Home Services reviews in West Chicago, Illinois

Prompt visit to give an estimate. Reasonable pricing. The work was done in a timely manner. Courteous crew showed up to do the work. I would highly recommend Davey and Craig in the West Chicago office.

Kathy Vranek is absolutely excellent. We had to have a large oak removed that was close to two homes. The Davey crew was superb--timely, good communicators, careful, and highly professional. I have used Davey for years and am exceedingly pleased with our main contact with Davey in Kathy Vranek.

The three men who came to do the work were great. They were extremely good workers and always made sure the grounds were cleaned. It was a very good experience.

DAVEY did a great job cleaning up our backyard area. They did quality work, cleaned up, were on time and followed up with us several months after first visit. They did come back to finish things they were not able to do on the first visit.

Prompt and professional service
Crew was willing to discuss work ti be done with options when appropriate. -
First off, davy isn't the cheapest around, but their crew was professional and organized. They had good equipment and they were fast and efficient, cleaned up their mess and asked me if i had any questions at the end. They cut me some pieces of the tree trunk for my fireplace. it was a five star experience for me. try them out today.

Brad was on-site shortly after my first contact with this company. We discussed my concerns and he gave a clear explanation of the services that I needed to keep my Silver Maple tree healthy and safe for years to come. The work crew, headed by Ben and Cesario were friendly, professional and very efficient.
I have already begun recommending this company's regional office to my friends and neighbors. -
It was a pleasure doing business with Davey Tree. Everyone I dealt with was courteous and very knowledgeable. The technicians who removed the tree were very respectful of my property and did an amazing job.

They are really fabulous, experts, passionate, and go the extra mile (like trimming a tree not on the agenda and freely give advice for you to do things yourself). Love Davey!!

Kyle and the crew at Davey Tree Service in West Chicago did a great, thorough job in removing the very large stump in our front yard. Thank you, thank you, thank you! I highly recommend them.

This was the second time I used Davey Tree. The first time was excellent and all went great.
This last time in July of 2019 they came out and went through what I needed done and gave me the price (was my highest quote but past experience leaned me to them). Called them a few days later to gave ok to proceed on quote. They called to set up day and time about 6 weeks later. The crew was great, working very hard in hot weather and raining off and on. They cleaned up great and took great care of all other landscape in yard. They trimmed back branches from my house and some from my neighbors not 8 to 10 feet but some, and thinned out inside of tree. My only concern was that the one tree I wanted the branches that were growing down were not done. I asked the crew about this but said they can't trim more than 20% of the tree. I guess I did not read quote thoroughly and I miss understood the way it was written on the quote. Davy is a good company but be sure you understand completely what is going to be done or you may have to do it yourself.
Update 8-31-2019
Received call from Davey Tree and they said they would like to come out and take care of what I was not satisfied with. Setup appointment for Tuesday 8-13-2019. Received call in morning of 8-13 that they can’t make it as crews were out evening before because of windy rain storm south of me. Offered me Thursday 8-15 but I said no and set appointment for Thursday 8-22. On Thursday 8-15 they show up, I said appointment is on 8-22. On site person call the sales arborist who made appointment and he comes out. He said he was sorry for mix up and the appoint is set for 8-22. On 8-21 send email as to what time they are coming out but no answer. On 8-22 I call main office and leave message asking time and also call sales arborist and leave message but do not receive call back. On 8-27 I put out email to sale arborist that basically says I really thought this was going to happen and I will have to look for someone else to do it. Checked with 2 other companies but to expensive so I will be doing it myself slowly. Received email on 8-27 from sales arborist saying he was sorry and he thought he called me and said I was scheduled for Friday 8-30 and I said don’t bother and do not come out. On 8-28 he emailed me again saying he was sorry but that bad weather a couple of times and sickness in crew caused scheduling problems. He said he really wants to complete this. I answered he back and said I do thank you for still wanting to try but no thank you.
Do not want to chance going through the excuse/no show process again. -
I needed an oak tree treated for oak wilt and they came very quickly to take care of it. Andy J. was the sales guy who came to my property to take a look at everything. He was great and very helpful. I thought the price was a bit high for treating some of the larger oaks, but I don't have a frame of reference to compare against. I think for what the service is, the price could be a little lower. Overall, I was happy with them and thought they responded quickly.

I’m grateful Steve could stop by that morning to give the guys his vision of pruning. They did a great job. We are very happy and want each of them to know. Thanks!!

Here's my Davey experience from start to finish. It's a long review but a short story. You can be the judge of whether they're the kind of company you want to do business with.
There was a tree in the corner of my yard with two equal trunks. One grew over my yard, and the other grew over the neighbor's. I cut down and cleared out the first trunk on my own, and then my neighbor decided to have Davey cut down the other.
My neighbor gave me a Davey contact card and said they'd like to come over to inspect the tree and need my permission. I called the number, left a voicemail (no one answered) and simply said, I just need someone to call me and talk before anyone goes on my property (I would have thought this would be standard practice anyway). We have a dog and young kids, and we wanted above all to make sure they weren't out playing when someone showed up and opened up the gate.
A couple of hours later, my wife let me know that some woman was walking around in our fenced-in yard (I was at work). No prior call from them. Actually received a call later, where the arborist made it clear that she felt I was inconveniencing her.
Later I received an email going over their plans. Had to go back and forth to get basic clarification on what would be done, including another in-person visit. I emphasized several times that if they were to cut down the tree, I just wanted them to leave the area reasonably neat, with the tree trunk/stump removed all the way to the ground. Again, I'd expect this to be default practice, but I got a surprising amount of resistance and the arborist changed her story over and over (first it would be no problem, then I was told they'd leave a 4 foot stump (???), then they could remove it to ground level, but only if I cleared the stump on my side flush to the ground first- because her company "doesn't have a saw big enough" to accomplish it otherwise. I didn't understand, so I questioned and she reiterated again that her company does not have a saw big enough to cut "their" half of the stump to the ground, unless I clear out "my" half first. It was literally the exact same job of the exact same size for both of us (each half was virtually the same size, shape, and no other obstructions). I had no problem doing the job with my 14" battery powered chainsaw that she claimed multiple times that her company lacked the saw capacity to do. In other words, she was just being lazy, made up a ridiculous excuse, and lied to my face.
So the work was finally set to be done, but then she notifies us on short notice that it will have to be postponed because they double-booked the equipment they'd need. I didn't care about this, but I would be annoyed if I were the customer/my neighbor.
The work eventually gets "done." Again, I request that whoever enters my yard call shortly before they need to do so. They say no problem. No one ever calls.
I come home from work on the day the tree was cut down, and I find two big sections of tree trunk laying in my yard. Conservatively, the smaller of the two is easily more than 500lbs.
So basically, they were a hassle to deal with through the entire process, they were dishonest, they were extremely unprofessional, and they left the job incomplete with me left to clean up their mess. -
The initial consultation was good, but then the outlined process I was told wasn't accurate. First, I was told that the initial felling, pruning, and stump removal would be on the same day. The tree planting would be later once it could be sourced. Then later it was the felling and prunign on one day, with the stumping and planting on a different day. In reality, the felling and pruning happened on one day as scheduled and things seemed to be good. I was given a day for when the planting would occur, but it that day came and went with nothing. I then left on vacation returning home to find out that they had done the stump removal without notifying me that they had scheduled it or that it had been done. Turns out they also destroyed one of my driveway lights while doing this having driven over it and smashing it to a pulp. They did call to notify me when they'd be by to plant the new tree and that went ok. Overall, the continual changing of the timeline and lack of communication were both off putting. The staff who did the work were good, but they really need to work on planning and communication.

The crew that did our trimming and tree removal (Adan, Cristo, and Kelsey) were courteous, efficient, and hard working. They were careful to protect other elements of the landscape while they worked. They also had a good sense of aesthetics while trimming the tree. Ben, who came out the next day to grind the stump, was similar in performance. Other reviews mentioned higher price, but in my opinion, when you’re dealing with specimens that took 30 to 50 years to grow, you want great results - and here, I got what I paid for.

Very good experience overall. Quick response to my initial inquiry, and the consultation was great. They were able to perform the work earlier than expected and were prompt, efficient and clean. They trimmed a lot of inner growth out of a 30+ year old tree and removed an overgrown Mulberry bush. They picked up every bit of scrap bigger than 2" -- I think the lawn looked better than when they arrived. The team even moved my patio furniture back onto the deck when they were finished. Very pleased, will book again. Thanks!

A fantastic job of pruning our very tall arborvitae and yew along our sidewalk. Also pruning the boxwood at our front door and under the windows of our sun room, and the juniper at our terrace, along with a few other hedges. Finally, delighted to have the low branches removed on young and rapidly growing maple, and a tired viburnum removed. The crew was efficient and thorough. Thank you!!!

Had to cut down a 25 y.o. Japanse Birch due to expanding our patio and building a gazebo. Contacted Davey in West Chicago and it was a great experience, from the day I spoke to the Arborist to give me a quote, to the day the work was done.
The crew showed up as scheduled, with all the necessary equipment and in less than two hours the work was done, cut down the tree, grind the stump, run the tree trunks and branches throught the chipper and clean up the area.
Very professional, knowledable and proficient. Highly recommend them! -
Quick response after storm damage to our large maple tree. Arborist came promptly and crew worked to remove damaged and downed branches in extremely hot and humid conditions. We are very pleased with this and all previous times we have had Davey work on our property.

I own a home in Elburn and have had Craig Baltes out to my property to help address my Tree, Shrub, and Lawn issues. He provided a professional evaluation of the property, educated me on why things were necessary or appropriate (or not), and helped me figure out the priorities that I could address within my budget. Craig was an absolute pleasure to work with, he's funny, he's smart, and I trust him with the care of my property. Davey isn't the cheapest around, but then again no one brags about hiring the cheapest doctor in town. If you want an honest and fair evaluation of your property, and want to know you're spending good money on important issues, call Davey and ask for Craig Baltes.
