The Malama Solar Team is by far the best on the island. The entire team showed up prior to the actual time we were told they would. Everyone was very friendly and introduced themselves to us. They worked very efficiently to get our solar system up and running. The team did an awesome job with the install and did a thorough clean up afterwards to ensure there were no wiring rubbish left behind. The Malama Solar Team brings the Aloha in everything they do! I highly recommend Malama Solar to anyone looking for a solid, quality team!

We were introduced to Malama Solar by a close friend in 2019. They have always been extremely easy to work with. They answer our calls if we need them, and they're prompt and professional. I especially want to give a shout-out to Cameron who did our meter upgrade. The installation took a lot longer than expected because of how our home was wired, but Cameron was a trooper and stayed at our house past dark. Thank you Cameron, and the whole Malama team for taking such good care of us!

We had tried for a year to work with another solar company but it was proving to be impossible to get the project started. We contacted Brandon to see what Malama had to offer. He was very straight forward and answered all our questions. We never felt like he was pressuring us to get more than we needed or force upgrades on us. We appreciated that he worked tirelessly to get a great price and to push our project through. At installation time, the Malama crew were efficient, respectful of our property and were very knowledgeable about the products and answered all our questions. Our calls with quesions or concerns are returned quickly. We are very impressed with our experience and with everyone we have been in contact with. We highly recommend Malama over any of the other companies in Hawaii, you will not be disappointed.

This is a solid company. The professionalism, workmanship and customer service is wonderful. The best part for me is, it's locally owned and locally managed. I'm all about supporting local companies. Justin walked me through the process during installation and made sure to answer any questions before leaving. Matt also jumped into the conversation to give me advice on how to save additional energy on my water heater and also checked and drained my heater ( a service not required but he wanted to help me anyways) Love that!! The crew was fantastic. My family was home during the two days of installation and they were very respectful of our space and time. I feel really good about choosing Malama Solar after checking ALL the companies out there. Communication was first and foremost in the process, I knew every step of the process from signing the contract to installation and beyond. Most companies are focused on just getting the solar on your roof and not following up on maintenance and communication. Look no further. Malama Solar is No Ka Oi.

Working with Malama Solar was a breeze. Jay and his team were professional, knowledgeable and super helpful. They communicated with me the entire time on what was going to happen, what they needed to do and did an all around great job! It was fast and efficient, everything looks great!!! Matt, who is a part of the team went above and beyond when he saw that our water solar panels were in really bad shape and how dangerous it potentially was. Then he went as far as to check out our hot water system, with his past expertise in the area, he was able to tell me the problem and even give me options on what we could do to fix. On top of it all, he is saving us money on our water bill that we didn't realize we were paying. I would recommend Malama Solar to anyone looking to install or upgrade. We decided to go Solar to combat the rising electricity costs. We shopped around and landed on Malama Solar. Our experience has been great from the beginning. All our questions and concerns were addressed timely and completely. From Brandon and his sales process to Vivienne coordinating all the paperwork/permit/scheduling process to Christopher and his team managed by Diedrick through installation process were all top notch. Open and transparent communication throughout the process and excellent customer service experience, the team went above and beyond.

We love our solar panels and the Tesla Powerwall. The price was good, and the service was great. Our HOA had strict requirements, but the Malama team made permitting a breeze.

We just had our system installed from Malama, the process was simple, they got all the permits for us and were very happy. Pat, the electrician, and his team left our house clean.

Previous owner of my house I purchased here in Kailua spent $66,000 for a solar system that's in my opinion probably worth max $25,000 installed. Even then these guys are overpriced and unresponsive - I emailed multiple times to ask to get our electricity permissioned with hawaii electric so that we can sell back, they are ignoring. I was going to buy another powerwall thru them but now i'm not. AVOID at ALL COSTS! You can get probably 50% the price or more elsewhere.

I had a great expirience with Malama and the team. They definitely exceeded all my expectations period they did all the roof inspections. They handled all the permits they showed up on time, they did the installation in 1 day and it was all a great experience. Very clean and proffesional. Definitely recommend them for your next solar install VS all these other guys that are coming to your door.

I encourage everyone to read my ENTIRE review BEFORE you decide to go with Malama Solar for your Solar needs. Then you can decide. This review gives a lot of detail but in short, Malama Solar states that they are committed to helping the local customer stating “Malama is to care for” and they are “The Hawaiian solar company with local crew members and local priorities in mind.” I share my personal experience so far and you can decide if Malama Solar is the right contractor for you to meet your needs. I have reached out to Malama for support and in our first year, our system has had 8 system shutdowns of 103 days. Malama has provided us little to no support since system approval in April 2024.

This is my first negative review on a company but feel compelled to let everyone know my personal experience with Malama Solar, and their primary contractor of choice, Sunnova. The reason we chose to go with Malama Solar was because they are a local company who we felt would assist us during our entire solar experience. We were mistaken in our assumption. During our year and a half of solar ownership, we have been very, very dissatisfied! Our system was installed by Malama Solar on 24 Feb 2024 and we received HECO approval on 4 Apr 2024. I paid $39,400 upfront for the entire system in Feb 2024. Our system went down on 6 Apr 2024, the second day of system operation. I called Malama Solar to assist and was brushed off and told to call Sunnova (a mainland company) for all subsequent service needs. I did and my system was repaired on 20 Apr 2024. My system experienced a second shutdown on 10 May 2024. I called Sunnova and the system was repaired on 24 May 2024. I reached out to Malama Solar on 10 Jun 2024 and expressed our concerns about the poor system performance. The President of Malama Solar, Chris Sue, returned my call the same day and wanted to hear about my experience and provided me his personal contact number in case I had any other issues in the future as he said he was deeply concerned. Following is a short of my experiences since then:

I personally reached out to Chris Ah Sue on 17 Mar 25 to ask for his personal assistance that he promised me. The next day, I received a call from Mike of Malama Solar and not Chris himself. I gave Mike a full rundown of the system operation from the very first day and he told me that Malama Solar has NOTHING to do with service calls and I had to go through Sunnova. I pleaded with him to help us and as I am a local resident needing support on a system Malama Solar installed. He said there was very little they could do! I asked him about their commitment to helping the local community with our solar needs. Mike said that by contract, they can’t help get our system back up and running properly. But he could send an email to Sunnova. Well, today is 10 Sep 2025 and the only support I have received from Malama was they sent a couple emails to Sunnova and haven’t heard back from them! (Update: Mike of Malama called me two weeks ago and reported they are waiting for parts). I have personally called Sunnova four times in the past two months for an update on my service request and was told each time that someone would return my call. Nothing.

In Oct 2024, I asked Sunnova for reconciliation of costs I incurred since my system was not functioning for a duration up to that time. Sunnova replied that they will reconcile after one full year of ownership. I called Sunnova in April 2025 (after one full year of ownership) asking for reconciliation and was then told that my system reconciliation would be done after three years of ownership! I am not sure why the change from one to three years!

Completely disappointed with this solar company in Honolulu. I paid $39,000 for a mid-size system and two batteries, and it’s been nothing but headaches. Installation was delayed for months, communication was terrible, and now that the system’s finally running, one of the batteries keeps showing errors. Tried calling customer service no one answers or calls back. I’ve had to hire a third-party electrician just to diagnose issues they should’ve handled. Overpriced, unreliable, and unprofessional. There are way better companies out there with better support and pricing.

My solar panel project started with obtaining quotes from different companies. Mālama Solar, from the very start, had a great price point, well under any other company.
Malama has been a pleasure to
work with. My project required a few pauses because of issues beyond my control: Olia, Jolene and Jennifer in the front end were more than patient and always responsive to all of my issues. Designs, permits and HECO applications were taken care of in quick succession, leaving me with nothing to do but Docusign. Site inspections were not as easy as I’m not on island but they eventually were arranged and all details taken care of. Installation was made difficult because of the weather but Gabe and his whole crew were very reliable and professional. All twenty nine panels were installed without any problems in a two day period. Stella and Jimmy were helpful during the install and post- install period. Always answering the phone and problem solving even if they didn’t know the answers at that moment in time.
I would highly recommend Malama Solar to any person looking to install solar panels on their home. This is an excellent business.
