I called regarding my fireplace damper not working, it looked to me that the linkage was broken, I called to arrange a service call, the next afternoon Igor arrived and inspected damper, after a few minutes he determined that the mechanism was froze up and stuck, he grabbed a hold of the linkage vigorously worked it back and forth and then turned and said ok now what next. I was impressed with his approach no nonsense got right to the issue.
We also wanted roof directional wind caps installed, he went onto the
roof and did an inspection of the chimney, when he came down, he showed us pictures of the chimney condition which showed damaged flashing and cracks in the crown coating, also both chimneys need sweeping and cleaning.
He worked up an estimate and we agreed on the price. two days later he had a crew at the house to start the work, they did a great job of sweeping chimneys, no mess cleaned up afterwards and completed all of the exterior work the same day.
We now have two functioning fireplaces complete with directional wind caps. Totally satisfied.

I was very impressed with Family Chimney Repair from estimate to clean up. David asked questions to help decide what should be done and gave several options. I received the estimate swiftly and was able to book the rebuild and reflashing for a short week later.

Igor and his coworker arrived promptly on the scheduled day and they carefully set up scaffolding and tarps. The completed chimney looks great and it was completed in less than the planned 2 days. They cleaned up all the demo debris very well and returned to install a custom made chimney cap.

There was some confusion with the initial estimate regarding which chimney needed work (we have two different stacks), but Igor honored the original quoted price even though the estimate was based on the incorrect chimney.

Our stone chimney was in need of repair and Igor did a terrific job of dismantling, cleaning the stones, and then rebuilding it with an appropriate concrete cap. Fantastic service from Family Chimney Repair. I had difficulty with some of the other shops responding but they were very responsive here. I had them sweep chimney, demolish an old firebox and build a new one. The work is clean and very well executed.

Super fast response and excellent bid process. Very nice. Ended up being able to do the job two days early. Great communication, no surprises on the bill, would def recommend. The last photo is the dreaded “before” photo.

The Family Chimney repair crew did a great job rebuilding my chimney from the roof up.
They were courteous and professional, and had a fair price. They were great about addressing any concerns I had. I recommend them to anyone with chimney issues.

Working with Family Chimney Repair was seamless. Igor got us on the schedule within a week of our initial inquiry and provided a few different options to fix or replace the existing structure. Given that our newly purchased home was built in the 1920s, and the original chimney had already been repaired multiple times, we opted to have it torn down and rebuilt. Igor and the team completed the demo, rebuild (incl. flashing, crown, rain cap, flue liner installation, and water repellent), as well as a general chimney sweep from Thursday - Monday. It was a very quick turnaround for such a large job. They also provided a few different options for the chimney cap to ensure the final look matched what we were after.

Pictures attached below show the original structure (photo 1) and the rebuild completed by the team (photos 2-4). Thank you Family Chimney for your care, communication, and attention to detail. We feel much more confident heading into the rainy season.

This review will be semi-lengthy, given the unique circumstance. Please read in full to get whole picture of rating. I want to be fair to the owners, so I first review the quoting process and second the work. The first is what was the most frustrating.

QUOTING.
We were placing a bid on a house & the inspection returned issues relating to tuck-pointing on TWO chimneys (img 3-5). We called around for quotes, and fortunately Family Chimney had an immediate opening for a quote. The crew came out, took a look at the two chimneys. On the day of the quote, David was helpful; he talked us through the issues and showed us images covering the problems for both chimneys. Some things from their quote aligned w/ what roofers and inspector highlighted,
but some new things. Which was helpful! We received a quote promptly and so we were able to use this in our negotiation for the home offer/purchase given issues with these two chimneys. The owners had a previous quote but Family Chimney appeared* more affordable. We ended up closing on the house and so now had two chimneys to fix. Out of respect to companies that gave us quotes on the things we used in the negotiation, we scheduled to get the tuckpointing down for the two chimneys that needed it, which David discussed with us.
A couple days prior to the work, we decided one of the chimneys (smaller one) would be removed below roof line by the roofing company as there was it was being used to vent a very small pipe for the water heater. We reached out to Family Chimney and spoke to Igor. He took our questions but noted that our *quote was never for the two chimneys… it was for a one chimney, even though we had asked a quote for both. This was frustrating because we used the quoted price to negotiate on the sale price.
We spoke to Igor during this time about the quoting error and he tried to be flexible/helpful. However, it did come off a little as if the misquote was somehow an inconvenience in scheduling to them... Which was a bit unfair. I was under the impression I got a quote for two chimneys that I had requested—I’m not all that familiar with chimney repair quotes after all. Anyhow, Igor worked with us to reach a semi-okay compromise. It wasn’t great but I just wanted to get the job done at that point. Fortunately, the smaller chimney was demo’d so we weren’t out a lot more money. However, if it wasn’t demo’d the misquote may have cost us an extra $1200-$1500…

LABOR/MASONRY.
Igor was very communicative and the work was completed on schedule. The flashing & tuckpointing was completed on the main chimney. The mason left some splatter on the siding of the house, but after I contacted Igor he had someone out to clean it promptly, which my wife appreciated. So far, the chimney and flashing are holding up well during the rainy season. Prior to this work, you could see day light through some of the mortar. Now everything is sealed, which is awesome!

In general, the people doing the quotes and those writing the quote/doing the work need better communication. This could have been avoid and I would have been pretty satisfied. It should not be the customers problem if there is an internal lapse in communication.

After my review, David reached out to learn about the error in the quoting process. He contextualized where the issue may have arose, apologized(!) that it happened, & said they are updating their system to be more diligent in the process. I appreciate their commitment to doing better and after the fact updated my review from 3-stars to 4-stars.
