General Contractor reviews in Vancouver, Washington

I've hired Vulcan on two separate occasions to turn my patios from dirt and rock to gorgeous pavers. I would recommend seeking out James, he is a design specialist and can help turn any vision into reality while improving the design along the way. He believes in his work and the company and that really shines through in his work and conversation. James and Vulcan did an amazing job, both times. Unfortunately, after the first job, we had some pooling issues with water in the rain, which happens in this weather. Vulcan was extremely responsive, came out and fixed the issue without hesitation or hassle. It was how they handled the fix that led me to hire them the second time. I am very confident in this company and would recommend them to friends and family. The warranty is great, and they will do the right thing if any issues come about. They did for me, 5 stars.

Turned out lower backyard from a mud and mulch pit into a backyard oasis with a stone paver patio for a fire pit and a large section of artificial turf for the kids to play on. We had a sloped yard with lots of leveling work to be done and needed some small retaining walls. The retaining walls now are lovely benches for when we entertain. Our coach potato kids now can't get enough of being outside in our new backyard playing. Jeremy was an excellent designer with Vulcan- he by far spent most amount of time of all people who submitted quotes to us in terms of understanding our project and thinking and planning. He quoted us a "low" "medium" and "high" cost buckets which was nice and no other company did. They were timely, professional and hardworking. The crew even saved my mulch left over from the project and hauled it to another part of my yard so I could garden and compost with it (my request). The crew had to scale a large concrete staircase to get to the project. They were so hard working! All costs were agreed upon in writing and when an inevitable extra cost came up- it was written up as a cost order that we discussed and agreed on before implementing. No hidden upcharges at the end! Love their work. Highly recommend

Vulcan design is probably one of the friendliest, most responsive, and professional companies you’ll ever use if you’re looking to do a patio/covered porch/yard design. We hired them to do our back patio cover, paver patio with a seat bench, and sod/rock installation in our bare back yard (we purchased brand new). They did fabulous and the owners/project manager are so nice!! They stand behind their work 100%, and they do an excellent job. Thank you Eric and Jaime for everything you’ve done for us!

A friendly, professional experience from beginning to end. Our designer, James, created a beautiful background paver design within our budget. Everyone on the construction crew was communicative, organized and really great at their jobs.
The actual construction project was done in less than a week and the crew’s attention to every small detail was impressive.
Couldn’t be happier. Would highly recommend Vulcan to anyone looking for beautifully designed, quality hardscaping work. -
I hired Vulcan to do a project involving a retaining wall and a new yard. I worked with Stuart and Tyler. I was very pleased with everything about the experience. It was done on time, on budget, and the end result was better than I hoped. I will hire them again for the next project at my home.

I have used Vulcan Design twice. One project was a patio in the backyard and the other was replacing two parking strips with pavers; we live on a corner lot. The people are friendly and easy to work with. In both instances the design and consulting on the front end went very well. They provided tiered pricing options and all were fairly priced. The forecasted job durations were accurate. There were no surprises with the final bills. The craftsmanship was excellent. Once they arrive, the work happens quickly. However, be prepared to flex with the proposed start date b/c that might move. Vulcan Design likes to stick with a job until it is complete instead of bouncing around between jobs, which is good. If the person in front of you starts changing their mind about a bunch of things though, it could delay your work.

We chose Vulcan for three major projects on our house: a total front deck rebuild/redesign, full exterior paint job, and a siding repair/waterproofing protect.
We're very satisfied with all three projects. We did get several bids for all the projects and Vulcan was mostly in the middle when it comes to price. What made us feel comfortable paying a little more originally was the fact that the company has a design department that came out and helped us visualize a re-engineering of our front deck that was poorly built by the ordinal home builder. The designs included 3D renderings and it was just clear that we were working with a professional building company as opposed to an independent general contractor.
With three major projects, spread out over the course of several months, we ended up having things that needed to be tweaked from the original plan, some unexpected issues that weren't obvious until the crews tore into things, and various other audibles that needed to be called. Throughout all of it, the company was just fantastic with communication. I never ever felt like I was being fleeced in any way when something popped up, and I always had a single point person who was able to work with me to keep things moving along.
One thing that I really appreciated was the company's end-of-job walk through process. If I had an issue with something, even after the final walk around, they would send someone out to fix it without any trouble whatsoever. That's not to say there were lots of issues, we just had several major projects going on at once.
I would definitely recommend Vulcan. Professional, clean, respectful, and just filled with people who clearly care about what they do.

It's been two months since our patio installation by Vulcan Design & Construction. Our pleasure with what we are calling the patio/terrace, since part of it is elevated over a garden area, has only gotten greater. Last evening my wife said that it might have been one of the best home improvements we have ever had done. Vulcan not only fulfilled our project objectives; they completed it on schedule, with meticulous attention to detail from the planning stage to the final walk through. We could not be more pleased with the results and will definitely call Vulcan first for any future landscape projects. Thanks again to our design consultant, project manager, and outstanding work crew.

Vulcan did a great job on our patio paver project. The crew was great, very friendly and easy to work with. Job was done on time and looks great!

Vulcan did a wonderful job on my front porch. Working through the design with Derek, and construction with Greg was a very pleasant and easy process. Their attention to detail on this old 1950’s house was much appreciated.

My wife and I took several bids on a Retaining wall project. Vulcan design advertised in the local Newsletter so that is how we found them. Stu was the Consultant Met with us about our plan. Stu did all the work upfront to help us with design, give us all the information about materials, And project Our cost and time upfront. I Assure there are very few contractors who put the effort upfront without any sort of work Assurance. Working with the Vulcan team was wonderful. The communication, the flexibility, and the quality of work are all top-notch. I would recommend them to my family and I did.

The process was very smooth and excellent quality! We had the patio, RV parking area and driveway all done in pavers and it looks sharp. We have people drive by our house and point! My initial request was pretty basic, but Eric suggested elements that made the project stand out! And they pay attention to the detail to slope all the elements with painstaking accuracy.

We had a large outdoor space addition on our house and Vulcan's design and building team did an excellent job. We were on a strict timeline to finish for a grad party and they made sure everything was finished in time. We have had so many compliments and we love our new space! We would recommend Vulcan and use them again.

I honestly can’t say enough nice things about Vulcan. From first meeting Jeremy to discuss our project where we kept adding things (I can almost hear him wondering if we ever were going to stop adding on to the project). With other contractors, we always had to fight to get information. Not so with Vulcan, we could always get hold of someone. We set up a group chat where we could ask our questions and someone always answered.
We never felt like this was just a job to them. They always listened to our ideas and let us know if our ideas just weren’t feasible. We appreciate that, we aren’t in construction, just because we have an idea doesn’t mean it’s a good one. We also appreciated their ideas to make our project even better. It truly was a partnership.
We had a second contractor that was involved in our project for retractable screens. Once again, their communication was top-notch. We didn’t have to coordinate with the two of them, they handled everything.
We are actually in some ways sad that the project has ended, we’re going to miss our Vulcan guys. But never fear, I already have ideas for another project to send their way! -
We could not be more pleased with our patio covers from Vulcan Design! Jaime did a great job with the design, gorgeous. Anthony De Luz managed the project and he was there every step of the way. He made sure every crew had clear instructions and that the work was done right. He far exceeded our expectations. We are so excited to have a backyard we can use all year long. Thanks Vulcan!

After signing, the first sign of trouble was communication was very minimal and hard to get any answers, but we knew construction companies were busy. We were told by Sean to email him example pictures of what we wanted to do and he would pass them on to the person who would be in charge of our job, named Eli. We emailed Sean pictures on 5/27/17 of what we wanted to do. After a few more weeks on June 19th, we finally got in touch with Eli, he asked me to email him the same photo's I had already emailed Sean. So I thought we finally might get the ball rolling on the job. Then, we weren't hearing back from Eli. Vulcan contacted us to let us know we would be working with a new person named Tomasi. We found out later that Eli left the company.
Once we met Tomasi, things started moving along. At the end of June, they would pop over to the house in the evening to start prepping the space. On 7/5, they finished getting the space prepped and ready. but didn't remove the sprinkler heads, so we couldn't use the sprinkler system. Unfortunately, they couldn't give us a time when the concrete would be poured as 2017 was a busy year for construction. So for the next couple weeks we had to hand water and buy a sprinkler to water the lawn, which didn't work so well. Our nice yard slowly withered away. On 7/17, they came out to do finish the job and we were super excited. So we sat inside out of the way, watching the guys do their work. After some time, we realized there was a problem, a very big problem. Tomasi came to the door to talk and he let us know that the concrete was setting too fast and they couldn't finish stamping the concrete. He said they would be back tomorrow with a jackhammer and remove it all. We also found out that the guy they hired to pump in the concrete, drove a stake through our sprinkler system and that the sprinkler system was no longer working.
On 7/18 Tomasi and his crew came over to remove everything. Luckily, we only had to wait a few more days for them to try again. On 7/21, they came out again and everything went smoothly. They came back a couple days later to take off the forms and when removing the forms, they broke off a large piece on the edge of the concrete. They said they would come back later to fix the issue. Then on 7/31, Tomasi came back out and fixed the sprinkler system (so we were without sprinklers for a month) but said he would have to come back to fix the concrete. It wasn't until early August that he came out to "fix" the concrete and what he did was just use quikrete which is not anywhere near the same color but said that was all he could do.
When we met with Eric (one of the owners) for the final walk through, we showed him all of the issues. Rebar was left behind our fence, they dumped excess concrete at the end of the sidewalk (we have a corner lot), our yard was half dead due to no sprinklers (see before and after pictures of the yard), we had dead plants, concrete was not fixed properly, the concrete was never sealed as Sean said it would be. I told Eric I was not going to pay full price for a job with this many problems. He left and said he would be in touch on what was going to happen with all these issues. He called me back a few days later and we discussed the issues and he was dead set on us paying full price and I again said no way. We ended the conversation without an agreement and with none of the issues above being solved. So, I waited for a call to in regards to what was going to happen and that call never came. The rebar is still behind my fence, the concrete is still and the end of the sidewalk, I rehung the fence properly, and the concrete was never fixed and later that year, it developed a pretty long crack. I never heard from Eric again and we continued on with our lives. Then 3 years later I get a call on 4/22/20 saying we owe them money. We agreed to give them $1200 just to get them out of our lives (even though we are both on unemployment). HORRIBLY RUN COMPANY! Review would be more thorough if there wasn't a character limit. -
Based on an actual personal experience unlike the last reviewer who is a possible friend of a possible customer, I am an ACTUAL customer. Vulcan Design and Construction did an incredible job on my back patio and patio cover in Forest Grove, OR in 2018. The owners Jamie and Eric were very responsive to all my questions and concerns throughout the project. I wanted a quaint outdoor space with a small deck for a rocking chair leading to a larger patio for seating and a firepit. They listened to all my requests and built the outdoor living space of dreams! The Roman God of Craftsmen aka Vulcan would be proud!

We hired Vulcan to build a patio cover for us. We got a few quotes for the cover, and theirs was competitive and they were well reviewed, so we went with them. The design consultant, James, did a great job communicating with us about their options and wasn't pushy when we went with a cheaper option than our original idea. There were a few issues during construction, including a minor defect that was promptly fixed under warranty, but we are very happy with the final product.
The main issue we encountered that makes this a four-star review was poor communication during the building process. The build took a while, and we were often not sure when to expect workers to come for the next step. We had to check in regularly to see when to expect them next. We weren't in a great hurry but we would have liked better communication about when to expect people to show up and do work in our backyard.
In terms of the final product, though, we are happy - the patio cover is exactly what we wanted. -
Title: Exceptional Service and Quality Paving Project!
"I am thrilled with the paving project completed in my backyard by Vulcan Design & Construction. From the initial consultation to the final walk-through, the entire experience was seamless and impressive. The team was professional, courteous, and attentive to every detail. Design Consultant, Stu and Project Supervisor, Tyler are very courteous , professional and went out of the way to work around our timings.
The project was completed on time, within budget, and exceeded my expectations. The quality of the materials and workmanship is top-notch. I am thoroughly enjoying my newly paved outdoor .
I highly recommend this company for any paving project. Their commitment to excellence, customer satisfaction, and exceptional results makes them a standout in the industry. Thank you for a job well done 👍 -
Since the weather finally turned more spring-like, Ken Weaver and Stuart Mosier once again came out to my house to complete my patio project and repair my wild irrigation system.
The patio looks even better, now that Stuart, Ken and their crew power washed, resanded and applied the glossy sealer. The colors just pop now! During the winter and early spring, the patio was rarely dry, but when it was, it looked almost chalky, and the colors were very muted. I love the way it looks now that the sealer has been applied. Additionally, I know now it's not going to be stained by nature or me. It looks much more complete now!
The irrigation system installed six years ago when this house was new had never been the greatest: water everywhere it shouldn't be and not good coverage where it should be. Ken and Stuart both ran through the sprinklers more than once on not very warm days to diagnose and cure the water-waste and water-wanting areas. The crew that actually did the work was very quick and thorough. It was very hard to even find the places where they had to dig up my lawn for new heads and lines when they were done. They also demonstrated exactly what they had done and why they did it in all three zones. We ran through the sprinklers together one more time, and this time, no more watering my "crop" of concrete in the driveway or blacktop in the street.
Stuart and Ken will be back on my property within the next year or so to help me plan and build a pergola over the top of my pretty patio ... I'm looking forward to that project as well ...
