Second experience at this location, and upon walking in, saw no one wants to be asked ANYthing, AGAIN!

Today when I initially walked in, I asked someone if they worked there, whom I later found out was the manager Keith. He replied, “No, I’m just cutting the flowers” sarcastically smh. I simply didn’t want to assume, so I asked.

I then walked over to Ana, whose body language screamed ‘Leave me alone’ only because the other employee Mark, had his head in his phone and also looked as if he wanted to be left alone.

I’m going to hypothesize that working for the company can be a pain because there’s a vast number of plants/flowers and most customers want to be escorted to the actual product they’re looking for. Which after a while can become exhausting, however the customer shouldn’t feel the frustration of employees and that’s been my experience both times. There should be more than 2 ppl responsible for checkout AND helping guest.

Sadly the men who work watering and tending to the plants are of more assistance than anyone else. Which is unfair to them, because they’re doing the major brunt work already.

I went to shop for several items and was amazed to see the handicapped parking spaces blocked with product. I ask the manager about it and was told the his boss, Matt Hooper, told him to put them there. From the reviews I've read, it does not appear that the owners have any respect for their customers or the laws regarding blocking handicapped parking.

I'm always amused when I see reviews about this nursery that bitterly complain about the customer service.
Just so you know before you go...if you are the type that would like someone to walk you through the selection or help you pick out the right plant for your lighting conditions, DON'T COME HERE! Go to Buchanans in the Heights instead.

This nursery is for people who know what they want, want a better selection than a big garden store, and don't need help. In fact, you will have to drag your plants to your car and load them up yourself no matter how large they are. Christmas is the only exception.

You will not get chatty conversation from the employees, but, in exchange for being virtually ignored, you WILL GET pretty good prices and a good selection.

NOTE: They do not accept returns!

I am repeat customer of this store for years. The purchase in this store is no exchange and no refund. I have no issue on this, just always think twice.
In 2021 summer they had beautiful roses to sale, I brought a few costed over a hundred dollar. They have been growing well in my yard. Only one rose turn out as a climber, normally climber only bloom once in spring. So I keep taken care of it and arrange it to the wall expecting a good bloom this spring. Now it blooms, it’s Dr. Huey! Someone must cut off the crafted rose and let Dr. Huey to grow!
I called the office and explained why I need an exchange, the lady in the phone answered calm and firm: nothing they can do.
I have nothing else can do either. Hope everyone be cautious to buy at this store. I am withdrawing myself to pick up more roses this year, even I already have a wishlist with their roses.

HORRIBLE!!!! People stay away. Go to Lowe’s or Home Depot or other small nurseries instead. They don’t honor thier ads. Lily the manager is rude as hell! She needs to go back and learn basic customer service. The owner of this place probably don’t care because it’s obvious I’m not the only person who has negative experience.

Large assortment of plants. Mongolia Tress were in full bloom. I have not seen any orchids at the location the last few times I have gonevFYI for you orchid lovers. The plants looked healthy and disease free. Would be 5 star 🌟 if they still carried orchids.

Very disappointed in the customer service. I purchased two planters here—expensive, high-quality fiberglass ones that are clearly made to last—and returned the next day hoping to exchange them for a slightly shorter version. I completely understand a no-refund or no-return policy at a garden shop, but these were brand new, unused, durable items and less than 24 hours old.

What truly upset me wasn’t the policy itself—it was the way it was handled. The employee simply pointed at a sign and gave me a blank stare. I asked to speak with a manager, expecting at least a polite conversation. Instead, the employee called someone, put them on speaker, and without any introduction or professionalism, I heard “no refunds” from a voice on the other end.

If someone had just come out and explained the policy in person, with some basic courtesy, I would have accepted it. But being dismissed like that, over speakerphone, with no effort to engage or even make eye contact, was insulting. For a shop selling premium products, I expected better treatment.

A garden lover's paradise. A huge range of colorful flowers and plants. But, sadly outside of fertilizer and pots nothing more to offer as far as yard and lawn care. But, if you're looking for beautiful healthy colorful plants this is the place.

We bought a Christmas tree from there two years ago, and it was fine. We bought one this year (about a week and a half after Thanksgiving), and we were greatly disappointed. Within one week the thing was dropping insane amounts of needles. I’m a worrier, so I kept it well watered, but it turns out that wasn’t the problem. My husband got up under it, and sure enough, it had been spray painted green. We spent almost $200 on a tree that had no hope of lasting through the season. On the bright side, Charlie Brown would be impressed at the size of this disappointment. Lesson learned - check to see if the trunk is green.

So happy with my Christmas tree shopping experience. The staff are super helpful and fast. The tree options were plentiful. Checkout was speedy. And I was home with my tree in no time.

Large plant nursery! I purchased a pachiera aquatica early April with no disease, it is still doing well to this day. Today I purchased a Hosta Queen Josephine and it’s so beautiful.
Update: my Hosta is THRIVING. I had a fungal gnat issue that was quickly resolved with 3 parts water and 1 part hydrogen peroxide.
I water logged my money tree and lost most of the roots in the process but it is still fighting to thrive.

There are three Houston Garden Centers in Houston. I've been to all three. This is the best of the lot.

There is a large selection of flowers, ground , scrubs and trees trees. They also have a nice selection of potting soils and gardening accessories.

They run a full-page ad every Friday in the Houston Chronicle.

This is the first of these garden centers I've been to. I wasn't sure what to expect, but I ended up being pleasantly surprised at the large variety of plants this place has. It's a pretty big facility. I wanted to check out their succulents, but they didn't have many at all. That was too bad. Anyway, this place gave me some great ideas for presents.

I have been going to the Houston Garden Center 5345 West Loop South for years and have been more than a generous customer for our extensive garden. Yesterday I bought a tree priced at $199.99 upon the advice of one of their vendors after showing him a picture of exactly what I wanted. The Houston Garden Centers have a totally uncompromising no returns policy, even if you try to return something in its original pot the same day and most important, even if what you bought was based on the wrong advice of their vendor ( who by the way in my view are paid unethically low salaries). I was told to call their corporate office which I did to which I received a completely indifferent, unfriendly response. This was a good reminder that we can all do a lot better, a business can thrive without greed or lack of humanity. The Houston Garden Centers lack ethical practice in more than one way. After these many years, I will be avoiding this place. Below left is the picture of the plant, a Chinese Fringe Tree, they did not have and, on the right, the Ligustrum which at $216.49 after tax they sold me instead.

Summary: I had purchased almost $500 of plants in the past 3 weeks and 4 day lilies I bought from them ended up being infected with a fungus (day Lilly streak) to which they will not take any ownership. The lady on the phone actually rudely turned it around on me and said why did I buy them if they are diseased. I expect and trust them to be experts in plants and not sell plants with fungus or if it happens maybe don’t offer exchanges but treatments at the least. It is impossible for a non plant expert to know about every disease. Buyers beware and just know what your experience will be if you have any issues with what they sell. I personally will be going to other nurseries not based solely on the plants (because everyone makes mistakes or it takes time for things to develop) but because of the lack of ownership and customer service.

Detail: After purchasing 4 day Lillie’s less than a week ago which had some small dots on the leaves but I didn’t take it too seriously when I purchased them. I am not an expert in plants just to preface this and I expected them to be selling healthy plants. About a week after I purchased them these are turning into streaks on the leaves (see pictures) which is actually caused by a fungus after I googled it. I called in asking what they normally do about this and was promptly told all sales are final and they will do nothing. I was taken aback by this and asked they won’t do anything about this and the lady confirmed it again and asked if they were diseased then why did I buy them rudely turning it back on me. You would not know about the streak until later when it develops nor am I an expert in plants which I expect that expertise to come from them. So beware of this when thinking about doing business with them as I will no longer be supporting them. The least they could offer were the chemicals to treat diseased plants they sold. They are there for the money but not there when anything goes wrong even when it’s their fault.

This is what spending close to $200 on a Christmas tree (with tax and a base included) buys you at Houston Garden Center even after you keep it watered. It is December 27th and this is what my tree looks like after buying it after Thanksgiving! Throughout the month we could hear the needles drop and today when we took off the decorations, we saw just how bad it really was. My wife thought the tree looked spray painted when we bought it but I dismissed the thought thinking that no respectable organization would do that. Upon closer inspection, I believe my wife was right as you could see patches of what appears to be paint. My thought is that these trees were completely brown but to sell them they just quickly sprayed them green to make them appear fresh. It's the only conclusion I could come to since this tree never drank water and looks like it's been dead for months. Needles don't fall off like this unless the tree is REALLY dead.

Take a look at the first photo to see what we originally bought and then compare it to the last photo taken today, roughly 4 weeks later.

I will never go back to Houston Garden Center and I will make it a point to actively campaign against this company unless I am refunded. I may even contact the news as this is just ridiculous.

    Shameful!

Well it’s about that time of year where we all begin to shop for that perfect Christmas tree. I would highly advise against going to Houston Garden Center! Let me share my 2020 Christmas tree experience with you. I purchased what I thought was a beautiful 8ft, full Christmas tree for my home an decorated it the first weekend in December. Within a week, pine needles were falling off the tree in large quantities. I have been purchasing real Christmas trees for the last 10 years and every single one has lasted through January. I was shocked to see needles falling so early. On closer inspection, I noticed paint on the branches and quickly realized I had been sold a dead spray painted Christmas tree. I have attached photos below. You will notice how many needles fell off the tree and the spray painted branches. Also, the picture of the full tree was taken Christmas night. That’s right! The tree didn’t even make it through Christmas! If that doesn’t sum up the year of 2020 I don’t know what does. If you would like to recreate 2020, then go pick out your 2021 tree from Houston Garden Center! Otherwise, I would go anywhere else.

Do not purchase from this store ….. they sold me 11 trees, which 7 of them died in less then 2 weeks. They would not exchange them nor reimburse me the $800 I spent. When I called corporate they refused to honor their product and were rude. They were not interested I. Helping me at all.

Beautiful plants, I sure didn't think of the construction or busy 610 right in in front of of of the store when shopping. They have grass every Thursday, i was there late Thursday, next time I will leave earlier. They had some, but will wait for next week. Staff is friendly, only 2 cashiers but checkout was fast. 6 Packs were $6.99 and 9 packs $9.99. I was happy with my purchase! Peace out!

Stopped by after going to Home Depot next door. Parking was easy and seemed safe. The outside flowers looked so inviting and colorful! I have been looking for a new hibiscus tree for my house. They had many options, braided trunks, non braided trunks, short hibiscus’, tall, full, small. They also had Tri colored hibiscuses and single colored. Basically any hibiscus you can think of they have. I walked around looking for the perfect sized one for me. Found it, no bugs or issues with it. It looked healthy and big. The price was normal. I also got two bags of soil and a pot for all decent prices. I’m happy with my purchase!
