Hiring Ayman/Aiman El-Khatib (he gave me both spellings at points) and Blue Planet Landscaping to install a sprinkler system was the worst contractor decision of my life. 4 weeks w/ Ayman for a 4-day project was worse than every other bad contractor experience I’ve had combined. I’m 53.

I hired Ayman to tear out our ugly front lawn, install a sprinkler system and lay sod. The first piece went mostly OK.

Then Ayman showed up with about 20% of the sod needed. After rolling it out, just before 5 pm, he said he’d need $400 cash if I wanted any more sod the next day. He claimed the sod cost 6 times what he’d estimated. After marveling at that, I reluctantly went to an ATM to be able to hand this businessman $400 cash, on 10 minutes notice, so he could operate his business.

The next day, Ayman showed up with another 20% of the sod, which he dumped in my yard, then left. Rolls of sod left for days, which I hand-watered, in August heat. After one day Ayman promised he’d show early to roll sod and never did while ghosting my text, he’d later explain he had a fight with his girlfriend. (Yes, really. Like a child might say.) 5 days later, with a bad back, I rolled the sod out myself, so it wouldn’t die, allowing Ayman to extort more. That sod lived, but it looked bad and way different than the rest of the yard for months.

After this and a long conversation on our porch late one night (by this point, he’d only work weird hours), my wife and I agreed to pay him an additional $3,000, and he delivered and installed the rest of the sod.

Then the next surprise: Ayman had no idea how to install a sprinkler system and had never done so. Several nights over a week, Ayman was in our front yard past midnight (bc he couldn’t show up before 6). He’d dig hole. Then he’d adjust something. Then he’d dig another hole, and play in it w/ lights in the dark. He cut through our sidewalk, which I later learned was unnecessary. He’d fiddle more. This went on and on, all while I’m hand watering my new lawn 3X per day to keep it alive.

Eventually, Ayman filled the holes, patched our sidewalk (still looks bad) and declared victory when he got water to bubble out of sprinklers w/o heads. I pointed out that result was useless. He replied it was my responsibility to buy sprinkler heads, install them and set everything up. I literally laughed in his face. I was livid. (Later, actual professionals confirmed NO ONE besides Ayman does that!)

After another frank conversation, Ayman bought and installed a few sprinkler heads. He demonstrated they worked. They needed fine-tuning, but I said I’d do that, because I needed to be done w/ Ayman. He said if I had any trouble, to call. I wrote him a check for the final payment and hoped I’d never talk to Ayman or see him again.

The good news is I didn’t. The bad news is the next morning, when I tried to turn on sprinklers to adjust them, NOTHING worked. The breaker wasn’t tripped. Dead system. I reluctantly called Ayman and left a detailed message about what was happening. No response. I called again near evening to learn he’d blocked my number.

It was 3 months before I found someone who would clean up Ayman’s mess. I had to pay an actual professional $2,500 to make the system somewhat functional. And during the half day he was here, the professional remarked several times how Ayman did almost everything wrong.

As a contractor, Ayman El-Khatib is an unfunny joke. Whenever he felt compelled to explain why he wasn’t present to do work we agreed upon, if it wasn’t his girlfriend or an alarm or something else child-like, he’d proudly exclaim his education (he was taking classes) and his pilot’s license were the most important things in his life. Which never came up when he was selling his services to install sod and sprinklers.

In short, avoid Ayman / Blue Planet like the plague. I’m hopeful this honest recount of my experience w/ Ayman prevents someone else from hiring him for even a remotely complicated job. Because I promise you, he’s not ready for it, and you won’t know that until it’s too late.

I was introduced to Rafael when OEC hired them to come out to my property to make repairs to my sprinkler system, which OEC damaged while laying fiber-optic line. Rafael surveyed the situation and went to work, repairing the damage properly and in short order. I subsequently hired him to do a *tune-up* to my entire sprinkler system. I am quite pleased with his knowledgeable service. Highly recommend.
