We had Refuge Landscape do an update and refresh of 6 large planters in our front yard here in Mendota Hts. They also removed a large older play structure from
our backyard. The planters needed to have the stone borders and wall redone. Matt and Refuge did a professional job and our yard and planters are now refreshed and look great. Very pleased with the work.

I had an enormous project to rehabilitate several parts of my property, which was covered with volunteer trees, head high weeds and field grass. Matt was very knowledgeable about both hardscaping and landscaping, and was very thorough in outlining the work. His crew was professional and very fast, taking years of neglect and turning it into a beautiful, manageable landscape in a matter of days. His service doesn't stop there. He came out and discussed it the care of the project, and will continue to follow up in the fall. Both skill and customer service outstanding. I highly recommend Refuge Landscaping.

We had the BEST experience with Refuge Design & Landscape. We were in desperate need of new landscaping in our front yard, especially in terms of design. My husband and I had a short list of wants, and Matt and his team exceeded expectations! They completed all the demo of the old, overgrown shrubs and trees, then designed around the natural turn of our sidewalk and the request for bee friendly, native plants. He sent us photos of different options for wood chips and plants and edging, it was just exactly what we wanted, and had no idea it could turn out so great! We are extremely happy with our overall experience with Matt and his Refuge Design & Landscape crew! From the point of talking through our vision, to being able to squeeze us into their installation schedule, to the finished bluestone with arbor project, the crew worked to make our vision become reality and exceeded our expectations! We just ordered the patio furniture yesterday (with a much longer lead time), and we can't wait for the first of many future grill outs, bonfires, and memories on our new patio. We needed a retaining wall (not the fence) replaced before winter weather began. They were prompt and efficient. They did a great job in a short time, on short notice. We were very pleased, from the consultation to the finished product.

Matt and team replaced our deteriorating landing and steps in our backyard as well as placed flagstone steps to our fire pit and concrete bullet edging around our existing rock beds. The crew was very professional and tidy. They took extra care of our existing plants, carefully trimming them or removing them and re-planting them after the work was complete. We are very happy with the final design and all the work done and would highly recommend them!

Really appreciated Matt’s ideas - he came up with a great solution to covering up an unsightly under-the-deck area in conjunction with the installation of the new patio he designed.

Our main goal was to remove a lot of dirt, rocks and large root system from an old tree, grade the earth to solve our water problems and create zones to really use our yard. Matt and team are hard workers and the job was completed quickly. They keep the site neat and cleaned up before they left. They carefully avoided disturbing my neighbors flowers on the property line. Matt worked to problem solve and research when we asked for a bee lawn and when our gutter project rerouted where the water would end up. Thanks for everything. The photos do not do it justice. An entire dumpster of dirt, rocks, debris left this site. Once the green bee lawn is in, I'll try to remember to update the photos on this review.

I recently bought a home with a very steep backyard. It was just grass (barely) and pretty much unmowable due to the extreme slope. I had always wanted a water feature and nice landscaping so I found Refuge based on a lot of research and their high ratings and reviews. The reviews were not wrong. Matt came out and met with me and we talked for quite some time. As he got to know me, what I wanted (and didn’t want) in a backyard, Matt and his designer came back with a plan that I could have never conceived of in my wildest dreams. What blew my mind was how they made the rendering come to life in the final product. They created a very large berm with evergreens to address my concern about privacy as well as a huge stream which makes use of the steep hill. They surrounded it with tons of rocks and boulders and native evergreens, trees and plants. One of my friends that came by said that it totally reminded him of a recent trip he and his girlfriend had taken to Duluth to look at the waterfalls. Everyone is in awe of the beautiful oasis that Matt and his team created. Matt and his crew have to be some of the most passionate people I have met. Every single one of the people on his team takes great pride in their work. When I came out for the final reveal, I’m not going to lie, it brought tears to my eyes. And one of the best parts was seeing the looks of pride on the faces of the crew as I oooed and ahhhhed at their work. They are true craftsmen, I was so impressed with how hard they worked and how much they cared about every little detail. As with every large project, of course there are going to be some hiccups along the way. To me, that is a given and it’s not that the hiccups occur, but more importantly, how they are handled. Matt listened to all of my concerns and addressed any issues to my satisfaction. I couldn’t be more pleased that I selected Refuge and would hire them again in a minute. A+++++++ Thank you Matt and crew for making my sanctuary dreams come true!!!

Matt and the Refuge Design & Landscape team did a great job with my project! It was a bit interesting to make a pseudo patio to place a relatively large pool (24' x 12') and Matt was extremely responsive to my specifications. He and his team made sure I was satisfied before the job was done. We are really happy with the result!

matt and his team at refuge have done work for me twice, installing a new retaining wall (after my old one collapsed) back in 2017 and again, some less demanding work, this past summer. on both the large project and the smaller one (mainly yard beautification), they were efficient, professional, and pleasant to work with. i remain very pleased with the results of their work in both the long and the short term. the earlier project was long and involved, and they built one heck of a retaining wall and drainage system! i was happy to have them back to keep my property looking great and to take care of what it needed. thank you, matt!

I cannot say enough good things about working with Matt and the team at Refuge. My backyard was transformed into an oasis that fit me and the work is getting a lot of great compliments from family and friends. I can’t wait to enjoy it for many years to come. we’ve been working with matt and his team for over 10 years to complete the landscaping vision for our home. this summer we completed our fourth and final project. everyone at refuge design and landscape has been a pleasure to work with; matt is quick to respond and checks in frequently. the entire landscaping team is professional and courteous.

some of the highlights of our experience include: removing a walnut tree that matt and his team milled and then built two beautiful live edge benches from (this was from our first project and we use one in our mudroom to this day), years later when we had matt and co build a dry-stack stone retaining wall, neighbors made a daily visit to check on progress and chat up the crew. during another project, an old dilapidated side gate met its match with a wheelbarrow and one of matt’s team took it upon himself to build us a replacement during his free time. we had no idea until we saw it installed.

they take pride in their work and approach every aspect with great care. we’ve sincerely loved our collaborations with refuge design and landscape.

Matt and team did a great job cleaning up our planting beds with mulch and new plants. They also cut and ground the stumps for our old hedges to open up the front of our house and disposed of a bunch of old worn out plantings.... Excuse the grass in my photos... that's my next project, and no doubt Refuge would have regraded and sodded it beautifully had I asked them.

Matt and his team at Refuge installed the landscaping design my friend created for my backyard. In about a week my backyard went from blah to brilliant! Matt and the team helped me work out beautiful details like - stone color and transitions, custom raised garden beds, to creating a little entry pad near one of my fence gates. This is my second time using Refuge, and the team deserves the 5-star rating!

I am so happy I found Refuge for our landscaping project. Matt is fantastic to work with and really helped make my vision come to life!
