We have a wood foundation that hasn’t had the waterproofing replaced since the 80’s when it was originally built, and water was pouring into our crawlspace through the wood and between the top of the concrete and the bottom of the wood baseplate. We elected to replace the waterproofing and install a French drain to divert the water from entering into the crawlspace.

Out of the 5 contractors that I contacted and received proposals from, A-1 was the only contractor to provide me with a reasonable price for the work, approximately 50% of the other contractor proposals. Since Fall/Winter were approaching, we elected to wait until the following Spring to start the work. We placed a small down-payment to lock in the price and get on the books for the following year’s work. As we were one of the first summer jobs, work started as soon as the weight restrictions were lifted for the Anchorage roadways.
Once construction started, it went fast. Our house is too crowded with fences and utilities, so the sides and back of our house had to be hand dug. The trench was hand dug in less than 2 days! All said, the job was completed in about 5-7 working days, and the crew wasn’t shy about working on Saturdays to catch up if they fell behind. The crew was hardworking, courteous, and professional. They only disturbed the lawn areas that were affected by the work, and their housekeeping was exceptional. They cleaned up at the end of every day, picking up their water bottles and construction debris. They operated their machinery with precision and carefulness, not damaging any portion of our house or property.

The only thing that could be improved is their communication to the customer regarding construction start and scheduled workdays.

Overall, we are very happy with A-1 and the final product that they delivered. We will be using A-1 again for any future work that decide to do.

This company did a great job building a rock wall for us. We were very happy with the quality of the work, and especially happy with the professionalism of the crew who did the work. When they were done with the construction, they took rack, broom and hose to the area (even the grass) to make sure it was clean and tidy! Very impressive.
My only complaint is in the waiting to find out 'when' we would be put on the schedule. An estimate of 'next week', or 'two weeks from now' would have been helpful; It turned out I only got one day's warning. Thankfully, I was flexible.
I would use them again.

A-1 attempted to deliver the wrong product, wasted a day of my time and offered no options to try and make it right.

I was referred to A-1 by Anchorage Sand and Gravel as a possible option to have several cubic yards of gravel delivered to my residential backyard area as they did not have a truck small enough to drive on my side yard.

I called and discussed with a seemingly experienced A-1 service agent delivery options and repeatedly emphasized that I needed the fill gravel to be dumped in the backyard and a portion of side lawn would have to be driven on by the truck. She said the smallest truck they had could do it and we scheduled an afternoon (between 12 - 5) delivery.

The day of delivery the truck arrived at 3pm with top soil instead of fill gravel. The driver was nice about it but had to call and confirm with the company that I was correct and they would have to redeliver later. She then stated that they wouldn’t be able to drive on the side lawn as it was against company policy. After another round of calls she said management refused to make an exception and left. I called the company and spoke to the office manager who didn’t act very concerned and stated employees were new and she would talk to management about making an exception.

An hour later, a field manager from A-1 showed up at my house with the same explanation that they wouldn't drive on my side lawn and said that he “seriously doubted” anyone had told me they could. I was extremely frustrated with his insinuation that I was lying and expressed my displeasure with my time being wasted. He stated that he himself could probably drive the truck on the side yard and would talk to his manager and call me the next day if they decided to make an exception.

I received a call from the office manager the following morning and she flatly stated they wouldn’t help me. I again stated that my weekday afternoon was wasted and I felt my time had value and she replied “everyone’s time is valuable.”

The company management is not well versed in customer service (you don’t insinuate the customer is lying) and even in this small town there are many other landscaping companies to contact. I give A-1 a one star.

Update: A-1 Manager Sam responded below with an accusation that I asked for free labor. I had asked him how much the laborers cost (what they were paid per hour) VS the company mark up in the hopes I could pay them their base hourly pay, not free labor. This was me trying to find some way to make this messed up situation work since health issues preclude me from hauling tons of gravel. The bottom line is A-1 Landscape made several mistakes and offered no real solutions. They said they could deliver to the back yard, they wouldn’t. They even brought the wrong product. What they were not willing to do was anything to correct their mistakes and instead pushed the blame back on me the customer. Their response was a bland apology at best and I will never use them in any way again.

From my original phone call to inquire about price, start to finish, these folks did a great job! They quoted the price for a load of topsoil to be delivered which was the best in town, and exactly as they promised, their driver called when he was on his way and delivered it on time. I've bought topsoil several times in my 35 years up here and this was absolutely the "cleanest" ever. A very professional company with very good people working for them. I highly recommend them! They do what they say they're going to do at the price they quote!

Highly recommend this lawn care service company. They did a great job at my house and I used them the first time this year in May. Was very happy with the lawn service.

This company is very difficult to deal with. 95% of the time you have to go through an answering service, where you may or most likely may not get a call back. Mulch that was supposed to arrive on a Saturday didn't come until the next Friday. At the same time they were supposed to deliver large rocks that I had purchased elsewhere. Those didn't arrive until the Tuesday after that. It took multiple calls across nearly two weeks for something that was supposed to fairly simple. Then when it came to making now a special trip for the rocks they charged $315 additional and expected me to unload them. Then after all that, they dumped the rocks so that they broke. These guys are terrible.

Regardless of the owner response below, everything I relayed is exactly how it happened. I stand by my review, and would recommend anyone else.

A-1 just finished putting down stone and lots of mulch in my backyard. I am really impressed with their hard-working crew. They did a beautiful job and so quickly! My backyard looks better than I could have hoped for. Thanks!

Did a lot of business with them in the summer and spent a lot of money, it was good for the most part.
But when we tried to get some estimate on cost for snow removal, could not get a simple answer and was transferred to manager that was straight out rude.

When I asked the manager why he was been rude he's answer "you holding off my business office girl getting her frustrated with your questions, you can call another company" wow! Just wow!

I will be calling another company for sure, I suggest you give your business to someone else that actually cares about customer service, no one deserves to be treated with such disrespect.

Our office/building recently switched snow removal services to A1 this season and are so happy we did! Sam and Melodie at A1 have spent time to ensure all our questions were answered and that the service we were promised is in fact what we are receiving. Its so worth it to get quality customer care these days and nice to know that its still exists when it is so often hard to find anymore! Thanks for keeping our parking lots safe and clear for our employees and patients!!!!

Best all around, exceptional final results every employee puts in a great deal and emense amount of labor into the work being done and its clearly displayed when the job is complete seeing the end result. And don't get me started on the friendly atmosphere always leave you with a smile and a warm-hearted feeling. They are professional at the job. On point and under budget. I have not got landscaping done from this company but I can speak on their character! They are honest fair people! My husband bought a mower and something happened where it it didn’t work. We brought it back to them and they attempted a repair, a couple days later it stopped working again. I was worried with buying something used we were out of luck. Us being a very small business the amount we paid was going to put us back quite a bit. My husband contacted them and they refunded us! I was so surprised and am just so thankful there are still good honest people in the community!

Needed lots of work on a new yard. A-1 performed a site visit, did a walk thru with me of my needs, made valuable suggestions. I got lots of river rock installed, new lawn, beautiful fence. They were thorough and did a great job. I felt the cost was reasonable for what I required. When I had questions they were always quick to respond. These will be my go to Yard upgrade and care team as we make our improvements. Thanks to all.

I think I can't be any happier with the work A-1 Lawn & Landscaping did for me. They did a beautiful job installing gravel and rock beds around the perimeter of my house, installing new lawn in my back yard and correcting a few other issues in my backyard.
What nice folks to deal with from the office staft to the working crew. They deliver. I was really impressed with the attention my job received and how quickly it was done. In two days I had a completely new yard. The crew was very nice, hard working and meticulous about their work.
George came by everyday to see how the job was going and check in with me, that shows me that the company cares about their customers. I most definitely got my money's worth. It's only been a couple of days but already receiving compliments from my neighbors.

FIRST, landscaping crew should NOT show up in a residential neighborhood beginning their equipment, it being a Saturday night at 7:00pm. Second, they should have been here during daytime hours. For years, I've had to make complaints over and over again. It's rude. Moms and dads who've worked all week do not want to be annoyed by a landscaping company that doesn't know much about appropriate timing, dispatching, common sense, etc. I give a big thumbs down 👎🏻

Did not make me happy. Throughout the project I raised concerns multiple times about how the installment of the lawn was not going to successful due to the conditions they would leave it in claiming it would grow in fine. They would dismiss my concerns and repeat "we will make you happy" only to add a change order and then offer to quote me for ongoing lawn maintenance. I am left with a patchy, very uneven yard as I said would happen. The newest in the neighborhood and the worst in the neighborhood.

A-1 recently installed sod and plants at our downtown home. It transformed the yard in a really pleasing way. George and crew did an outstanding job from start to finish. We couldn’t be happier and highly recommend A-1 to other owners considering landscaping work.

I am so mad that I didn’t get A-1 lawn and Landscaping to my house sooner! I can’t even believe it’s the same house. I cannot express enough how grateful I am for the job A-1 did, their attention to detail is far superior compared to others I’ve worked with. I am totally satisfied with my choice of A-1 for landscaping prior to listing my house for sale. I definitely think the work they did will help my house sell quicker and potentially for more money!!!

We just had A1 repair (rebuild) a cast block low wall in front of our home that was put up three years ago by our previous landscaper who's crew apparently did not know what they were doing. This spring I could rock the whole wall with my foot. I called A1 and said, "Can you fix this?" They came out and looked and said, "We can, whoever built this was not trained in the proper way to lay these types of blocks." A few weeks later a crew from A1 showed up, tore the wall apart, redug a proper footing, and relaid the stones. Highly recommend A1 if you want it done right the first time

I wish I could write a full review of the work, but they did not actually perform any work. The estimator came out a day early (I worked with the scheduler to schedule a day I'd be at home, they came a day I was not), so I couldn't walk through with them to specify exactly what I was looking for and had to talk to them through my Ring Camera. The estimate was very quick, they got it to me within a couple of hours, which was nice. However, I think based on the fact I couldn't be there to describe exactly what I was looking for, it was a bit high, which was fine, but it also meant I could only afford to do the work on the fence rather than everything else I wanted to do as well.

When I talked to both the scheduler and the estimator, I said I needed the cost of materials and cost of labor separated out on the estimate, as this was part of an insurance claim for the fence. That did not happen. When I called to have the quote redone, I was told the estimator would call me back. I called back a week later and nothing. This was about a month ago.

Best laid plans being what they are, we hit a snag in the execution. Thank you, Ted, for making it right ; and to your guys for the very professional work and amazing clean up afterwards. Our front yard looks terrific!
