Another successful landscaping project with Big Sky Landscaping done!
We really wanted to thank Armando and Everardo for the fabulous job they did transforming our side yard to a wonderful space! They are very easy to work with and have that “eye” for the details that make the project look great. Armando can make a boulder look like it just came out of the ground! They are both amazing and we have really enjoyed the finished projects. Our yard looks so much better from working with Big Sky. Thank you, guys! -
The end result of Big Sky's project at our home is a beautiful backyard. A special thanks to Ben, the Project Manager. He was a pleasure to work with, a good communicator, and open to our ideas. Thanks also to his crew of Ruben (the foreman), Armando (lead mason), and Jorge (lead irrigation tech). The workers did a great job cleaning up after each day's work. We love the custom water feature and fire pit. There were some delays on the project due to issues with material delivery. There were some issues with being upsold on several items, communication issues between sales and project management, and Big Sky's need for immediate payment the moment a bill was delivered. Overall, we are very happy with the results.

Excellent work! They told me what the project would entail in terms of cost, timing, and execution and then did exactly what they said they're going to do. They created an inviting space that exceeded expectations. I will definitely be hanging out in the front yard more as the weather warms up.

Excellent company. Reuben and his crew were great. Good communication and efficient work ethic. We recommend this organization to anyone needing landscape design and implementation.

Sage Landscapes did a great job in repointing a brick wall and adding pavers to our courtyard. Matt and the crew do quality work and a reasonable price.

Matt was prompt in replying to my request for an estimate for specific services. His estimate was reasonable, the wait time for implementing the service was appropriate. Matt and Kate cheerfully arrived in less that optimal weather conditions to do the work which made our yard look GREAT for fall and winter. I look forward to having him do more work for me.

Matt Bowman and his crew are super landscapers and gardeners! I have had them weekly now over a year and couldn't be happier. I love Matt's ideas. He is so knowledgeable about all the plants and shrubs and knows just how to treat everything and when to do it. I highly recommend Sage Landscapes!

I’m very sad to see all the wonderful reviews for Sage Landscaping because it was the opposite of my experience. 🙁
So many say how communicative Matt was and didn’t leave them hanging and how wonderful it was to work with them. This is what I expected, as they came highly recommended; however, I found them very uncommunicative before and during the project. They left us hanging several times. We had to sometimes text/call 3 or 4 times to get a response, and we had to have them redo several things, as they didn’t adhere to what was in their bid and contract.
The resulting path is beautiful for sure, but it was a struggle from beginning to end to get it done (at least almost) right. Now as I’m about to plant in the prepared beds, I find that it’s all still mucky clay under a mere 1” of topsoil, even though their bid stated they would dig 6” down (which they did), amending the soil beneath (which they didn’t do) before topping it with 2-4” of topsoil (which they also didn’t do).
Again, when I brought this to their attention, my email goes ignored. Had I the energy, I would bring a suit against them, as it was expensive for subpar work.
Heartbroken, really, especially after seeing how everyone else appeared to get the kind of service and quality promised to me. -
Matt Bowman of Sage Landscapes has completed several projects for us this past year and we have been very pleased with all of them; weekly lawn maintenance, installing a new irrigation system, planting our blueberries and creating “rabbit proof” fencing, among other items. In addition, he structurally pruned several shrubs, which transformed them into beautiful, healthy plants again.
Matt’s pricing is fair, he is very knowledgeable and he treats his employees with respect. I highly recommend him.

They were able to complete the work quickly and we are very satisfied with the results. It’s nice to have a backyard where we can host friends and family now.

I love my new extended patio. Their work is excellent and prices the best out of three bids. They also dig out my old front lawn and replaced it with new dirt seed and mulch. They were very quick, courteous, and great to work with!

Sage Landscapes did an amazing job. The crew were amazing and completed the job very quickly. I highly recommend anyone to hire sage to complete any projects. They were amazing.

This was the first time my company has used Sage Landscape and we will definitely be using them again! From my first phone call and email communication about the project, their quick turnaround on the the bid, to scheduling and then completion was so easy. They did a beautiful job! I look forward to working with them again!

Our project with Sage just wrapped, and I hate to report that it was a mess. Before I get into the reasons why, I’d highly recommend reading Christine’s review here—she touched on several issues that my wife and I faced during our project.
For starters, their communication was incredibly spotty. It took me weeks to initially reach Matt, despite calling, texting and writing via contact form on their site until he finally replied. Communication temporarily improved at that point, but remained impersonal and unreliable throughout the process.
Their designer met us at home to discuss our budget and vision, which we approved after a few iterations of their proposal. This was our first landscaping endeavor, and the most expensive project we’ve tackled yet as first-time homeowners. Given the sterling reviews on Google, we thought Sage would be responsive, precise, thoughtful and professional.
However, this was not the case. Their order of operations, for instance, would seriously hamper this project and cause plenty of problems that easily could have been avoided. Instead of waiting for our Acrylite patio cover to arrive, they rushed right into the demolition of our existing concrete patio and installed cedar steps and pavers. In case you were curious: no, we weren’t in a rush to get this completed, and expressed that when we were first discussing the project with Sage. This was back in April, which proved to be an erratic and wet month weather-wise. The steps and pavers were exposed to the elements for weeks before the patio cover arrived. As a result, we had mold on the cedar and efflorescence all over the pavers, which they didn’t offer to seal until after the fact.
On top of this, we found a bunch of metal shrapnel and plastic strewn throughout the yard after they installed the patio cover. When I told Matt about this, he didn’t apologize or offer to clean it up, so we had to do it ourselves. Highlighting obvious issues to Matt, cleaning up after his team, reminding him of work yet to be completed, and reiterating unanswered questions were motifs throughout our experience in working with him.
I must also note that the overall quality of their sourced materials is subpar. The cedar they brought included an actively rotting plank that I asked to be replaced for structural integrity. Matt reluctantly accepted. In the case of a damaged paver on the main patio, however, Matt’s first response was that it isn't that noticeable, which isn’t exactly what you want to hear after spending $20k on a project. In fact, we had to fight tooth and nail for Matt to even consider charging less for replacing this paver. He told us it’s not fair that he compensate us for this remedy and whined about how much money he’s already spent on our project. His compromise on the paver was to have us pay for and fetch another one along with sealant so he didn’t have to incur the expense. Keep in mind, this minor fix was less than a fraction of a percent of our project’s budget. This conversation in particular revealed an ugly side that made us feel like nothing but a check deposit to Matt. He already got our money and didn’t care about making things right.
This leads to my final point, which is the complete lack of professionalism. You’d think a business owner would possess some accountability and try to remedy a rocky situation like this. Matt took the opposite approach, taking zero ownership and unwilling to maturely mend things with us as we closed the job out.
All of that being said, I would simply suggest that you save yourself a headache and consider another local landscaper. Sage was not worth the hassle and their execution left plenty to be desired. -
Excellent is my rating, everything we requested was done to our satisfaction, they provide a complete service.

GREAT experience. I was referred to Matt at Sage Landscapes by Portland Rock and Landscape. I had started an ambitious quarantine project of re-doing my front yard with a winding paver path. We got about 70% of the way through the path before realizing we were over our skis and needed a professional to finish the job with a flourish. Matt called back promptly and made a day work within my short notice timeline (within a week) and came out on time with 2 guys and spent the whole day finishing the path. It looked absolutely incredible and it was not an easy thing to just pick up where we left off. They re-did the parts we did poorly and left us with just a really polished, professional looking end product. I love the path and get compliments constantly. Very reasonably priced in my opinion. He even upgraded the equipment to something that would leave less dust and did not charge me, even though I chose the cheaper option to begin with - this didn't go unnoticed and frankly was refreshing to work with a company that didn't try and gouge you at every turn possible.

Today Sage Landscaping completed our front yard. My house had a total transformation. No longer an ugly duckling. You all know that story. I absolutely cried happy tears. My little house in Southeast Portland looks like $1 million. What a dream. Matt and his team are true professionals, certainly respectful, work site was always tidy and the project was started and completed on time. Absolutely Outstanding! Great start to 2021. Going to enjoy coming home from working at OHSU everyday even more! Stay safe and healthy and hire these guys!

FANTASTIC. A+++++++
Wow, beautiful! What a wonderful backyard. We had such an ambitious project to build a patio, yoga deck, swinging couches, and water feature. Matt and Kate immediately understood the vision and were building on it. The execution was remarkable. The team worked 10 hour days 6 days a week and were extremely hard working with excellent craftsmanship.
I connected and received quotes with several other contractors and agencies for landscape bids before choosing Sage Landscapes. It was clear Sage Landscapes with Matt and Kate was the only company capable of our project on time and on budget, and they surely did amazing work. Now, everyday in our backyard feels like vacation!
