We just had our ducts cleaned for the second time by Essential Air. Not only are they consistently on-time, they move through the house efficiently and thoroughly which I appreciate because it does not impact the house for long. We have two dogs that have to be put away for jobs like these and Essential Air does the job so quickly that the dogs barely even notice and the house is left smelling great and the air quality is phenomenal!

We had a furnace fire in the dead of winter. Essential Air was super helpful in making quick arrangements to get a crew out and clean our ducts before the new furnace was installed on very short notice. The crew that came was very professional and courteous, and they did a great job. I highly recommend them.

I had a difficult time finding someone to fix two leaking chimneys for a reasonable rate. Thankfully, this search led me to call Karl.

New owners to our current house. Previous owners burned wood in the fireplace for years and we are unsure if we need to have it swept. We just put in a ventless insert. The house was built in 1920. I called to speak with this company to better understand what we need to do. The woman I spoke with could have not been more rude, short and unhelpful. Of course I am not a expert in chimneys, and is why I supplied her with the information that I had. She told me that there was absolutely no way for her to know what type of work they would have to do and that I need to do more research before they can help! Very disappointing as I had read good reviews of this local company.

Came out over a month ago and still haven't received a quote after numerous follow-up calls. Very personable, but they had better things to do.

As a licensed professional engineer with over 30 years of experience, I can't help myself in being attentive to detail. Karl and his masons are truly top tier. They expertly repaired my home's mid century fireplace through extensive tuck-pointing and reconstruction of the cap. They matched the type and color of the original mortar to the point of not being able to see their repair work. Amazing job!

I called and they were able to schedule my chimney cleaning within the week. The technicians they sent out were clean, polite, and friendly.
They got right to work, and they had it looking good in less than an hour.
They put drop cloths down, and had a HEPA vacuum, and there was not a bit of a mess either during their work or after.
Definitely recommend, and will use them again.

Karl Mattes has gone above and beyond!!After inquiring about gas logs at Karl Mattes Company, I received a phone call the very next morning saying Mr. Mattes would like to come out and take a look at the inside of our fireplace to make sure we order the correct size logs and burner! In addition, he walked me thru how to use the gas starter that we have inside the fireplace!! Mr. Mattes is so knowledgeable on all types of fireplaces!! I cannot say enough about the customer service I received today !!! We are very lucky to have such a reputable, family-owned business right here in Madeira, Ohio! There was another occasion that Karl Mattes did work at our home and a gas line needed to be found in our garage wall. He worked tirelessly until it was found. If you are in need of any fireplace work or needing a chimney sweep, look no further…Karl Mattes is truly the best!!!

Karl Mattes and his company were excellent, professional, and delivered excellent quality work with high craftsmanship. They rebuilt my fireplace, parged smoke chamber, lined flue, and capped chimney on a 110 year old Craftsman house. Very reasonable and great detailed explanation of procedures and requirements.

I had heard great things about this company, great ratings and close to us. I called to ask for an estimate for two things: cost to remove and cost to repair our chimney. I talked with Karl himself - super nice and upbeat. He said he would stop by the next week early. Three weeks later I called to check the progress since we hadn’t heard anything. A woman answered and chided and grilled me on who I had talked to saying that unless I had talked to her she would have no way to ensure it would get done. I held on and politely answered her questions since perhaps she was having a bad day. We then received an estimate in the mail - but only for removing the chimney. I called again to ask if our original request to include repairing it would be available. The same woman answered - just as curt and short but I went with it believing she must just be efficient since was a five star company. It was very clear I was inconveniencing her. Now I have continued to call about every three weeks to check whether the estimate may happen. Yesterday was my last call. The same lady who answered now told me ‘well maybe that is his recommendation so that is the only estimate he provided’. I said ‘it has been weeks of me asking and that was not ever made clear especially when he said he’d provide both- how were we to know this’. She said she would remind him. After this I have now talked to two other well-rated companies who are very responsive and who have said absolutely it is our choice as homeowners to have our chimney repaired or taken down. I don’t know what is happening at Karl Mattes but it has been excruciating. I don’t feel confident they would ever get to doing the actual work - or do what we’d asked. I sadly now would not recommend this company after so many good reviews. I wish I could talk to Karl and let him know our experience. I hope he is ok.
