For several years we dealt with an intermittent problem with our furnace where it would cycle off before reaching the thermostat set point. The diagnosis by another HVAC company was that we had a cracked core and needed a whole new furnace. Before taking that step, I asked a local builder who he thought was the best HVAC guy in the Gorge and he told me Terry McDowell. He was right!

Terry found an incredibly difficult-to-diagnose vacuum problem related to the way the system was originally installed. His persistence and smarts saved me thousands of dollars.

Terry is sharp, honest, and professional. I'll never call anyone else for HVAC work.

They installed an undersized system in my house and did a bunch of service calls with no change. I happened to see a $1000 rebate from energy trust and needed to tell them I wanted it rather than them just doing it. They finally conceded that the system they sold me was undersized and came back and removed the old one and installed a new one which I appreciate. Once the new one was in my led lights began flickering. Now they will not return my email or texts and leave me to pay an electrician to troubleshoot the issue.

Terry and Melissa go the extra mile! Terry and his crew accommodated our schedule for installation and coordinated with the electrician to make the process seamless. Melissa followed up multiple times to make sure our tax rebate was processed and received. These guys know their stuff and take great care of their customers!

My experience with McDowell & Son was “Five Star.” I would recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat. Responsible. Reliable. Respectful. BACKGROUND: I had previously contacted the area’s biggest / most well-known Heating and Cooling company for service due to a problem with our “very low mileage” HVAC—had to wait two weeks before a technician was available. It was discovered that mice had nested in the outdoor unit and chewed wiring in the control unit, and the damage was “extensive.” I was advised to replace the outdoor unit rather than attempt a repair. I waited weeks for an estimate. The recommendation then escalated to replacement of the ENTIRE system (indoor and outdoor units) for a whopping $20,000—otherwise “AHRI compatibility could not be guaranteed.” ?!?!?! At that point, I contacted McDowell & Son for a second opinion. They were able to send out a service tech the same day (just lucky timing). The service-person, albeit young, was knowledgeable beyond his years—a real problem solver—who carried out a *very* thorough inspection and diagnostics. Later the same day, I was actually able to speak with Terry, the owner of McDowell & Son, and a repair plan was formulated. On the second service call, after several hours with a soldering iron and a dust brush, the unit was up and running—GOOD.AS.NEW. Lesson learned: caveat emptor (buyer beware). HVAC companies differ (widely) in service levels and approaches to sales and customer care. Contacting McDowell & Son was one of the best decisions I’ve made. As I said, I would recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat. They’ve certainly earned my trust and respect.

McDowell & Sons are a great team to work with. They went above and beyond to walk us through the various heating/cooling options that would meet our needs while also being clear on the costs associated. All the while with knowledge and patience.

We recently had an odd noise coming from our heat pump, so we called McDowell & Son to take a look. Ryan arrived even a few minutes early and got right to it. He thoroughly inspected it and educated me on how a heat pump works, and why the odd noise is occurring and that it is part of the normal functioning of the unit in cold weather. I appreciated the prompt, friendly service, but was most impressed by the opportunity to learn how the unit is supposed to work and that Ryan took the time to explain it well.

We had a great experience with McDowell & Son. They were very efficient in performing the maintenance work on our two H/AC systems. In addition, they laid out our options for replacing our systems when the time cme, in a very courteous and comprehensive manner. We definitely recommend that you give them a call if you need help with your H/AC system.

We highly recommend McDowell & Son for any of your heating and air conditioning needs! We've used them several times for both our air installations and repairs and have always been so happy with their work honesty. When we call for anything someone always gets right back to us or comes over to address whatever need it is we have. Also, they issued us the papers completely filled out for the tax credit we needed on our new air conditioning system..that was a huge plus!!

Dec. 23 2022 as the whole country is experiencing an epic cold storm.
I had done all the trouble shoot steps to no avail. I called McDowell and Sons for help. They fixed our furnace two years ago and did a great job.
An actual person answered and took down my number and situation. Less than 15 minutes later Tom called me back and he walked me through my steps of trouble shooting and then he had me try other steps. Within 5 minutes over the phone we got the furnace going again. Yes, it was a frozen line inside the furnace on the ignition fail safes.

Marco from McDowell & Sons was wonderful! Friendly, efficient, knowledgeable, and all around professional. He fixed a challenging rupture in our condensate line, and even though it was in a tough spot to work on, he made it look easy and was done in a flash. We look forward to having our minisplit system serviced by McDowell & Son in the future.

We have been so pleased with McDowell & Son Heating and Air Conditioning. We have a Mitsubishi mini-split Ductless system and have been more than pleased. Service has been amazing and everyone that we have dealt with has been pleasant and knowledgeable. I would recommend their sales and service team to anyone looking to upgrade.

McDowell & Son were the ONLY company to even respond when I called. To this day, the other three I contacted have not bothered to return my call! The heat pump went out 1 week ago. A tech showed up today to diagnose...He showed up on time, had the parts to repair the unit, do a complete service, and left it working better than before! The level of professionalism, courtesy, and service is remarkable in this day and age. I highly recommend them and will be using them again if needed.

We were very pleased with our experience. Terry and Melissa responded quickly and professionally to our request for an AC installation. I know they are very busy but they made sure we had everything working (coordinating the electrician team as well as their team) and it was all up and running in time for our worst heat wave ever. Terry gave us options and explained our choices and pricing. Very transparent. Installation team was friendly, professional, respectful. I felt fine leaving the house to go to work, trusting them at my home. I’d highly recommend them!

We have had a wonderful experience with McDowell & Son Heating and Air Conditioning! In December 2018 the (very old) heat pump in a labor housing unit stopped working, and they came out promptly to replace it. Service was very thorough, and everyone from the company is always kind, professional and very helpful. We were so impressed that we then had them replace the system in another unit and still continue to work with them for regular maintenance. Highly recommend!
