emerson did an incredible job installing hardwood floors in my condo. I couldn't be happier with the service! He was kind, knowledgeable, efficient, responsive, professional, and affordable. I had badly damaged, cheap bamboo floors and needed to replace them to get ready to sell my place. Emerson started work this Monday and completed it today, Wednesday, by noon. It was incredible! They ripped out 854 square feet of old flooring and installed beautiful new floors in 2.5 days. He even did underneath the appliances.

Best of all, unlike most contractors, Brazilian Floors is based right in DC, so Emerson was able to stop by on short notice to bring by samples to choose from and discuss the quote. I highly recommend this company and will definitely do business with them again.

I used Resilient Contractors to renovate my kitchen and they were excellent. They helped me to install new cabinets, appliances, and reposition my kitchen island for more walkability. The owner is very responsive and knowledgeable. I would highly recommend.

Mikkel and his crew were professional, on time every day and over delivered on quality! They were one of the more reasonable bids that we received for our rental property as well. I definitely recommend Resilient!

This company's "F" rating by BBB says it all.

My experience with St. Michael’s Kitchen & Bath involved virtually every problem a homeowner fears: severely late deliveries (or crews not showing up at all), partial deliveries accompanied by pressure for full payment, major measurement errors, cabinets repeatedly built off-spec and remade, and ultimately having to seek arbitration through the Better Business Bureau, which remains unresolved.

One thing prospective customers should know is that the company requires a large non-refundable deposit, which means that once problems start you have very little leverage to protect yourself.

Despite renovating nearly everything in my apartment — floors, bathrooms, even the floor plan — dealing with this cabinet project proved far more difficult, stressful, and time-consuming than the rest of the renovation combined.

I would advise serious caution before hiring this company.

Worth a visit to hold and see tile options. Knowledgeable staff. Pleasant adjacent cafe. Main store on Annapolis.

I was very pleased with the service of St. Michael's Kitchen and Bath. Nadir Rehman was very attentive to the details of design and installation of an extensive set of bookshelves. The subcontractors, who did the work of installation, were careful and efficient; they left no dust behind themselves. I don't think I could have found better service. The price was reasonable.

This was our third total kitchen renovation and, by far, our best experience.

We had a very pleasant and professional experience with SMKB when we decided to replace our kitchen. Our designer was extremely knowledgeable and presented many ideas to improve the design we had originally envisioned and did it in a way that was cooperative and professional. We always felt they had our best interests in mind and helped us to make smart decisions on design, materials, hardware, etc. that would give us an impressive result and within our budget. Considerate, professional, very competent. We love our SMKB kitchen and we highly recommend working with them.

We entered a powder room renovation contract with SMKB after we already designed, selected & purchased most of what we needed. Missing was
the floor tile selection & paint colour, though we already had an idea of what we wanted. We walked to SMKB on a Sunday after bfast to select the floor tile. It took less than 1/2 hour including our walk. Driving to the paint store with a sample of the floor tile helped us select the paint colour within 10 minutes. SMKB finished our powder room project within two weeks. We are delighted with SMKB's renovation!

Zen Renovations did a major renovation of our house, including the kitchen and several bathrooms. The result was amazing, the craftsmanship was top notch and the crew from the design staff to the construction workers were great to work with. We are thrilled with the results!

We used Zen for a complete reno of our kitchen in a 1910 townhouse in Eastern Market neighborhood of Capitol Hill. Their staff was fantastic during the design phase, and the work got done very quickly. Fantastic attention to detail, and their ability to make adjustments in the face of supply chain problems outside their control (appliances), and the nuances of a 100+ year old house, was incredibly helpful. We even threw a curve ball at them mid-project, adding some work on an adjacent powder room... they rolled with the additional work, and the entire project was fantastic. The two most important things that made this project successful was the quality of the work and their service, start to finish. Highly recommend Zen for your remodeling needs!
