Deck Builder reviews across the US
-
We met up with Adam (owner) sometime in late May 2022. I was interested in replacing our old wooden 10x10 deck with a new 12x12 with a 4x4 upper stair landing composite deck. We were quoted $15,431, which was pretty much in line with what most other deck builders in the area had quoted us. On May 31st, I emailed Adam to let him know we wanted to hire his company for the project. He accepted and said he'd put us on the schedule. There was no exact date, but were looking at November. On July 21st, I got an email from Adam, stating he was going to pass on doing our deck unless I got the permit myself. He said he was too far behind schedule to run downtown Madison for one permit on a "small deck".
We never signed a contract, but we verbally agreed on the project. To us, Adam demonstrated a complete lack of professionalism, his word is no good. -
Adam did a great job replacing our 20 y/o wood deck. He offered a number of options that enhanced the design. We are very happy with the quality of the deck and the communication. Adam built the deck ahead of schedule and on budget.

I can’t say enough about how great Decksperts was to work with from bid to project completion. They communicated well throughout the process and did exceptional quality work. Our deck was completed ahead of their anticipated date and they followed up to make sure we were happy with the end result. They even spent significant time trying to figure out an electrical issue that it turns out they didn’t cause. They were the least expensive bid we received but I am glad I didn’t let that worry me. They know what they are doing and do it very well.

Adam was the consummate professional. He listened to our ideas and made suggestions that ended up giving us a deck that was better than our original design idea. When building began, his crew was on-time and professional. Even during inclement weather, they would find any dry time to come out and work on the job. Neighbors compliment the finished product all the time and we let them know that Decksperts is the place to go.

I’m not one to review many places, but Decksperts has earned a review with them trying to bait and switch me. I called several companies for an estimate, and chose Decksperts. They were booked out about 3 months (like most companies) which was perfectly fine. The week before my project was supposed to start, I get a call from the owner, I believe his name is Adam. He told me he “accidentally misquoted” the price of my project and it would now cost an extra $5,000.
He refused to honor his current price, and knows every company is booked out so that it’ll take months until I could find a new company to come and build my deck. Steer clear of this shady company.
The owner's reply to my review is a lie. He came out to my house, dropped off sample materials, etc and was there for an hour. Quite the business to try to refute a review on google with more lies. Best of luck to anyone that chooses to work with this company moving forward. A standup company would have admitted to their mistake, and honored the initial price quoted. Not cancel a week before the deck build, which caused me to have to delay my deck to get built into the spring. Terrible business. -
We own an older home with a deck that was badly deteriorated. Adam looked it over and knew more than we did about what a big project it would be. Adam‘a thoughtful comments gave us confidence in his abilities to install what we wanted at an affordable price. There were a few choices and upgrades that came up during the planning stage and Adam was helpful and explained our options. He was quick to solve problems and displayed a “can do” approach to all aspects of the demolition and installation.
I wish I could give Adam and his crew more than a 5! They worked cheerfully and diligently.
If you want a professional crew and great deck, call Decksperts -
Adams crew from Decksperts did an amazing job. Love the deck, the railing and lights. Can't wait for warmer weather!! Great job from removal to installation. Thank you!!

Adam did a complete tear down of my old wood deck and replaced it with a new composite deck. He was extremely helpful in helping me come up with colors and a design to compliment my house. Adam was professional, knowledgeable and easy to work with. I am very happy with my new deck!

We would highly recommend Decksperts. Adam was great to work! Communication was excellent throughout the whole process and he stayed on budget. Adam listened to what we wanted and helped us design our new deck. His employees were friendly, on time, and even worked on weekends and through a holiday. We were enjoying our new deck 2 weeks after the process started!

I got several deck estimates and Adam provided me with the most thorough information and explanations. He is obviously passionate about decks and it shows in his method and finished product. I also appreciated his advice in telling me not to change where my stairs were located because it was not necessary and doing so would be more money. Adam and his crew did a beautiful job at a very fair price, and they were amazingly fast. Left the site clean. I would recommend Decksperts without hesitation.

Adam from Decksperts helped us plan and design the perfect deck space for our family! We hired Decksperts to add a 20' deck behind the kitchen and a matching 24' one in the yard attached to our swimming pool. Both of these large projects were finished quickly with excellent attention to detail and strong craftsmanship. Adam gave us great advice about materials, costs, and options. His crew was friendly and efficient. Whenever I had a question, it was answered promptly and Adam always advised us what would work best for us, not necessarily recommending the most expensive option or most profitable for him. He went above and beyond our expectations to ensure our yard was cleaned up promptly and we feel comfortable walking barefoot near the pool immediately after the construction work was completed. We are 100% thrilled with these projects and recommend Decksperts to anybody who wants a high quality addition to their home!

Josh was wonderful. He answered all of our questions and our deck looks great. I appreciate his attention to detail and making sure that the deck was safe and well constructed. I would strongly recommend Josh for any future needs.

A great experience. We needed to replace our old wooden decks (a large one off the dining room and a small one off of our master bedroom) with new decks using composite material. Decksperts was an incredible value and I am so glad we chose them for this project. Adam and his Decksperts Team really hit it out of the ballpark from start to finish.
Communication was excellent. When I met with Adam for the first time I could tell that he is really into the whole process and craft of deck building. He was patient and we spent over and hour talking about different material options and things like why he uses helical piers. I was impressed with Adam's enthusiasm for the project. I felt like he actually WANTED the job.
His estimate was not the cheapest or the most expensive. It was easy to understand. It started with a base price. But also included the optional upgrades we had talked about, and what they would cost.
Adam was great at keeping us informed as the project progressed. It started and finished on schedule. I was impressed with how quickly it went. But I never felt like it was being rushed. They took their time, making sure everything was done correctly. When I asked questions, the answers I got were simple, straight, and to the point. I never felt like I was being talked down to.
Finally, the new decks are BEAUTIFUL! The suggestions Adam made for color and accents were on point. The lights are the icing on the cake and every time I look out the window at night I pause and smile.
I recommend Decksperts without hesitation. The value in materials and workmanship is real and in my opinion, unmatched. -
Adam who owns Decksperts was great to work with in planning our deck. He had great ideas that look wonderful now that it is complete. Kevin who worked on the deck was a professional and even fixed water damage caused by the old deck the former home owners built. Adam and Kevin were great to work with and we would highly recommend them for projects big and small. Good hardworking people.

Adam did a fantastic job on our deck! We are newish owners of a house that had a 10 year old wooden deck. That deck was rotting and becoming very unsafe. I was interested in having some sort of composite deck to have less maintenance. Having never done this before, Adam met with us for a couple of hours and gave us good ideas on how to design the new deck. He communicated well with any issues that came up and took care of a couple of minor issues after it was finished. He is hard-working, a perfectionist and builds quality decks. I am very happy with the finished product.

Decksperts was great to work with through the whole process. Great communication, the deck looks amazing! Well done! Highly recommend Decksperts.

We love our new deck by Decksperts. It's beautiful! All the staff were professional and showed up every day during the building process. We have already recommended them to our friends. Looking forward to spending many hours on our new deck. Thank you, Adam, Craig and staff.

Quality of work 5 Stars
Craftsmanship = 5 Stars
Customer Service = 3 Stars
Communication = 2 Stars
First let me say that Adam and his crew know what they are doing and they do great work. The issues I had were with the customer service, the communication, and the expectations of a finished product. When my deck was finished I had 4 concerns that I wanted to get addressed. 1. The railing gaps from one piece to another were significantly different and it was the first thing I noticed when I walked out my door. (picture #1). 2. There were chips on my brand new powder coated railing cap (picture #2) 3. There were black rubber mallet marks on my brand new railing that were not cleaned off. 4. The piece of material that goes under the sliding door was not a full piece and had a large gap in the middle which looked terrible. Adam did come out and address all of my concerns. My issue is how he treated me and responded to me when I brought these things to his attention.
Below you will see his exact comments to me through email.
"We can't make all the balusters be even by the posts. We don't get to place the balusters in any place we want. They have holes that they go in. We cut them so they are the same from the post on each side of a rail section. Of course I'll look it over but I highly doubt that there is anything that we can fix" "There is $75 in labor per stair rail. Would you like to do them and I take that price off?" "Every railing has balusters that have to go in a certain place. I've never had this questioned in 1200 decks and I dont really know how to explain it"
(It ended up being something they fixed and it looks great now)
"I didn't have a magic eraser on me. I guess i will make the drive up there to wipe them off and dab a touch up pen to the cap"
"In 16 years of building decks i haven't came across a customer with complaints like this"
"I made the 30 min drive to spend 30 seconds to wipe of that spot a touch up paint the cap I hope that is the end of your list of complaints"
I did not appreciate his tone or how he spoke to me when I asked him to address these concerns which is why his customer service rating is a 3. In my opinion he should have never left or told me the deck was completed until these things were addressed. It was surprising to me that he would expect his paying customers to clean up and fix paint chips on there own brand new deck they just bought.
In regards to the lack of communication here are my examples.
1. He never told me when the materials were going to show up at my house they just showed up.
2. He would tell me he will be here to work on the deck and now one would show up.
In closing if you are willing to look past these things he will do quality construction that is solid and sound. -
Great experience and final product! Craig and Adam were professional, results-oriented, fair, and we LOVE our low deck and built-in lighting they recommended and installed. Adam proactively worked well with our building inspector when a question arose. They even recommended some other contractors - who were also great - for additional work we were doing. Highly recommend.

Decksperts built very solid decks that should last a long time. I like the composite flooring and the metal railings. It beats the wooden decks we used to have. Great 👍 job.

Decksperts recently completed our deck and we absolutely love it! Adam and his team are very passionate about decking and it really shows in their work. If you do your research on composite and PVC decking, the quote for Deckperts comes in right where you would expect it to, and that price is true through your final payment. We had quotes with a few other companies that came in $5K - $15K over our budget all for similar or even lower quality materials on the frame.
After agreeing to work with Decksperts back in early May (which as an added bonus requires no money down), Adam gave us a ballpark start date of late July. Due to shipping delays in some color options for other customers and other contractors being behind on one of their new home decks, they were able to fit us in at the end of June. By noon on the first day they tore out our old deck and had helical piers driven. Overall, it took about 5 works days to complete with the demo, framing, surface, stairs, rails, and lights. During the build process there was one design mistake based on a miscommunication, but that was fixed the first thing the next day without issue. Sun Prairie is a little more strict on some of their building codes than other Dane County communities. The city engineer had them make an adjustment to a notched beam for a Sun Prairie specific requirement and they immediately had that addressed. Decksperts does everything right in their process.
When it comes to materials, color, and design, the Deckorators decking products are top notch and look beautiful. Their claim about increased traction is completely valid - there's no slipping even in flip flops during a downpour. The small added cost Adam offers for mitered/picture frame stairs is completely worth it and that detail really adds to the wow factor of the deck. We had trouble deciding between under-rail lights and post cap lights. Adam recommended the under-rail lights and we love them. They are both practical and provide an elegant glow which is exactly what we wanted. They use #1 kiln dried after treatment lumber for the frame and tape all seams to ensure a sturdy foundation for many years.
We have several friends in the area who recently purchased homes and we will definitely recommend them to Decksperts if they decide to do a deck project. It's unfortunate that there are a couple non-relevant 1-star reviews here. With so many decking companies in the area, the overall star rating can be the difference between getting a quote and not even looking further at a company. We almost didn't pursue Decksperts, but once we saw their portfolio on Facebook and their website they were obviously worthy of looking into. We're so happy we made the choice to work with Decksperts.
