Joe Lyons was a tremendous help in solving our home heating problem. Ever since we had a new furnace installed a few years ago parts of the house had been overheating, and the furnace ran a lot. The furnace is a German-made Buderus brand Logano G215 model with a Beckett model "AFG" series oil burner. It's a hot water system supplying a mix of very old radiators and moderately old baseboard in a 100+ year old house. Joe did the following:
- looked at the system and diagnosed the cause of the overheating problem
- assessed the other issues with the system that impacted the possible solutions
- recommend the best course of action to remedy the overheating
- suggested that a barometric draft regulator be installed (also called a damper)
- noted several other issues that could improve the functioning and maintenance of the system

Joe even knew of an HVAC company in our area that he felt was competent to do the work.
I contacted the local HVAC company and they seemed good. However, had I not had Joe's advice in advance this company might have first tried a solution that would not have been right for our situation. Because of Joe's through diagnosis of the system I was able to call the attention of the HVAC's diagnostic person to an issue that would have been a problem if we had pursued his first suggestion for a solution. I hired them to do the work and when a question came up I was able to call Joe and have him speak to the HVAC company lead man to help decide how to handle the issue. Details:
The overheating was due to the fact that this furnace was what is called a "Warm Start" boiler. These are designed to be kept warm all of the time, and can suffer excess corrosion and clogging if they are not kept warm enough. Therefore the furnace will fire to keep the boiler warm even when the house thermostat is not calling for heat. The problem was that as well as heating the water in the boiler itself, this hot water was migrating into the radiators in the house as well. The radiators closest to the boiler were getting hot when they shouldn't have been and thus causing those rooms of the house to overheat.
All of our previous furnaces had been "Cold Start". They would only fire when the house thermostat called for heat. In between times the boiler could get very cold. Getting cold did not damage these cold start systems because they were designed for it.
What Joe suggested, and what should have been done when when this Warm Start boiler was installed, was to install a flow control/back-flow prevention valve to keep the hot water out of the radiators unless the house thermostat was calling for heat and turning on the circulation pump. This has made a great difference in the overheating of the house and in the amount of time the furnace fires just to keep the boiler warm. We expect that our heating oil will go down substantially.
As Joe recommended the HVAC company examined whether or not a barometric draft regulator should be installed and decided the system would function better with one.
Joe also suggested that shut-off valves be installed around the furnace so that the entire (fairly large) heating system wouldn't have to be drained for maintenance to the furnace.
A hot-to-cold side return pipe was installed to help keep the boiler temperature in the right range, as recommended by the manufacturer, and in accordance with Joe's suggestions.
We have not yet replaced our simple mercury thermostat with a more modern one, which Joe suggested.

Not your average HVAC guy. Joe thoroughly understands the science and actually knows how to do (and in fact does do) the math. I highly recommend Lyons Dynamic Solutions to take care of HVAC needs. Mr. Lyons came to my condo in late May 2017 and inspected my A/C system. He explained to me what he was doing with the system during the inspection and why he was checking the system charge, filter, drain line, wiring and dampers. I appreciated Mr. Lyons telling me what he was doing in language I could understand instead of the typical over the head techno-jargon which I am used to encountering.

We contacted Joe Lyons to provide an estimate to replace our almost 16 year old electric water heater. He explained in detail, what size water heater we should replace the old one with, what size thermal expansion tank we should have as part of the install, and the need to have a catch basin for the water heater to be placed in. We decided to go with Joe as he was very professional in his explanations of each component included in the install. He was also very knowledgeable as he answered any question we had, e.g. as to why something new being added to the hot water system that wasn't there previously. He was very timely in completing the hot water heater install, as well as doing a very good job of cleaning up before leaving. Joe also made himself available after the work was complete to provide answers for proper setting of the water temperature. We would no problem calling Joe again for using his professional services!
