The Project Manager, Ryan, was just amazing. My backyard project was not the biggest or the fanciest, I had a budget and wanted to create something for my children to play on. Ryan and Black Diamond worked with me and made everything work out. He didn't make me feel like my project was too small or that I couldn't afford to go all out - he made me feel like my project still mattered to them. I've gotten quotes higher and lower than Black Diamond, but at the end I chose them because they made me feel comfortable. They are not the cheapest or the most expensive. And that crew that worked with Ryan - Rigo and his team, they were great. Just respectable, on time and overall professional. And they went above and beyond on a lot of things during the project. I've already recommended Black Diamond and Ryan to my neighbor and a few others.

Edit: Be sure to understand everything about the area you selected and the work you had done. Because I rested on the professionals for advice and knowledge, I was left with a partially damaged area that I didn't know could happen based on design (I'm not an artificial turf expert). They would not assist without charging me. Be careful with the words of "warranty" on their work or products.

Editing my previous review of Oct 2024:

I called Black Diamond after posting my original review and had them look at the shared pictures. Tony called and immediately took action after apologizing for shoddy work. He had his crew come and reinstall pavers in the areas where water was collecting and in side yards where the pavers were separating. They also finally installed the drainage pipe and reinstalled pavers in that area. The LED lights are fixed as well. I appreciate their customer service!

Regarding the weeds growing between turf and pavers, they told that they tightened the turf further in the base. We will know in coming months if the weeds are still growing.

When the project started, in 2018, someone called Chance was in charge. After a great pitch, he got our project. After that he payed least attention when the project was in progress, since he was getting married. After they leveled the ground to lay pavers, they didn’t come for a few days and then it rained in between. I was concerned. But they said it won’t be a problem. (Later water started collecting there) . They laid one section again because too much water was getting collected. It still has some issues. You can see moss only on the pavers where water stays long enough.

Since Chance was absent, the workers used to be clueless on where the pavers start, where the sitting wall starts among many other things! I had to come back from my office many times to make sure things are done correctly. So it was almost no supervision.

They didn’t provide proper drainage in spite of reminding them several times while the work was going on, and even later after complaining over the calls. Now you can see discoloration (see pic) . That area is perpetually wet and a slipping hazard!

Also I noticed the pavers in side yard didn’t look even right when they were laid, but the workers didn’t think it was a problem.

After the project was done, within a few months, a couple LED lights started dimming and one went off. Initially they came once to replace one of the lights that was off. After that all lights went off. I called several times, but they didn’t come to address the issue. We are with non working LED lights for at least last 4 out of 6 years!

Lots of weeds growing between pavers, tile and turf (see pics). For the weeds, they said we can take care of it ourselves. I have asked people who have pavers / turf. No one has had these kind of issues!!

***If we don’t call maintenance guys every 15 days, it would be a weed jungle between the pavers and turf.

I have called them Multiple times. A couple of times some people visited too. But they haven’t taken any action to fix all the issues.

So finally I had to leave a review! I am posting this in hope that they finally take action since I’m fed up of persuing this matter from time to time with Black Diamond, over last 6 years!

I have spoken to several people from Black Diamond over the years - Jeff, Tony, Liz, Haley, Liz, Temple among the few!

After getting at least 5 bids ranging from what I'd describe as "econo companies" to "high end" companies. I landed on Black Diamond primarily due to my initial contact with Tony Baumgartner. He was very genuine and didn't try to BS me as some of his competitors had. I felt the price was fair considering Black Diamond is a long established company with a great reputation and I knew they would be accountable. Once the project started, I found Tony to be more concerned about many aspects of the build than I was. He was on site A LOT (over a 2+ month build) and walking the project to correct any potential errors. We spoke often and worked thru MANY changes as it came to life. Tony always encouraged the changes (and suggested some others). He constantly repeated that changes were not a problem because his goal was to be certain we were happy with the final product. The crews were ALL completely respectful of our space and were very pleasant to interact with (even when I was bugging them). In closing, we are very pleased with the end product and will definitely be going back to Black Diamond for a future front yard project. (Pics attached- Plants coming later. Light poles temporary)

We hired Black Diamond pavers to replace an aging cracked driveway and walkway and we couldn’t be more pleased. Trisa was our designer and she worked with us every step of the way. She optimized design, brainstormed how to fix adjoining damaged flagstone patio and ensured that we understood our options and were happy with the outcome. She even met us at the paver resource center where we could see different pavers installed in sample sections. We are very happy we went with this company. The paving installers, Joe and Lucas, were also wonderful. Joe made some recommendations that improved appearance of the steps including using 2 lights per step which also improved illumination. The steps look very cool.

Our initial contact with Black Diamond was with Patrick and subcontractors, Gabby and Jiro. They are incredibly hard workers and put forth 100% effort. Unfortunately as the job progressed, it became apparent that the materials that we were using on our job was outside their skill set. There were missteps and rough patches, and we were very concerned. To their credit, Black Diamond responded with a robust commitment to do whatever it took to get the job back on track and performed to a high standard of excellence. Matt became the lead and a new team, led by the the lcrew of Sergio Sr. and his son, Sergio Jr. was put in place. With Matt's steady guidance at the helm, and the honorable Sergio family on site, the work began again in earnest. They did a great job, worthy of reflecting well on this company.

I had great experience with Black Diamond. I bought my first house and the builders left the backyard with just dirt and within a few weeks weeds had taken over. After looking online and talking with a couple different companies, I decided to go with Black Diamond because of the amazing reviews and the verity of services they offer.
My project was quite small compared to what I have seen in their portfolio but Trisa Soleil was great in helping me figure out what I could afford and what would work best for my situation. She showed me different options and did all the measurements. Once it was all settled, the project was started a couple weeks later.
Sergio came out to scope out the project before hand and then during the process he and Trisa made sure everything was perfect and made adjustments as needed.
I love how it turned out and will definitely use Black Diamond again to add to my property!

I will admit this review is long, but that’s because we were SO happy with Black Diamond. TLDR (Too Long Didn’t Read): Don’t hesitate! Hire Black Diamond and ask for Dan Jolly as your designer/project manager along with Leo Rodriquez as your landscaper and Carlos Carvalho for hardscape. You won’t be disappointed and you’ll be so glad you did!

To give you some background, my husband and I moved into a new construction home with just dirt (and soon weeds) as our backyard. We have always dreamed of a modern Japanese garden inspired backyard that was drought tolerant and low maintenance. We also just wanted to do a minor upgrade to our front yard since what was put in by the builder just wasn’t cutting it for us.

Dan was one of the first designers we had out to talk ideas. He was great at listening to our needs and wants while suggesting ideas we might not have thought about (which is what we wanted). While we did interview a few other designers/companies, no one could competed with Dan’s immense knowledge for both hardscape and landscape.

Dan did a fantastic job on our design, really bringing everything we talked about to life. Once we signed the contract, we were fortunate enough to start work really quickly afterwards! Dan was great at communicating with us often by text/phone call throughout the entire process on updates, timelines, and any minor changes if needed. He was always gracious with my numerous questions and texts. During the work, Dan often came by each day (even multiple times a day) to make sure things were progressing as planned and to make sure no details were amiss. We really appreciated Dan’s attention to detail and working with us every step of the way to make sure every rock, tree, and plant was exactly where we wanted it and we were happy with everything. Dan was just an absolute pleasure to work with.

We went with pavers for our three patio areas and boy, were we impressed with Carlos Carvalho and his crew. They made sure every paver was in its proper place, level, and cut to the exact fit when needed! We had A LOT of pavers in our design and we were amazed how fast they were without cutting any corners on quality! We absolutely loved the look of the pavers when they were all done.

Leo Rodriquez and his crew took care of our landscaping and he was magnificent to work with. Like Dan and Carlos, Leo paid very close attention to the details when laying every layer of our landscape. We had a dry creek bed in both the front and back yards, and the crew made it look like a creek bed had been running through there all along! Leo himself was just a delight to work with. He kept us updated on his crew’s progress and also made sure we were happy with the results every step of the way. He always had a smile on his face and was always warm with us and our toddler. Honestly, we’d adopt him as our uncle if we could!

Not that we will be needing any landscaping work anytime soon due to the wonderful job the entire team did, but if we ever do need work done in the future, we already know who we will be calling. Thank you again to everyone at Black Diamond who made our dream yard come true! :)

We have friends that had work done by Black Diamond and they were very pleased with the results, so we called for an estimate.
Matt came out and gave us an estimate and helped us choose the quarry stone that would look best with our house and landscaping. They were able to start within a week and stayed on schedule for the whole project. We had our driveway, walkways and stairs done.
We could not be more pleased with the results! It really transformed the look of the house and pathways. We had some rickety paths that were a challenge to walk on. The pavers not only look fantastic but make our landscape safer to walk on.
All of the crews worked so hard to make every detail perfect and cleaned up before they left each day. We decided to add lighting, which looks so beautiful at night. We also opted to have the pavers sealed due to all of the trees we have that drop stuff throughout the year.
Matt was here nearly everyday checking on the job. We can’t thank him and the crews enough for their dedication to making every detail perfect!

My fiancée and i had a larger, undeveloped backyard that we'd really wanted to turn into our own backyard oasis and make the space usable and beautiful. We'd shopped around quite a few companies, and ultimately decided with Black Diamond; we are extremely pleased to say we were happy with the decision. Our project manager/coordinator/designer, Sean, was awesome. We set an appointment for a walkthrough, and over the course of a few days in person, we sketched out our vision/plan. He was super knowledgeable and helpful, he was helping us make our vision come to life while also lending his professional eye and expertise/opinions for different material contrast, textures, etc. He even went above and beyond to do 3D renderings of the project so we can see and make edits of our vision before the crew came out to get the work done. We also gave him our budget ceiling, so he was able to really optimize and maximize the work and use of product while staying within our budget. Sean brought out Paolo and his crew, and our whole yard was completely re done in just a couple weeks. Two new patios, turf area, beautiful pavers and a pathway. New irrigation lines set up for us to do our own planting when needed. During the work, we even noticed a few things we wanted slightly altered, and the crew was more than willing and quick to make those changes for us. During the planning and work stages, both Sean and Paolo were always available by phone, if not already on site, so communication was seamless and super appreciated. To say we are extremely satisfied would be an understatement. I should have gotten to posting this review sooner (they finished at the beginning of July)... but we were just too busy enjoying end of summer in our completely renovated dream backyard. All thanks to Sean, Paolo, and the folks at BD. Highly recommend for folks in the greater Sacramento area.

Black Diamond did a great job landscaping our backyard. Dan Jolly was our design specialist and during the initial consultation we spent nearly three hours discussing ideas that work with our budget. Just over a week after meeting Dan and agreeing on a plan, the crew was out here and got to work. Dan visited multiple times to make sure that everything was going as planned. I still have more work to do on our backyard but will be calling up Dan early next year to start part two of our project. Overall, I’m very happy with the job they did and will continue using Black Diamond for any future projects.

We had just demo'ed a fairly big koi pond in our side yard and needed to finish it off so that it could be useable space. Part of the area needed to be paved and the other portion was for a garden. The end product turned out great. They did a brick patio area with a walkway through the garden area. Now we are onto the final phase of planting the garden. I enjoyed working with this team and especially Tyler. He cared about the project all the way through and saw it to completion. I would recommend this company.

When I need to have my backyard done, I have the privilege of working with Pat Danyo. He helped me design my backyard. During the process of this project, I found him to be very knowledgeable and talented in his craft. He genuinely cares about his clients. He always responds to your questions and concerns in a timely fashion. And his follow-through is faultless. What sets him apart from others is his ability to listen (I mean really listen) to his client. He will incorporate your ideas and concerns into his plans to create a cohesive blueprint that transforms your backyard (or whatever project) into an oasis for you to treasure and enjoy.

Rich Martin from Black Diamond Paver Stones & Landscape did a great job on our project. He was professional, easy to work with, and the final result came out really nice. The work was completed on time and the quality shows. I’d definitely recommend Rich and his team.

So happy that we partnered up with Black Diamond Pavers to refresh our back patio. Tyler made the process really easy from start to finish, and I use the term "partnered" because it seemed like he was genuinely vested in our project with us. Joe and his crew did an amazing job, and we are beyond thrilled with the final results.

Our designer Tyler Schafer and the crew were phenomenal. They completed the job in half the estimated time while not sacrificing quality. Their attention to detail on our patio was great. It was such a huge upgrade to our backyard and worth every dollar.

Our backyard transformation turned out beautifully, and for that I give full credit to Joe and his crew. The retaining wall, sod, irrigation, and drainage were all installed with great care and craftsmanship. Joe communicated every step of the process, made sure we were happy as things progressed, and pushed to make sure things were done right. He's the reason we're enjoying our backyard today.

Where I have mixed feelings is the sales and project management side. Our Project Design Specialist sold us heavily on the idea that Black Diamond's point of difference was oversight and communication that he'd be on-site at every key stage to inspect materials and quality before anything moved forward. In reality, he showed up on day one, stopped by briefly on day two, and arrived for the final walkthrough. The quality assurance they promised was really delivered by Joe himself.

We also had to push back on the final walkthrough to get a drip line installed that was explicitly in our contract - not sure if it was missed during install or just not communicated down to Joe and his team, either way it was quickly addressed and Joe came out the following day to install it.

The work itself is excellent. The company's processes and the value for money left something to be desired. If you go with Black Diamond, ask for Joe.

We had a great experience working with Rich and Charles on our backyard landscaping project. Rich did an excellent job designing the space and bringing our ideas to life, and Charles, the Landscape Foreman, led the crew with professionalism and skill while working hands-on to make sure everything was built perfectly. They were responsive, addressed all of our concerns, and made the entire process smooth from start to finish. We’re very happy with the final result and highly recommend their team!

Many thanks to Bruno and Paolo and their wonderful crew for the beautiful job completed in my back yard. I’ve never had any landscaping done before and had a very small budget, so wasn’t certain of what to expect. A neighbor highly recommended Black Diamond, and I had some trepidations because I didn’t know how to decide exactly what to have done. But Sean did a fantastic job of guiding me through what were my top priorities as well as pitfalls to avoid. There were a couple of small hiccups - for example, some materials were not delivered on time by subcontractors - but Bruno and the crew kept me up to date on what was happening, cheerfully, respectfully and professionally, and any concerns I had were addressed promptly. I would definitely recommend Black Diamond - and especially Sean, Bruno and Paolo, who made it all come together for me.

I'm very glad I hired Sean with Black Diamond to be my Landscape Architect and Project Manager for my back yard improvement project. I have met with other companies to get quotes, but only Sean showed genuine sign of care and interest for the project. He was there from day one through the end of the project, educating and guiding my family and I along the way. I have worked with other contractors before, but no as great as Sean. Javier was the subcontractor tasked with the improvements and he did a terrific job. Javier is hardworking, humble, and easy to work with.
