HVAC reviews in St Paul, Minnesota

*UPDATE* Nobody from the company contacted me to follow up on this review - This company canceled on me 20 minutes before my 4 hour long window was about to close then told me they are booked for the next month. My friend had the same thing happen to him a while back, but I thought it was a fluke. I took off from work to be home for my appointment. When I asked to speak to a manager I was told they were all busy. No offers, no effort, very unhelpful person on the other end of the call trying to make the situation right. Go anywhere else if you want someone to show up.

Prompt, excellent service at a reasonable price. They also fixed a water pressure issue after replacing a valve. Richard and Kyle were very nice, thorough, and service oriented.

Calling and getting a service center who would not put me through to the office had be beyond frustrated. After using an old contact number, Beth called me and sent Josh out the same day for service. Josh was pleasant, Knowledgeable and honest. All traits I saw in Matt when Matt first owned the company. That one visit with Matt is why I have been calling McQuillan brothers all these years. Josh is very much like him. Honest, went above and beyond and very knowledgeable. Josh is a keeper

The electrition did a great job installing custom old pendant lights in an old home and under difficult work comditions. Thank you!

Unfortunately I spend $44k redoing all the electrical and pluming, installing new boiler and new mini splits in my house only to have nothing but problems a few years later with the boiler not working lights flickering. Customer service is terrible. I call them the work is under warranty but only if a McQuillan person comes out which they are always booked several days out. Unfortunately when its cold out I cannot wait several days for someone to come out and fix the boiler so my house has heat. I already had one pipe freeze from this happening. I paid a premium to go with a reputable company only to have bad service. I should have gone with a cheaper company since their warranty is crap.

Did a good job installing pressure reducing valve and expansion tank at less cost than the mythological mountaineer. I'd consider using them again. Unfortunately worker left my water heater to pilot so I was without hot water for the weekend and couldn't figure it out. While it was mostly my fault for not figuring it out it would have been nice for them to leave with things in complete working condition.

Kyle is a gem on the McQuillan team! He was helpful, kind, and thorough in explaining what he was doing and why. He worked quickly and cleanly to resolve the issue. For any future plumbing needs we’ll be reaching out to McQuillan to ask for his assistance. Great work!

15K THERMOSTAT. I called for service and explained what my issue was believing that the thermostat was the issue, their technician came out. Replaced the thermostat then claimed that I needed to replace my entire furnace. I followed the recommendation only to find out when testing the new furnace that the thermostat that was replaced was wired wrong. The install team was great, professional, knowledgeable… but their service technicians apparently don’t know basics and will tell you you need a new furnace. Learn from my mistake.

Discovered a leak in some pipe that a prior owner saw fit to duct tape instead of deal with properly. Called McQuillan, and Lucas L. came out. He was incredibly professional and gave me a range of options to solve the issue. Appreciated his expertise in assessing the home's plumbing, his ability to find a solution that worked with my budget, and his professionalism. Job took a couple hours, and he highlighted what he expects my next steps are going to be.

UPDATE: It’s unfortunate that, after reading this review, the company thinks I’m just unhappy with the visit from two years ago. That is true, but I am even more unhappy with the most recent visit.
Their dismissive reply to my review is trying to make you think I’m complaining about something from two years ago. I’m not. If that were the case, I would’ve written this review two years ago.
McQuillan Home Services earns points for professionalism in appearance, but let’s be honest: they seem far more interested in padding invoices than fixing the actual problem.
Two years ago, they replaced a cartridge in my downstairs shower for $611.46. When that same shower started dripping again, I did some homeowner triage: disassembled the faucet, soaked the cartridge, seats, and springs in vinegar (hard water is our reality), and realized there was one last piece—the plastic piece that holds the seats and springs —that I couldn’t get out. That’s literally the job I called them for.
Instead of pulling out the right plumbing tool and removing the plastic piece, they went straight for the scare tactics. “Your water’s too hard! Your water pressure is too high!” (Yes, 90 psi is high, but not the crisis they made it out to be.) Then came the sales pitch. They sat me down at the table with their iPad and rolled out options ranging from nearly $12,000 down to just under $2,000. Their “basic” option, using a part I already owned, was $1,902. That’s not service; that’s theater.
To add insult to injury, when they put everything back together, they managed to reverse the hot and cold lines. They didn’t even test their own work. Later that night, I grabbed a pliers, popped out that stubborn plastic piece, scrubbed the valve body with vinegar, and installed a new cartridge—this time a generic version for about $40. Delta’s own part was $85, so yes, I saved twice: once by avoiding McQuillan’s highway robbery prices, and again by skipping the “official” part markup. The repair took me 20 minutes, mostly done while chatting with a friend on the phone. And guess what? No more drip.
McQuillan is professional, sure—but professional upsellers. If you want to pay thousands for what should be a simple cartridge swap, by all means call them. Personally, I’d be happy to fix your drippy faucet for the cost of the part and a six-pack of beer. At least then you’ll know someone actually tested the hot and cold before leaving. -
Wore his salty muddy boots all over our floors. We had an event that night and had to re clean the whole level. Did not replace the furnace filter which we were assured he would do because they say all parts are in the truck. Didn’t have a solution for our issue. Left the house 79° all day. We called the next day to ask to be refunded the $69 due to the poor service and were told a manager would call us back and nothing happened. Truly Awful.

Justin was very professional and courteous during his visit. He quickly diagnosed the issue with my furnace — the thermocouple had gone out — and got everything running smoothly again. He explained what happened in clear terms and made sure the system was working properly before leaving. Excellent service and great experience overall. Highly recommend Justin and McQuillan Home Services!

I had a tripped breaker, caused by a couple of incorrectly installed light switches. I noticed right away in the morning that I had a problem, and they were able to get there only a few hours later. They swiftly diagnosed the issue and were able to fix it right then and there. They identified the faulty switches that caused the trip and sorted it all out for me. It was reasonably priced too, for the time it took and considering what electrical normally costs. Highly recommend!

Everything was great except for the fact that I called you guys out here to get an estimate. He said he would tell me the price before he leaves and then he just left so I don’t know how you guys work, but I’d like to know the price of what it was gonna cost.

Warranty work, hot water tank only 3 1/2 yrs old, Not McQuillian fault. Flooding happened after hours.
Phone consultant could have been more helpful.
Told me to shut off the water to the house. Not a good plan in below zero weather. ( No emergency service available in the evening or night ) First service call at 8 am. Ron was great! -
Scheduled an appointment for 12 to 4pm. Confirmed by text the day before. Took half the day off of work to be sure someone was home. Received a call at 2:27pm to inform me that the technician would arrive in 30 -45 minutes. About an hour later I received a call saying there was a dispatch error and they would need to reschedule for tomorrow. Not possible. We planned our day around this and took time off of work for nothing. Will be going with someone more responsible.

Ron gave me a few honest estimates to choose from, and was very knowledgeable about all the details involved. I felt cared for and received an education on an important part of caring for our home that I didn’t realize. I’ll be sure to reach out to McQuillan home service again in the future!

I specifically asked for service on my gas fireplace which is not lighting. The repairman Kordan was very nice but doesn’t work in gas fireplaces. He determined this was not an electrical issue but I had to stay home from work for 2.5 hours and pay for no repair. He said he would have them call to send another repairman and then I got a text saying they could not do the work. I would like to request a full refund.

I had a clogged kitchen drain. Not only clogged but frozen, (our heat went out during a really bad cold snap.) He removed the clogged and run hot water through the system to remove the ice build up. Im glad I called, I didnt realize the drain froze!
The tech was great! A professional who knew what he was doing.
A little expensive, I paid over $400 for the service but the job was done completed to my satisfaction.
Thank you!! -
We’ve been with McQuillan Brothers for 8 years now. Always very happy with the service. Today we had our furnace inspected (free with the membership) and the flame sensor cleaned. Jed was super friendly and professional. He told us what we should consider having done next to keep the furnace up and running and we scheduled our water heater inspection (which is also free once a year with their membership).

In the process of getting several different quotes, I had McQuillan Home Services come over to quote a replacement of an electric water heater and a conversion to a gas, tankless water heating system.
We live in small home located in, what I’d call, a fairly simple low-middle class neighborhood and after doing my research and taking into account the insane rise in prices and this galloping inflation we’re all subjected to, I was, more or less, educated as to what I expected to pay for this job. I was wrong …
They sent over a licensed plumber (as per his description). The technology and installation/routing of pipes has changed and vastly improved in the last decade with the introduction of PEX and crimping systems, instead of using solder. It saves a lot of time and money and one would think, it should be more affordable or at least, in the ballpark of financial decency, for the homeowner. I was wrong …
The quote I was given for a tankless water system install with all the other work involved (conversion to gas and running a straight shot of about 15-20 ft of PEX across to the other side of the basement using an easy to access basement ceiling) was 14k. I asked the guy if the quote came with little Lego pieces and my having to kneel on it during and after installation?! I said “how much do you people charge per hour -- 1000 dollars/hr?!”. Then came the “negotiation” techniques which I had already been subjected to in the last 2 years due to different projects we did around the house. They're all, other than a one guy with a van LLC, trained using the same “negotiation techniques” manual. Then the guilt-tripping texts and email messages started — “I have ## of union plumbers on my team and I need to keep them busy! What would it take to win your business?!”. I don’t know …. conservatively 250 USD x10 hours= 2500 USD plus another 2000 USD for the water heating unit and parts?!!
Completely disappointed, I figured I’d cover all my options so we talked about different water heating systems installs including what I currently had (electric). A simple replacement of the existing electric water heating tank and just re-connecting the existing piping, for example, was close to 10k. Unreal!
I think my body language and my stupefied look on my face gave it all away so we finished the conversation rather quickly but not before (they all finish the same!) he pitched his last “financing at 0%” offer! If anyone from the company reads this, know that we have a problem in this country where people have been reduced close to financial slavery because of these usury prone “financing schemes” … even at “zero percentage interest”. There’s no such a thing as “zero percent” but people are largely financially stretched or desperate and the overall culture is one where these despotic schemes are allowed to exist and be foisted on honest and hard working people like those living in this house! Only that it would take a vat of chloroform to make me fall for these usurious bs offers!
I had my tankless system put in eventually, the relocation of the unit and conversion to gas PLUS some extra piping work (removal of a large section of old galvanized pipe and replacement with copper piping) at a fraction of what these people quoted me! All done by a ONE (and a helper) licensed and insured master plumber who showed up, on time, with a large truck filled with everything he needed for a job well done! With a little patience and looking for that one plumber with a truck who looks for work and loves what he does, anyone can too, get a job like this done without having to go through such painful process and without such financial burden!
BTW, the plumber I hired for this job, quoted me over the phone after I sent him a video describing what I wanted done and the extra few things that we had to do, were priced on site justly and fairly, the day we installed everything. That’s how you treat a customer! That’s how you keep a customer coming back to you for more business! The job was done perfectly and came with a one year warranty.
