I would recommend this company to any and everyone! I have never had the pleasure of working with a better company. They were timely, professional, very high quality work. Communication was excellent. Nate made several suggestions that were awesome and complimented the original design concept. They never hesitated to implement changes that we requested. They were polite, cleaned up after themselves every evening, professional. Armenio and his crew are AMAZING!!!! We will be using this company again in the future for sure!

Cottonwood is incredible. After having a terrible experience with another landscaper who shall not be named, Dan and team came in and were so communicative, logical, consultative, and we're a pleasure to work with. We had a few small snags which is expected. I didn't love that time & equipment was charged because it cost me more than expected in the end (rather than seeing the full bid price up front for parts of the work). Overall super happy with their work and they rescued me from an entire backyard overhaul project gone bad from another company. Thanks!

We worked with Dan at Cottonwood Landscapes on landscaping design and lighting for both the front and back yards. The bid was clear, concise and accurate as to costs and timing. They completed the work on schedule and we have enjoyed the finished product now for several years and have received many good complements about the design and the layout. It was a pleasure to work with Dan and Cottonwood. I have always found him to be responsive to our needs since that time. We would recommend Cottonwood Landscapes to anyone looking for help with their landscape and lighting needs.

Over the past 15 years, Cottonwood Landscapes has done three projects for us. They redesigned and re-landscaped the backyard of a house we purchased, did another complete landscape of a house we later built and most recently did a some significant further improvements of some landscape features we wanted to add. Their strength is design and hardscape-- the design and build of patios, rock and stacked stone walls, have been beautiful. Dan Cloward, the owner, gives careful, well thought out plans. He took into consideration my ideas/wants. He definitely thinks out of the box. For example, the original build of our current home, because it was built into a steep hillside, did not allow for access to the backyard from our driveway which, for us, was not acceptable. When other landscapers said it couldn't be done, Cottonwood Landscapes owner, Dan, made a design plan that completely excavated that area behind the house that included the arranging and safely re-routing/reburying of the (huge!) main electrical line to our property, and then subsequently built beautiful stone stairs with a stone pathway into our backyard from the driveway.
In addition to all of the above, they have built us a lovely gas-line fire-pit with surrounding seating, a water feature, complete irrigation systems, fences, very sturdy and well built small buildings (sheds) and a beautiful custom potting bench---in addition to the rock walls, patio, pathways and features I have already mentioned.
Dan has integrity--- he has started and finished projects for us when he says he will. His crews have been a pleasure to work with. I've been very impressed that despite all these years, I have seen the same people on his crews. His prices are fair-- though not the least expensive, he's not the most expensive. He ensures that any punch-list at the end of the project gets promptly taken care of.
In summary, if you need to move some earth, build something special for your home and have it done by a company you can trust to complete the project, these guys are it.

    Dan,
Sue and I would like to thank you for the beautiful backyard project you did for us last fall. The willingness to work with us on the design and budget went above and beyond. Your landscapers were all courteous, hard working, and very professional. It was nice to see that they took pride in their work and their workspace. We are looking forward to many enjoyable years in our new backyard. We look forward to working with you on our next project.

Thank You, Kurt and Sue Urses

Overall I would say I am pleased with the design process and the installation. I had them regrade the slope and replace almost everything in my back yard. They replaced some clay with soil, regraded everything to slope away from the house, added a paver walkway, installed sod, and several other items. The workers showed up on time and worked very hard to get job done right and in a timely manner. The landscaping is beautiful, the paver walkway looks amazing, and most of the project looks great. You can tell that they know what they are doing and care about their work.

My only frustrations were how they accidentally broke a rock feature and also how they missed some quality checks. Missing paver sand, pop up drains being buried too deep, and other minor items would all be quick and easy fixes if they had inspected the work or else responded to my requests before the ground froze.

The good news is that they agreed to look at the missed items, and they agreed to fix them later… but I will have to wait 3-4 months for the ground to thaw and then hope that they are still willing to resolve everything then. They definitely got the most important things completed correctly in this project, and it really does look great. But it would have been a better experience if the final touches had been completed correctly and in a timely manner.

We had railroad ties everywhere as retaining walls. They were looking very sad when we asked Dan for a bid. Dan came right over and walked the yard with us. We discussed different options to replace the railroad ties and he recommended a product we liked. We need to see and touch before we decide and Dan was nice enough to meet us at his shop so we could see the different products. The retaining wall crew was very professional and on time each day. They even accommodated a change in the design on one wall. The first set of blocks were spotted and they picked out the ones that would work and ordered new ones. There were 3 separate retaining walls they worked on and we have had numerous compliments on how they look now. We also had an existing pond that leaked and was dark and closed in around it. It also had railroad ties around the outside area and down the edge of the property. These railroad ties ended with granite rocks as the border. Dan suggested we replace these railroad ties with granite rocks to continue the theme and also put in a small patio on the south side. They gave us an initial view of what the pond would look like, smaller with a raised waterfall. We loved what they proposed but when the pond whisperer arrived he suggested something, still within the quoted amount, that we loved even more. This opened the pond and provided a double waterfall. They even find the driftwood to add to make it more natural looking. We love our pond and can't wait for spring to start it up again. They make suggestions along the way that improved the looks and feel of our pond. The patio they laid adds to that area and was laid around an existing fire pit. It looks wonderful! Each crew was courteous and on time and they cleaned up beautifully when they were done, even power washing our driveway. I would recommend Cottonwood Landscapes enthusiastically. The work was completed within the time frame stated in the contract.

Dan Cloward came to my home on May 7th to quote out an awning for our home. I expected to see the quote 24-48 hours later since this is the level of service, I’d received from the other comparative quotes I'd been working on. He did not send me quote till May 20th 13 days later. The quote he sent was a single sentence with a price.

Essentially this wasn't a big enough project to peak Dan's interest, so I got the lazy response. This to me means this company is only going to help you if you have large $10K+ jobs and they don't have the courtesy to tell you to your face they are not interested.

If companies only want certain size jobs, then stop wasting our time and just tell us (the consumer) to our face, we'll appreciate the candor i promise.

The Cottonwood Landscape team started sooner than anticipated which was great. They were fast, professional, and did an amazing job. We could not be more happy with how the project turned out! We highly recommend them and would use their services again.

Last year my wife and I met Nate. Our first impression was that he was professional and friendly. They started our job a couple days late, but no big deal. The workers that did our yard were amazing and hard working. They completed the job on time and my wife and I were very happy with the way things turned out.

But then we had some minor problems, we had an issue with the irrigation system and 2 sprinklers that weren't working. We had to deal with Nestor which was a nightmare, he had excuses every time we spoke.

Trying to reach anyone for assistance was extremely frustrating and time consuming because they would miss all their appointments. One day, we finally got Allen to show up, but he was an hour late because he took a nap in our driveway before he knocked on our door. You would expect professional people when you’re paying top dollar.

When I turned on the sprinklers this spring, I had another problem. All the sprinkler valves are stuck open and don't respond to the timer box. Sheryl told me that they would send somebody over. That was 2 weeks ago and still nothing.

Nate the owner is great at first, but after they get paid, good luck trying to get a hold of him again.

    *** UPDATE ***
The day after I posted the above 1-star review, they came out and fixed the sprinklers and explained to us what we had to do for next winter.

Overall, we're satisfied with their work so we plan to reach out to them this year to finish planting our trees and doing the flower beds around the house.

I selected Cottonwood Landscapes after having watched them work in my neighborhood and I am very glad I did. I have recommended them to all my friends and neighbors. From the initial estimate, I knew they were complete professionals as they talked about all aspects of the work- permits, removal, installation, etc. (None of the other estimates I received included the details they discussed) They really instilled confidence in me that they would do a first class job and I was not disappointed. They provided detailed designs for my work and suggested improvements that I had not considered. Their work quality was superb, the crew were always courteous, and the crew leader was always available to explain the status of what was going on. Each evening they cleaned up the debris along the street leaving the worksite as clean as possible to reduce the adverse effects on my neighbors. They installed 2 terraces supported by block walls 90 ft long and 5-6 feet tall, a block patio and walkway, a rock retaining wall and a sprinkler system. All county inspections were conducted on a routine basis further instilling confidence in the quality and workmanship. It is everything we had hoped for. If you want your work done right, Cottonwood Landscapes is for you!

Two words: Exceeded Expectations! Cottonwood Landscapes finished our front and back yards this summer and exceeded our expectations in every way. From the design to completion of the project, I was constantly impressed at their responsiveness, work ethic, and professionalism.

We had a nightmare of a project left from our home contractor and the city. We contacted over one dozen other contractors to bid the project, but Cottonwood (specifically Dan Cloward) was the only one who came up with realistic, practical ideas on how to transform our unusable yard into a beautiful oasis for entertaining guests and spending time as a family. We were provided with drawings, scope of work, and pricing within a few days. We were given a start date and duration for the project, which they met perfectly.

From day one the workers were there at 7:00 AM sharp, working through the day until usually 7:00 PM. I never had to call and question whether they were going to show up or not, which is very rare in the contractor market. The landscaping played out like symphony, everything coming together quickly, at just the right time to complete one beautiful project.

We had everything done, from the retaining walls, grading, stone stairs, garden, trees, in-ground trampoline, grass, sprinklers, edging, to the focal point in our back yard, the massive pergola, and gas fire pit. I have had all my neighbors and family comment on what a great job was done. We use our new, beautiful yard every day, whereas before, we never went in the back yard because it was a weedy, unusable dirt patch.

I had a wonderful experience with, and would highly recommend Cottonwood Landscape to anyone.

From the first visit to give a bid, to when the entire project was completed, the entire team was very professional. They started our project two days early and completed it ahead of schedule. Very impressed with how they made sure that everything was clean at the end of each day.
We have a pretty decent slope in our backyard that we were unsure how to it make work for us. Dan helped us visualize what it could look like with a couple retaining walls in some key spots, some added trees and shrubs, and couple garden boxes. Now that our backyard is completed, it looks better than we thought it would. We are very excited for next spring and summer. Dan, Nate, Benito, and Crew. Thank you!

We were thoroughly impressed with Cottonwood Landscapes and the work they completed in our yard. Not only did they help us design the backyard of our dreams, they helped us enhance every aspect of our home's landscape. Most importantly they came in ON BUDGET which is very important to us. They worked with us personally to create a yard custom to our wants and perfect for our family. We always thought that finishing our yard would take a lot of time and energy, but working with Cottonwood made the whole process simple and smooth. Our yard was finished in record time! Each employee treated our yard with respect and again, we were so pleased with how quick everyone worked. On one occasion we were meeting with the owner and he looked at one of the trees they had just planted the day before and told his site foreman that they needed to dig it up and turn it a quarter turn so that it would look the best from my patio. We hadn't noticed the issue with the tree and probably never would have but we loved the fact that they were so detail oriented. Their expert knowledge left us feeling confident in our decisions and we know we received a quality product. We would definitely recommend Cottonwood Landscapes to anyone that wants quality work, expert advice and a company that goes above and beyond expectations.

From the initial meeting to completing the with they were a pleasure to do business with!! They were very responsive, professional, and did an absolutely amazing job. The only way you can even tell they were here was our new patio and landscaping! They cleaned up absolutely everything- I will definitely work with them again!

Cottonwood Landscapes built a 20' semi-circular raised patio with pavers, along with some related projects that also involved electrical, carpentry and masonry. My feedback is very positive. Their design skills are excellent. They had a much better vision of the finished product than I did. Their crews were professional, dependable and talented. They knew what they were doing and showed up for a full day of work every day. They also had very good masonry and carpentry subs. And they were generally responsive and easy to work with. I will say this--they aren't cheap. There were some charges that had me scratching my head and we did have a few back and forths. But the questionable charges were relatively small compared to the overall price and I would much rather have a finished product that I love than take a minor price reduction. I would recommend them with confidence, especially for those with high standards.

Was recommended to them by my brother. Very impressed with their work. Great attention to detail and very professional. Planning on using them again for future projects.

We had Cottonwood landscape finish our backyard 8 years ago. Now we are paying another company to fix everything they did. The patio that they did is cracked all over and completely hollow beneath it. And our fire-pit only lasted one season before it began to fall apart.

The folks at Cottonwood were awesome from start to finish. They were able to help us design something that perfectly fit how we wanted to use it, even amongst historical permitting and a lot of physical space limitations. Their workers were clean, conscientious and very friendly. They worked very quickly and their attention to detail is amazing. If we had another yard to work with, we would absolutely hire them again.

Cottonwood Landscapes (CL) re-landscaped about half of my backyard and built an outdoor kitchen and fire pit. You should know that the Owner, Dan and his brother, Nate, are very good at selling you a bill of goods. They are very personable and very smooth talkers. Their line is that CL isn't the cheapest company, but they are by far the highest quality. Since I was looking for quality and Dan was very convincing, I went ahead with them, even though their bid was the highest.

    1) Their contract was very heavily weighted toward advance payment with a large majority of the payment being due before completion. I negotiated something more reasonable. And it didn't occur to me that I'd be ripped off with sparsely placed, very small plants, so I didn't ask that the contract indicate their size in laymen's terms - my bad!

2.) The quality was poor. ALL of the plants were all incredibly small. And because the contract wasn't in laymen's terms, I had no recourse. I was told by Nate that everything they planted was designed to grow and fill in fast. No reasonable person would look at our yard now and say the plantings are full, in year 3. We were definitely overcharged on plant size and quality. And parts of the install were not only sparsely planted, but with absolutely no symmetry or pattern. Basically, the plants were just randomly stuck in the ground. When I asked Dan about it later, he told me I hadn't asked for a "formal" style of landscape design. Wow!

3.) Throughout the projects there were repeated attempts to get me to accept product that was damaged (fire pit ring, fridge door, grill cover, granite), and work that was unfinished (grill cabinet, landscaping). When I insisted that the items be addressed, almost every issue required multiple calls to CL, with most resulting in promises of returned calls which never came, or a promise to be back on site at a certain time, which didn't happen. Then when they did finally return, it would be with no advance notice. And there were several instances of them not accepting responsibility and trying to blame the condition of things on me (fridge door, dead tree, dead plants).

4.) Very bad communication, especially after the install, as stated above. On both projects, they requested final payment before final completion, with the woman doing so being quite demanding and borderline rude. And once they are paid, they don't want to speak with you again. It literally took me months to get them to address a dead tree. Twice! The best quality of service and response that I had in dealing with them was by far and away from their subcontractors, Marathon Electric and JR Broderick Plumbing.

5.) They nickle and dimed me to death. They don't tell you in advance that they will plant so sparsely with such small plants that you will want to add plants (that they will charge you through the nose for). They don't tell you in advance that you will need mulch or wood chips (that they will charge you through the nose for), or that their mulch is very poor quality and short-lived (1 season). And on one visit when I asked Nate for a quote to sell me a couple of shrubs to replace ones that the dog had chewed, I was quoted a price that was TWICE the cost of the same plant type at Millcreek Gardens (not on sale and 50% larger than the ones Cottonwood planted). That's when I was certain I was being taken for a ride.

6.) When I tried to get them to replace a pine tree that died within 8 months, it took easily a dozen texts and calls and several months. When the replacement tree also died within 8 months, it was the same experience, but they accepted no responsibility, because their warranty is just for "workmanship". Workmanship? On live plants? Shameful.

If you have yet to make the mistake that I did and are still considering using them, 1) See Yelp, and 2) Get in the contract a reasonable payment schedule, the size and number of plants, and details of their warranty. And then be prepared to have to work your butt off to get them to deliver what they promised.
