There should be a 0 star option!!
A boiler maintenance appointment was made for today between 8-12PM of which I took the day off to be here because they would not originally scheduled it on a Saturday. 12PM passed and I called to be informed the technician wouldn't arrive till after 1PM which wouldn't work for me being that I had to make use of the day off and decided thereafter to schedule another appointment giving them 1.5 hours to work should the technician have arrived the latest 12PM.
This is unacceptable especially that I have a service contract and now lost a vacation day!!! Now I have to wait to the 23rd for the service. All this aggravation could've been avoided if they would've set it for a Saturday from the beginning or kept the scheduled appointment today.
Completely unsatisfied customer!!! -
I am positively blown away by the level of service provided! Technician Kevin worked many hours yesterday repairing my furnace and then finishing by bleeding all radiators along with the back-up of Doug whom arrived to do that task. Both men were careful to maintain social distancing, wore masks and were very low key and unobtrusive while working. The basement was left clean and neat.Thank-you Petro for your quick response and keeping me informed/updated about arrival times. I felt safe and confident while they were here and am now enjoying the toasty comfort of my home.

UPDATE: after escalating my issue with Petro and them seeing my reviews here, they offered a solution that was more competitive but not as low as other rates. The person who handled my case was very helpful and wanted to resolve the issue. I have decided to continue with them for the year because of the difficulties I would have bundling propane with oil and having to replace Petro’s propane tank if we stopped service. I am hoping I will not be revisiting these problems in the future.
Original review:
I have been a Petro customer since 2017. I switched to Petro because we needed propane delivery and they are one of the few companies on Long Island that will deliver both oil and propane to your home.
From the beginning, I have requested Petro combine my propane costs with my oil and service contract costs to create a monthly budget that would be paid evenly across the year and any overage would be paid at the end of the year. For the most part, they were good about combining these as I requested it every time I started a new budget.
For my year of 2022, Petro set a budget that was supposed to include my propane, oil, and service contract of $458. This was a two year agreement with a capped oil per gallon price of $5.789 (i have since been quoted $3.649 by other companies).
At the end of the year, I received an overage charge of $1,459. This seemed excessive so I called Petro. Usually in the past, Petro would call us to discuss the end of the budget, overages, and what the new budget would be. They did not call this time. I had to call them.
We accepted that the overage cost was based on usage and that we owed the money so we did not argue the bill. I asked what my next budget was going to be given that there was such an overage. They said my budget would continue to be $458.
Two weeks later, I get my first invoice on the new budget and they have raised my monthly budget to $691. Surprised, I called them to ask what happened. They weren't sure why I was told that but this was my new budget. I asked to speak to someone in budgeting.
Through budgeting we determined that they had grossly miscalculated my initial budget under which I signed a two year agreement. Not only had they underpriced the oil, but they did not include the propane in the calculation, despite the fact that is had been a part of my budget for five years and I requested that it be calculated in the budget.
They also raise the cost of the annual service plan without my knowledge. This seems a bit absurd given that they had me in a two year agreement and I could not fight the service plan pricing unless I changed to a lower tier or paid a contract cancel penalty to leave.
So at this point, I find myself bound to a two year contract based on a miscalculated budget from a company that randomly raises its service contract rates to customers who are trapped within a contract. Nothing I agreed to at the time of signing this contract was represented properly and I agreed to a price that they miscalculated.
When I asked to be let go from the contract without penalty, they said they can not waive that and I will have to pay the remaining $400 cancellation fee despite all of these mistakes being theirs.
Did I mention their oil is over $2 higher per month than other companies?
I would NEVER recommend Petro to anyone. They are not operating in good faith and they persistently make mistakes in their budgeting. If they do not waive the cancellation fee, I will be taking this claim up with the Better Business Bureau. Take your business elsewhere. -
Your oil price was too high to lock in a price for the year, therefore we had to go elsewhere and locked in a cheaper price for the year. We were a long time customer, with three accounts, with Petro, and you still did not offer a comparable price to stay with you. Very disappointed that Petro did not offer a comparable price. With three accounts we have, Petro still would have made money. Hopefully Petro can offer us a better price on the oil when our current contract runs out and we can sign up again with Petro

Sad to say that Petro didn't come through after calling them a few times. They said that they would have a supervisor call me regarding a follow up visit that needed to get an item replaced. However, no call and no follow up. So annoyed because have been with them for some time. Their service is has been slipping over the past years. Sloppy and shoddy service is getting so tiresome especially when you are paying the bills...It seems that in this day and age, good service is getting to be a rare exception.

I've been a loyal customer of Petro for two years, relying on their services for three of my properties. However, I was shocked by their recent pricing for heating oil, which stood at $4.41/gallon as of December 29th 2023 while competitors in the area charged $3.09-$3.29/gallon. This extreme difference of over $1.32/gallon from the market price, especially under my variable plan with them, raises serious concerns about their pricing integrity. I would advise others to steer clear of this company due to such unjustified overcharging

Vincent came the other night as we had no hot water. He quickly diagnosed the issue and made sure everything was ok for at least 30 minutes after the burner kicked back on. Petro sent him within 2 hours of our issue.

I had an issue with heat and hot water on one of our coldest days this January. I called Petro and they were there quickly. Their technician was friendly and efficient. He let me know what the problem was before he fixed it. I would highly recommend Petro Home Services. Just moving to the area a few months ago I picked a great company. So happy I signed a contract with them.

Was very surprised and pleased to have the service call scheduled for the same day that the service call was requested. The service person actually arrived a few minutes before the 5-8PM time frame scheduled for this address. The service person was very attentive as I described the problem and what I had already perceived to be the cause of the problem (possible defective valve in the domestic hot water system) which prompted my request for professional guidance. Once he had checked out the system the service person also concluded that the valve was defective and had to be replaced. Since the defective valve was part of the domestic water system and not the boiler hot water system under Petro it was recommended that an independent plumber be contacted for the valve replacement.

Response to a request for home heating service was very good, with same-day service call scheduled. When he arrived, the service technician was prompt, courteous, knowledgeable, and installed a replacement thermostat quickly. However, there was no choice of thermostats, and the one installed is very hard to read for its programming instructions and has no backlight for ease of reading.

My husband called to see about getting our burner serviced as it was setting off the smoke alarm and within an hour Sasha (tech # 646) was at our house. He did an amazing job, took apart whatever he needed to and cleaned the whole thing out. It is near our dryer so it had a build up of lint in it which was burning every time the heat kicked on. He was very clean, professional and efficient. He was also very knowledgeable and thorough and really seemed to have our best interest at heart and we will forever be grateful for his work!

Excellent customer service who scheduled my emergency quickly and with genuine concern. Technician arrived on time and was friendly and professional. He identified the problem quickly and rectified it. Over the years I have experienced many companies but Petro is definitely the best and I highly recommend them to everyone.

In my opinion. Petro is the worst company to deal with. Long time customer. Overpriced mini split AC unit. Installed with defective line sets confirmed by over 4 Petro technicians. Do not follow manufacturers guidelines for warranty parts.Over $1000. Dollars in troubleshooting and still can't put in writing what the exact problem is. Can only say " looks like" but willing to charge me labor and which would void 6 years remaining on unit which was confirmed by manufacturer.
Oil prices also high. Techs don't vacuum air intakes on boiler when scheduled for a cleaning. The list goes on.Field Mangager outwardly rude.
STAY AWAY FROM PETRO!!! Otherwise you'll be contacting BBB and the Attorney General Consumer affairs. -
I have been using Petro for several years. They are usually pretty good at servicing our needs but for the past several years they have allowed us to run out of oil in the beginning of the winter. This past November they scheduled a delivery and didn't show up. A week later when I realized it, I called them. They assured me they were coming that day. I asked them not to let me run out of oil. No show again. We ran out of oil in the middle of the night. It was freezing in the house. I called the emergency #. They couldn't come until 9pm! 18 hrs after I woke up to no heat. I called back after they opened and Luckily they sent an oil truck a few hrs later but still no heat because of clogged nozzles so we had to wait for a tech. We have vulnerable people in the house and this is totally irresponsible of Petro.

Petro provides excellent service. Their technicians are friendly, knowledgeable, and conscientious. We have been customers for over 30 years and hope to continue our business relationship for many more years.

They don’t have a “minus”star review. As a Petro customer for decades, this company has, like their installs, fallen into disrepair. The hot water heater I bought from them 7+ years ago leaked and fell apart. Over warranty by less than 5 months, Petro was only interested in selling a new heater and not even pro-rated. They subcontract their installations. The most recent installation of a new boiler, was attempted by drunk men who showed to my home but could not work because they were drunk. When they returned the following day, the banged and gouged the walls both bringing the new boiler into the house and removing the old boiler. My complaints about the hot water heater have fallen on deaf ears. We’re now going to Small Claims Court and I’ve hired a reputable firm that was cheaper for the same item by a significant amount of money. The installers weren’t drunk, I didn’t lose a days pay because they were not able to work the day I took off for the installation and they didn’t damage my home in the installation/delivery process.

I will never use another company again for my oil and propane services! Petro is the best! I love there monthly payment plans, look into it! very competitive pricing in a down economy where everything is up!

From the moment I called the Petro service number, my experience was great. The woman who handled my need was wonderfully professional and personal. I was advised that a service repair person would arrive between 9:45 AM and 12:15 PM...the arrival was at 9:45 AM...and the repairman immediately went to work, identified the problem and addressed the repair that was necessary. An hour or so later he left with my system perfectly personal. He was totally professional and was completely personal...he cared. My whole experience was a continuation of the quality service that I always receive from Petro.

STAY AWAY UNLESS YOU WANT TO BE FORCED TO REPLACE YOUR OIL TANK!!
Prior to my first delivery, Petro came to my house for a "courtesy" service/check up on my furnace & tank (my mistake for letting them inside). The technician then declared that my tank needed to be replaced, and "red capped"/"red tagged" my tank. Apparently, if an oil company red caps your tank, then no company is allowed to deliver you oil until the red cap is removed.
Petro conceded that my tank wasn't leaking, but they claimed that it might start leaking soon. Other than pointing to some slight discoloration, Petro couldnt provide any evidence or reasoning for how they knew my tank would start leaking soon—I guess they can predict the future. Petro never provided me a report of their assessment either.
Petro could, however, recommend a specific business that could replace my tank. Because of the strangeness of this all, I can only assume Petro, at minimum, receives some sort of kick-back benifit from this company, if not some sort of direct benefit (same parent company, for example).
I called another company to replace my tank. They correctly guessed, "Who tagged your tank? Petro? Yea they do that alot."
Bottom line, Petro callously and flippantly cut me and my family off from oil deliveries, for no apparent reason, unless I spent $5,000+ to replace my tank—3 weeks before Christmas, in the middle of winter. Dangerous, callous, and unnecessary. Stay away. Never let them in your house. -
Petro came and serviced my boiler . The technician left the hiker
Full and blew the valve . Flooded the entire basement . I posted the video to yelp. Absolute incompetence . Litigation inbound !
