We had old deck boards and railings replaced recently with composite boards and aluminum railings. The project was outstanding! Beyond our expectations! Highly recommend them!

Mike wanted to charge me twice as much as every other company for the same project. One of the first questions he asked me was if I had a husband! If I were a man, would he have asked me if I had a wife?! Not interested in working with his company!!

I asked Mike to price out materials and labor as other places were. He told me that didn't matter, the price was the price. I said it mattered to me and he said this, "when I go to the store do I ask for a breakout of the price and does it matter? He also said that doing so was unproductive for him and then said, sorry you don't understand. I was a little taken aback by his rudeness. I was new to the whole deck thing, so maybe I don't understand how things work. But to insult a potential customer you just met was very unprofessional I thought. Needless to say we went with a different company.

Mike has done two decks for me. He has a great team and I’m really happy with the quality of the work. Especially happy with my new deck now that I’m out sitting on it with the beautiful weather.

I called regarding a possible deck repair. Mike stopped by the same day and gave me several recommendations. He is incredibly knowledgeable, professional, and helpful. I will be calling him for all my future deck projects.

Thanks to Custom Home Specialties for adding a top-quality deck to my Eagan townhouse. We had to change the materials and the bid to satisfy the homeowner's association and Mike stuck with it. The project included replacing a window with a door and this part of the project was nicely done too, with quality framing and trim. The deck and door unit are big additions to my property!

I would highly recommend Mike Mortenson and his business Custom Home for installation of a manufactured deck. Mike and his crew tore down an old wood second-story deck and reinstalled a new enlarged deck, with stairs and arbor, in one week. Once Mike's crew begins your project, they stay on site until completion! Mike's crew was fantastic and took great pride in the final product. Shout-out to foreman Rick who came early and stayed late to get us a completed deck on time. Rick also has great carpentry skills which he used to tear out and replace some bad cedar siding to make sure that the deck and the siding it was attached to was in tip-top shape. I also appreciated Mike's engineering/design skills in taking a deck footprint that I wanted (part rectangle; part hexagon, and extending around a chimney) and creating the most cost-efficient design to accomplish my vision We LOVE all aspects of our new deck, from the great design to the fantastic installation. We spoke with Mike and he quickly came over the same day to discuss our project. One week later his crew was at our home to begin building our deck, and three days later it was complete!! We had a 12x12 deck built by Custom Home Specialties, Inc during late summer this year. Mike was great in tending our special needs such as an electrical line that had to be moved. His team was so skilled and quick with the build. Rick and his coworker had the deck built in one day, the stairs finished in another and a walkout created in a third. The quality of the materials seems to be wonderful as well. We adore out beautiful new deck!

We recently had two 12'x12' decks (upper and lower) with existing wood flooring
rails, and spindles removed and replaced with Timber Tech Azek PVC decking.
The work was done by Custom Home Specialties, Inc. under the direction of Mike Mortenson, owner of the company, who initially gave us the estimate of the job and managed and supervised the work.

To say that we were pleased with all aspects of the project would be an understatement. From obtaining the building permit to the delivery of the materials to the actual construction, everything went smoothly on time, and with first class results. Mike was responsive, kept us informed, and was excellent to work with.

This was as good an experience as one could possibly have, and we would not hesitate to use them again on other projects.

Mike and his team did a great job explaining price, process and products. He gave me different prices to reflect my needs and once I decided on what I wanted, his team finished everything in a timely fashion. I would highly recommend custom home specialties for any deck product!

The entire process was a fiasco. Mike and his team built our deck without checking the ledger board or apparently using a level. Our deck started to sag in the middle, and we called this team out to look at it. They did a quick fix which did not resolve the issue. We called Mike and had a brief discussion and he told us“I don’t know What to tell you”. He then hung up on us. We eventually got him to come back out. He had an attitude the entire time. His crew admitted to not checking the ledger board. Our deck is lower on one end and has several areas of buckling. MIke had nothing but excuses. One of his team members offered a solution. They worked on it and left without asking for feedback. Mike never followed up. The deck is still not perfect and has several areas of buckling. We are not satisfied and Mik doesn’t care. They built our deck wrong and he made us the customer feel like the bad people. His crew also took the dirt from the footings and threw it under our arborvitae bushes . I had to dig it all out by hand. There are a lot of deck builders research. I wish we had.

we accepted the quote the installer came out and got the job done in one Day! it looks Great! the Craftsmanship was perfect I am very happy with my new Landing everyone was very personable and easy to deal with.I would Reccomend Custom Home specialties to anyone who is looking to replace our build a new Deck

At the beginning of the 2022 we hired a contractor through Angi to design and build our deck beginning in April. Unfortunately, by July nothing was done. We canceled and started scrambling for someone to help us replace our unsafe deck with a new baby on the way. After 4 other estimates, Mike immediately stood out with a straight-up, direct and honest approach. My requested design and estimate came back in less than 24 hours even with some unique stair challenges. They over-delivered with a faster completion time combined with quality craftsmanship. The best part was he was local and came out regularly to make sure things were going well (either myself or his team). Highly recommended!
