From start to finish, working with Groff Landscape Design was an absolute dream! They responded promptly to our initial request for an estimate and provided that estimate quickly - with the estimated (and final) cost comparable to other companies/quotes we got. Once we started working on the design, again, responses to my questions were answered quickly and professionally. When it came time for installation, the workers showed up every day on time as promised and worked quickly to finish the job. The workers were so prompt that a few of our neighbors even commented that they had never seen such prompt and consistent contractors! The final product is exactly as expected and more! We truly love our new outdoor space and we couldn't be happier. Groff is truly a top notch company to work with!

We engaged with Groff for our large backyard hardscape, small pool and landscaping project in 2021-2022. The process from start to finish was simply the best contractor experience we have had. Design: Sean with the design team was incredibly skilled, detail-oriented and accommodating. Easily worked with us down to minute details, and offered great advice. Quinn with landscape design, similar, he met with us in the early stages and reviewed everything from botany, drainage, and meeting our unique needs. The estimating and contract were clear, accurate, and constantly up to date. Once handed to Josh and the actual build crew, the expertise continued. The crew was polite, hard-working, clean, and friendly. Clearly detailed oriented. We knew almost every day what the plan was and what was needed from us. As our project was mostly during the winter months, and while there were delays due to weather, these were expected and communicated extensively. The end product exceeded our expectations. There were no 'hidden' costs, as we thoroughly discussed and understood change orders as we went along. The personal attention from Jose, Josh, and Rob Groff was exemplary. Seriously cannot recommend Groff strongly enough. You will pay a premium for this level of work, it is a value in every imaginable way.

My neighbor hired Groff Landscape Design for some tricky landscaping needs, including challenging drainage problems due to where we live. A team of us, all designers and artists came up with some pretty creative solutions, but the team at Groff one-upped us, and really dazzled us with their ideas, and the execution was flawless. I have a big landscaping project coming up in the spring, and I look forward to working with Groff to get it completed. Exciting.

I hired Groff Landscape Design to design and install a landscape plan for the entire front and back yard. Robert and Sean were amazing to work with. They were able to design and execute the project in two phases to keep it both as cost effective and aesthetically pleasing as possible. We started with phase one - which included a large deck and shade structure, extensive trees/plantings, lighting, irrigation, drainage, and a vegetable garden. From start to finish, it was a wonderful experience. During the installation I was always made aware of the schedule and the work to be completed. The installation crew was incredibly professional and experienced, and did an excellent job keeping the job site clean each and every day. Overall Robert Groff and his entire team take tremendous pride in their work and their customer service, and really go above and beyond. I am so thrilled with how phase one turned out. I can't wait to work on phase two of the project!

Project scope: demo 1950 concrete steps/walkways & 1980s timber retaining wall. Design & install an entry that combines increased function & Modernist/50s design elements including hardscape & landscape. Groff Landscape Design took our aesthetic goals + our functional requirements and created an outdoor space that nods to the 1950s ranch home and answered all of our space usage needs (widening walkways/driveways, adding lighting, creating seating, integrating appropriate/attractive year-round plantings within hardscape).

We had a very specific design vision, a challenging hillside location, and a list of must-have goals for the finished space. Groff expertly met all those goals. The entire team (from designer Sean, to the onsite demo/build team, to Robert Groff) demonstrated a high-level of knowledge and skill. The Groff team understands both the limits and the possibilities of all the design elements, including: the manufactured build materials (blocks, risers, caps), the outdoor lighting options, and the plant material.

We have past experience working with other contractors in building ambitious/major outdoor projects (building a saltwater spa, outdoor shower, outdoor kitchen) - and Groff Landscape Design demonstrated professional knowledge + thoughtful skill.

The experience of working with Sean, Robert and his team was outstanding from the first step to finish. Sean came for the site visit, listened carefully to what we had to say and came up with a design that we barely changed.

The project included getting rid of our front lawn and replacing with a perennial heavy landscape including flagstone retaining walls, lighting and irrigation. We are happy with the result - the feeling of satisfaction we now get when pulling into our driveway is fantastic - no more ratty lawn, hello pleasing, environmentally friendly landscape!

Robert and his team also repaired our flagstone back patio and fixed some vexing drainage problems. My wife and I highly recommend Groff Landscape and Design. They are most likely not the least expensive solution, but if you are looking for a design/build team that is going to deliver a winning project in a client friendly way, go with Groff!

Groff was active in every part of the project - I always knew where they were in the process from first call to last day of build. Their design process really works to get you what you want AND with your budget in mind. Their team is communicative, effective, efficient and always cleans up after themselves! I highly recommend Groff Landscape Design! We love our new patio!

Am loyal to Groff Landscape Design. Have used their design team for over 11 years and most recently in September 2024. Their amazing creativity, knowledge, communication and follow up is extraordinary. Our back yard was just weeds before & now it is a great extension of our house including creating 2 defined parking spots …which in Old Town…is like gold!

In October 2024, Arlington County informed us that we needed to replace our retaining wall. I contacted 15 different companies, but 10 of them declined the job due to the wall’s height exceeding 36 inches and the need for permits. Four companies provided basic quotes but omitted crucial details like replacing the fence, trees, and grass after the wall was replaced. Two of those quotes also required me to handle the Arlington permits myself.

When I spoke to Rob Groff, he listened to our requirements and provided excellent suggestions regarding wall types, tree replacement, and other details. Additionally, they replaced our walkway and front door steps. Rob was transparent about the project’s start date of April 2025 and estimated costs. At that point, my wife and I didn’t consider any other contractors, which turned out to be the best decision we made.

Throughout the project, Jamie and his team demonstrated exceptional work ethic, even during one of the rainiest springs in the DMV. Despite Arlington County’s attempts to complicate the process with over 20 inspections, they managed to complete the job successfully and it looks beautiful.

Robert and the whole Groff team were amazing. We specifically looked for a landscape designer who would design a complete outdoor space that worked with our new home build. Robert had great ideas and suggestions and listened to what we were looking for (modern design, plants that were simple to maintain, and as little mulch as possible)! Robert worked with our budget and was flexible in taking out elements that we couldn't fit into it (fire pit). The team worked quickly and efficiently and handled our difficult contractor with patience and professionalism. We ran into an issue with lot coverage during the final inspections and Robert was quick to address the issue and paid for the corrective actions despite the fact that our builder was at least partially to blame.

We had a few additional items that needed attention after we moved in (related to our dogs) and Robert worked with us to design additional stones to clean up the problem areas. We recently had our warranty walkthrough and a few plants that didn't survive the winter will be replaced. Everyone who sees our home comments on the landscaping and how well it fits with the overall architecture of the house. Great job all around and one of the only positive experiences from our home building adventure!

We hired Groff in November 2020 to transform our very difficult backyard (flooding, slope issues, dark, etc) into an area that we wanted to spend time in and that was low maintenance. We spent months working with Groff tweaking the design and selecting materials. They were very responsive to questions we had and any problems that arose during construction. We are so happy with the result. They really made every inch useable and I no longer dread my own backyard.

They were on time, professional and courteous. My dad was pleased with their work.
