Brian was very professional and thorough in explaining his proposal for our new patio. He explained everything in great detail. His crew worked very hard and definitely knew what they were doing. We received so many compliments on the patio...can't wait to enjoy it in the summer. I would highly recommend Sylvan Gardens for any of your outside or landscaping needs.

Sylvan Garden Landscapes took our ideas for our backyard and provided a great visual design of the final product. Brian and his team were very professional and we appreciated the open communication from the start of the project all the way through until completion. Other contractors we spoke to indicated poor access to complete the project, but Sylvan had no issues bringing in all the necessary materials and equipment. Brian answered all the questions we had and was very knowledgeable talking us through the process. Along with a good amount of river rock that needed removed they were very courteous during clean up and even removed all the fallen leaves in our backyard without us asking. Our project included French drains, a sidewalk, small patio and redefined mulch beds with plantings and stepping stones. The final product turned out even better than we envisioned. We highly recommend Sylvan Landscapes given the pleasant experience we had and would definitely use them for any future landscaping projects.

We recently hired Sylvan Gardens to do a general cleanup of our yard including trimming, removing/replacing shrubs and mulching. Not only were they professional and courteous, but they were hard workers and did an outstanding job. We look forward to future projects with John and his staff.

Absolutely wonderful experience working with this company! They basically took our brown barren wasteland of a front yard into a green and lush picture perfect landscape overnight. The team was hardworking and extremely professional. We've received so many compliments since the completion of our project on not only how great it looks; but, also just how efficient the team was! Also, anytime I had a question leading up to the start of our project I could expect an email back within a day if not within a few hours of sending a message. Sylvan Gardens has completed several projects for us with varying levels of complexity. Each time, the crews have exceeded our expectations with amazing results. The crew is very professional and courteous. They verify the intent of the work requested and seek clarification if they are unsure of any of the requested items. Neighbors have also remarked on their professional and courtesy. In addition to the crew, Brian Friend is well-versed in the landscaping industry and understands the client’s request. He and his crew will make things right in the event something is not quite as requested.

Great experience so far working with Sylvan Gardens. They have completed two of three mini-projects so far. Easy to schedule with, great communicators, and all around good people. I worked with John first to talk through the projects and get the quotes and then John and Zach (project manager) both arrived to recap and talk through each job the morning of, before things kicked off to reconfirm all details (I appreciated that). Zach and two guys coordinated most of the work onsite and did a great job. We had a mid-sized yard grading job (before another company installed a fence), planting of green giant trees and a few shrubs and grasses. They also installed a drainage basin off the corner of my driveway to help solve a water issue on heavy rains. Looking forward to our third job in the Spring. Great crew!

Based on overwhelmingly positive google reviews, we went with Sylvan Gardens for landscaping our home in Upper St Clair over 2 years, but our experience was truly disappointing. Although Brian and the crew were courteous and easy to work with, the quality of plants that were planted were extremely poor. We lost more than 50% of the plants within 12 months and although Sylvan replaced them in Year 2, the same were lost again within 12 months. When we contacted Brian, instead of trying to assess the root cause as to why the plants were not thriving, he told us that they only give 12 months guarantee and there was nothing they could do. Please be careful of the quality and type of plants they use and ensure you clarify the expectations. Would not recommend.

I can't say enough good things about John Friend and his team. We've used them for spring cleanup the last few years and they did a fantastic job. This year we needed to do some additional landscape repair and replanting after we redid our deck. The work that they did was incredible! It looks amazing and is exactly right for the area. The team is very professional and easy to work with. I highly recommend them.

My husband and I recently built a home and were looking to landscape our front, back, and side yards starting from basically scratch. Being clueless about all things plants, the project was pretty overwhelming. I wanted someone who could take care of everything for us, and Brian and the team at Sylvan did exactly that. They put together an awesome design that was tailored to our needs and maintenance style, and also gave us a visual of what everything would look like when completed. Had yard work done with this company. It was overpriced! (about 30% higher compared to the other company)Also be prepared the final bill is way over the estimate. Please read the contract carefully, I had to hire other contractor to finish the work. Not worth it.

Sylvan does some of the BEST work in the business and I will choose them every time! Their staff creates incredible designs, are responsive and professional, and deliver as promised. I have worked with them for several years now - they gave me the most beautiful lawn and most recently added a patio extension with garden beds. They completely brought the rendering to life and I couldn’t be happier!!

John Friend and his team are INCREDIBLE! After working with previous landscapers, we were connected with John who came out ready to take notes and walk through our property with us. He saw our vision and where we wanted to go, took in our ideas and developed a plan, layout, and a visual design that showed us how we could make our Pittsburgh retreat MAGICAL! John and his team have been our best contractors throughout this entire 2 year renovation of our backyard and adjacent property and we could not have asked for a better team. John has worked recently on our driveway grading project, seeded new grass areas, created our backyard patio and landscaping design, and so much more. We have a DREAM home thanks to John and the team at Sylvan Gardens!

John and the team at Sylvan was great! I knew what I wanted, and John made the design and the plants happen, even if my request for native-only plants was difficult to source at times. The landscaping team was polite, neat, and did a fantastic job. When I had any issues, someone was at the house to rectify. I would highly recommend Sylvan!

We recently asked Sylvan Gardens to design and install a Pollinator Garden to replace a very scruffy lawn and a hillside full of weeds. The entire experience from beginning to end was so much more than we had expected. The design was done quickly and very professional. We had plenty of opportunities to fine tune it if needed. Which was rare. The crew that came in to do the actual design implementation were excellent. They removed existing foliage and prepared the soil in 2 days and then the next 5 days transformed our yard from ehhh to a lovely garden. When completed they left the yard immaculate. We had a wonderful experience working with Sylvan Gardens implementing a large project in our backyard. They worked with us to implement a design we hoped to achieve, modifying and iterating multiple times. They gave us great visuals for what it would look like and walked us through everything step by step. Everyone that we worked with from John who managed it all to the men who came each day were kind, friendly and responsive. They took out a retaining wall made of railroad ties and terraced out the space with large boulders. It is absolutely gorgeous and achieved all we had hoped for and more. They connected us with (and managed) people to install lighting and a railing. The planting was all wonderful and we are excited to see how it looks this spring when things are fully in bloom. All in all it was a great experience. We are recommending to all our friends.

Sylvan Gardens has created the landscape design and property maintenance in our large condo building in Oakland for the last three years. Prior to that John Friend/Sylvan did all of the outdoor work at our home in Shadyside. They are a most professional, talented, experienced, reliable and cooperative company. John stays in touch about his plans, sends color computer photos of his design plans, accepts changes, and our property looks beautiful all four seasons. They have a great crew and they work within our condo building budget. From many years of experience I can highly recommend Sylvan Gardens Landscape Contractors.

Cleaned up our back hillside and put in river rock as requested. He recommended 2 trees and they look terrific. I can't wait to see them bloom and grow! His crew left no mess behind. Couldn't be happier!

Paul responded to me quickly and came out for an assessment and to provide a quote within a week of calling. The quote given was reasonable pricing for the amount of work. Paul and his team were doing the work very shortly after.

Paul and his team were kind, respectful, fast, careful, and very hard working. Paul and his team definitely went above and beyond the initial ask (but in a good way). They regraded a pool area that needed leveled out, mulched a very large garden, weeded, trimmed the plants, hauled away stones and bricks that were an eyesore, edged the garden beds, mowed the lawn, and cleaned up a ton of leaves and yard waste. I am not the most physically able person so having a team of guys come help me out was a huge deal. I'll be calling them for all my future needs. I'll be recommending them to all my friends and family
