Our backyard was generally a mud pit after a few days of heavy rain. This would make it miserable for grass cutting and letting the dogs out. I finally decided to try adding some drainage. I had several quotes but Mathais gave a fair price and clearly had a great deal of experience with drainage. There was a slight delay due to weather but while we were waiting for drier weather Mary was in contact with us regularly. When the weather permitted their crew came and performed the work pretty much as described. Leave it to mother nature. We have not gotten much rain since but with the few hard rains we have gotten the yard is drying out in hours now rather than days. I used to have large puddles (or ponds) from the rain which remained for several days making it impossible to cut. Initially the ground water was still visible during the rain but quickly dissipated. Overall, they did a great job I am now just waiting to get some “real” rain fall to test the system.

Sterner Waterproofing is the best! They are honest, hard-working, caring people who will take excellent care of you and your home. I had first called Ohio State Waterproofing because I had water in my basement. They gave me an astronomical estimate, told me they were going to have to dig up my entire foundation, inside and out, and even told me that the damage was so bad that my basement walls were going to collapse and my house was going to fall down! I told a friend what they said and she recommended having Sterner's come check out my house. Mathias totally put my mind at ease and immediately figured out the problem and only had to repair 2 corners of my house. And guess what? My basement has had no more leaking and the walls didn't collapse!! My house is still standing! It's a miracle! Thank God for Mathias, Mary, and the crew!!! :)

I was under a time frame to have a sewer line tied from my house to the street and my septic tank collapsed. I reside in Olmsted Falls. I was referred to Sterner Excavating by a friend and they were very prompt about returning my call and getting someone to give me an estimate. The price was pretty much the same as other previous estimates, but they were very good about explaining the process and assuring me things would be done before my deadline. Even though the weather wasn’t ideal they got everything done as they said they would and made the experience as painless as possible from their end. I highly recommend their service if you find yourself needing anything like this done.

We decided to add on to our home a 900sqft addition. Sounds easy enough, right? Wrong!

Our home was built in 1825. It had a small addition put on in the 1970s. This house has 3 different levels of foundation, and it is built on a hill. It came with many challenges.

Mathias Sterner was the man for the job. He and his crew are not only knowledgeable and hardworking, but they also take great pride in their work. The foundation they built here will last another 200 years.

The foundation is great, the work was great, and the overall experience working with them was great but the thing that stood out the most to us was how they treat you like you’re family or close friends. Mathias and his crew are genuinely kind people who can be trusted- which is so refreshing when dealing with contractors.

If they could build my foundation perfectly, then you will have no problems with your “new build”.

Had a severe drainage issue with my backyard. I had more than one company come out and give ridiculous quotes. Sterner came out and did the work with quality and efficiency and ended up doing more than asked for the same $. They also built a fence for the yard at a reasonable cost.

We were looking into waterproofing and received overpriced quotes and then a neighbor recommended sterner's. We contacted them and they came out and decided we only needed a partial waterproof to fix the problem areas instead of wasting out money on work that didn't need done like other people. They contacted us to set up a date but since we didn't have all the money from the original quote they did give us a partial discount. The original quote was still extremely fair and reasonable. They came over and started the work and it immediately made a difference. It rained before they could fill the hole back in and even then we had no water. When they worked in the front of the house we ran into several issues including not being able to move my car and broken pipes. They made it work and found solutions that worked for us. We have already recommended them and will be using their service again to fix our backyard drainage issue. I highly recommend this company, they are honest and aren't trying to steal your money like big name companies who wanna scare you into work that doesn't need done.

We bought a house a year ago and had no idea of the foundation issue, it was hidden well until our living room flooded with a bad storm. Sterner excavating did an awesome job on installing our downspouts lateral on our new construction home to pond. Mathias and his crew worked together, and efficiently to make everything work well. They offer great service, good price, an do the job the right way.

Mathias and his crew did an excellent job of cleaning up my property and taking down a dead tree that was dangerous. They went over and above to make sure that everything was cleaned up and even fixed my fence so my dogs wouldn't get out. A little disappointed that he is not doing the waterproofing for a week or two, but I expect that will be the same excellent work.

Fast forward two years. Had another problem which Mr. Sterner and Anthony fixed. The whole time, his girlfriend Mary kept bugging me for payments. Now the shoe is on the other foot. He sent a pest control guy over to my house because I had racoons in the basement. I had to forward a payment of $125 to him to get started because allegedly Sterner's didn't have the money to pay him at that time. This was over six weeks ago now and I am still waiting to be reimbursed. Mary does not return my calls. I hate to think about it, but I may have to go to small claims court to get my money. I know if Mr Sterner was aware of this, he would have her bring me a check right away. I guess she thinks that because she has been shacking up with him for 26 years, she can do as she pleases.

Great team to work with. The guys worked hard and kept things moving fast. They took the time to keep me informed and made sure I was comfortable every step of the way. The guys all had pride in their work and did things right. Even taking the time to correct the work of the previous owner before moving forward with the project. Job site was kept clean and minimal damage to property. If dirt settled and grass grew overnight, you would never know they were here. Very pleased with the work done by Sterner. I was selling my house and noticed standing water in the downspout. I used my pressure washer for days and couldn’t clear half of the drainage system. I had a host of vendors out to provide quotes and lead time and after a half dozen vendor meetings, I thought I wouldn’t find someone I could trust to do the job. When I called Sterner Excavating, I knew that this experience was different. Mary was fantastic at communicating every step in the process and Mathias is as knowledgeable as you will ever find. They used a camera and locator to map the sewer system of the entire house and immediately identified where the issue was. The team (especially Tim and Sean) began isolating sections and opening up downspout legs to get the decades of old shingle sand out of each section in the blocked leg, until water flowed like never before.
I cannot say enough about how positive my experience was, and how their work was the cornerstone to allowing me to sell my home.

Business aside, every person I met from Sterner Excavating was incredibly hard working, personable, caring and focused on the job at hand. I loved working with them and will ALWAYS recommend them to ANYONE with an issue.

We panicked when our basement family room took on some water during a big storm and called Sterner to come take a look at it for us, expecting major foundation repairs to be needed.

What we got instead was an honest and caring assessment from Mathias and Mary who recommended starting with the least invasive and least expensive option of jetting a clogged exterior drain near where the water had come in. They didn’t think the issue had been long term based on the condition of the interior and thought the slow drain was the most likely source of our trouble. They got us scheduled asap since there were more storms on the way and then it was a waiting game.

We just had another huge storm last night and thankfully, no water inside our house. We fully believe the Sterner team had our best interests in mind and we’re so glad the drain seems to have been the issue.

Another thing to note: Mary checked on us periodically after some mild storms to see if we were having issues and that’s the kind of care you only get from using local companies.

So happy to have found Sterner. I wanted the job done right and by people I could trust and was not disappointed. I needed my front and backyard graded and although a small job, Mathias and his crew took care and did the job meticulously. Mary kept in constant contact with me throughout the whole project. The previous homeowner had an addition put on the home but did not account for drainage issues and standing water was becoming an issue along the slab foundation. Mathias Sterner came out to assess the situation and offered a very reasonable solution to this problem, without trying to "sell" what I did not need. He guaranteed the solution, and was very adamant about me letting him know that the issue was corrected, which I did. The experience working with Sterner was extremely positive and I would highly recommend their services. From the first interaction through wrap-up of the project, there was consistent communication, explanation of what was being done and why, and no surprises. We called Sterner when we had water in our basement. Their response time was excellent. Mathias came out, assessed the problem, and described to us exactly what the problem was and what would be needed to fix it. He and his crew were knowledgeable, polite (even though I kept asking questions!) and thorough. And communication with Mary was awesome. We cannot praise them and the quality of their work enough. We were so happy with the waterproofing job they did that we had them put a culvert pipe in our ditch by the street. We have used Sterner Excavating for 2 projects and both were completed in a timely manner and as promised. The first was a French drain which considerably helped alleviate standing water in our yard. This was many years ago and is still working efficiently. Recently we had our gravel driveway reconstructed. The existing driveway was old and the base was large rocks and bricks with minimal gravel. Mathias was able to dig it out and add gravel and level it nicely. We are very happy with his work and would recommend him. I also have to mention that Mary usually answers the phone when you call, or gets back to you quickly, which I think is important and appreciated!

I'm a President of an HOA that has had alot of foundation work over the years. I've been looking for a company for several years that I can trust. We hired Sterner to do 2 jobs recently and we are very happy with their work and integrity. We did not receive a price till Mathias did a very thorough inspection. In one case , the work needed was extensive. In the second , the work needed was minimal. I felt like he gave us an honest evaluation in both cases. Much appreciated !

Sterner's slogan is "expect the best". That says it all. Mathais Sterner doesn't do mediocre work just to get the job. If the foundation needs fixing he's going to fix it right. In my case it was digging all the way down to the foundation, shoring up walls, etc.
I also had the basement floor replaced. Good thing as we found completely filled pipes. Now it feels and looks like a new home.
Mathais and his crew work together great. They respect each other and work as a team. They also handled the moving of plumbing lines and provided me with other contractors equally as good.
I cannot recommend them more highly. They do the right thing. You should, too.
