Constraction reviews in Boise, Idaho
-
I used this contractor about a year ago for a simple remodel job that was supposed to be done in about a week. Three weeks later I had to tell his employee to leave because he didn’t know what he was doing. The bath tub was installed incorrectly not in mortar or even level for that matter. I had to replace the cartridge in the shower valve because it was full of solder. The owner never payed me back for it like he said he would. I also had to fix the vanity drain that was installed incorrectly. Next I will be redoing all the drywall and paint because he couldn’t even handle that task. I’m still fixing the remodel myself because the quality was so bad. I should have just taken the time off work to do the job myself in the first place.

In addition to my husband's review & the owner's response. We initially were not going to leave a review at all but in the end we felt like it was the right thing to do. The reason we hired this company was because of the good reviews & the quick response to our inquiry of our bathroom remodel. Unfortunately it has been nothing but fixing things they were hired & paid to do since then. For example. Just recently my husband had to go into the crawl space. While he was in there he found that the vent North Star was hired to move was hooked up to the old duct work incorrectly & the new duct work was not even secured & supported up off the crawl space floor. If it was just me, yeah I would probably be leaving a decent review as our bathroom looks good at surface level. The issues are things that I would never even know to check or think about or look into until years later when they become a huge issue & I have to again hire out the work. Like a slow leak at the sink drain that was installed incorrectly, a toilet that was about to be installed incorrectly (my husband ended up doing it), duct work that was installed incorrectly, the shower head was installed incorrectly, they drywall & paint was piss poor & he even hung the bathroom door wrong. We did not have the luxury of stopping the work to look for a new contractor to come in a finish the job. This is our only bathroom & we have a small child. It had to get done. We never received a $50 check. We will watch for it. ***We did reach out as soon as the brand new cartridge went bad. Remember the $50 you owe us??? That was the first thing! Again, I will watch for your check***

We had North Star completely gut a 1985 kitchen and rebuild into a beautiful modern design. We are very happy with the final result as well as their communications and responsiveness during the remodel. The work crew was professional and completed the work within a reasonable time. Their bid was competitive with other offers.

A kitchen remodeling can be an overwhelming experience but not with North Star Kitchen & Bath Remodeling! I was impressed with the professionalism and communication of the entire team from the initial contact and estimate through the removal of existing kitchen to the installation of the new cabinets, flooring and granite countertop. Also their pricing is reasonable. I strongly recommend North Star Kitchen & Bath Remodel.

North Star remodeled both my bathrooms and I could not be happier with the results! Scott, John, and Chad all did a beautiful job with the work and Holly was so communicative every step of the way. Highly recommend!

Couldn't be more happy with the new Kitchen and Bath. The whole crew did a great job from the tile, electrical, plumbing to the installers. Holly, Scott, John and Chris were all friendly, professional and a pleasure to have in our home.
Thank You,

Scott and his crew remodeled our kitchen. We had showed him a picture of what we had wanted and he matched it perfect . We now have our dream kitchen and couldn’t be happier. He was very professional in doing his work, showed up on time everyday, and did a wonderful job !!!! We will be sure to hire Scott again in the future for our kitchen remodel. Thank you Scott !!

We are extremely pleased with our kitchen remodel done by North Star Kitchen and Bath (Scott Merriman). They did a wonderful job and it was a positive experience for us. North Star did a complete makeover of our kitchen including: eliminating the dropped ceiling, new cabinets, new countertop and backsplash, new flooring, new appliances, addition of a pantry cabinet, and new recessed lighting and under cabinet lighting. Here are some of the things we are most impressed with:
1. We don't consider ourselves to be interior decorators by any means. Scott Merriman spent over an hour with us when he came to give us a bid. He offered many great suggestions then, and through the entire process. We knew he wasn't going to miss anything in the bid, and he continued to offer good suggestions every step of the way.
2. Scott has great communications skills. Whether by email, text, or phone call he kept us informed of the schedule and what would be done when. We really appreciated this.
3. Scott knows what he is doing! He possesses great skills and always shows professionalism. His craftsmanship shows in a super nice product.
4. He shows excellent attention to detail. We always knew he wanted to make sure we were happy with his work.
5. At the end of the workday he and his crew cleaned up after themselves, never leaving our home in a bigger mess than necessary.
6. Overall, we couldn't be happier with our new kitchen. The cabinets and all materials are good quality, workmanship is excellent, and the job was done within the time frame he estimated.
7. We highly recommend North Star Kitchens! You will be glad you chose them to do your kitchen or bathroom upgrade. -
Scott and his team completed a major master bathroom facelift fall 2020. I am as pleased today with the workmanship as when I first saw the completed transformation. Any project has unforeseen challenges and Scott and his crew worked through them all in a professional manner.Scott’s dedication to quality work and customer satisfaction at a reasonable price was certainly our experience. Without hesitation we would use him again in future projects.

The team from North Star was amazing. They knew what was expected and came in and got the job done. The were very attentive to anything we pointed out or asked for. They were professional and respectful of the house and my husband and I. I would highly recommend them for any remodeling you are thinking about doing. Our kitchen is amazing and the new floor is wonderful. We couldn't be happier. Thanks Scott!

Scott was an excellent choice for updating our kitchen. Very easy to work with and a very hard worker. All was completed on time. Scott is very honest and basically does all the work between him and his helper Steve. Nothing was contracted out except for the counter top and black splash which was done by Cutting Edge. One of Scott's main attributes is he keeps you updated through the whole job, which I personally appreciated. His helper is very respectful and does a very good job. He's in the learning stages and looks for perfection. All in all I recommend North Star and if any more work is to be done here we will hired Scott back to do the work. By the way he loves to fish!!! I have hired the owner Scott for multiple jobs and he always gives me a great price. I'm always impressed with the quality of his work and his vast knowledge of all things construction. I've seen first hand many of his remodels and can't believe how amazing they always look. If you want your dream kitchen to come to life you NEED to call North Star. Scott's wife Holly is also extremely helpful and nice! All around a great company to work with!

Do not recommend. I sent the following to the owners and all I got back was "Thanks for the feedback" so wanted to share.
Now that my bathroom is finally completed, I wanted to take the opportunity to provide feedback on my experience working with North Star and to explain why I have decided not to proceed with your company for my spare bathroom. Regrettably, my experience has been far from satisfactory, and it pains me to think I invested so much money into this project.
Here are some key concerns that I feel compelled to bring to your attention:
Project Timeline: The time it took to complete the bathroom renovation was excessive and beyond what I would consider reasonable. I understand that scheduling can be a challenge, but the delays, especially at the tail end of the project, were inexcusable. On several occasions, I received conflicting updates regarding when work would be completed. If I could, I would invoice you for the significant amount of time I had to spend rearranging my work schedule to accommodate your company. I made a point to be home most of the time and available for questions, concerns, and conversations.
Incorrect Billing for Cabinets: At one point, your team tried to bill me for the wrong cabinets, which was both frustrating and unprofessional.
Poor Planning with Drywall and Fixtures: The contractor cut holes in the drywall without consulting me or checking the placement of the new fixtures. I specifically communicated the locations for the new light fixture, medicine cabinet, and mirror and even labeled the boxes. Despite this, no one bothered to open the boxes or consult me before cutting into the drywall. This resulted in an error that you later charged me to fix, and I had to repeatedly follow up with your office before the charge was removed.
Flooring Installation: The LVP flooring was laid in the wrong direction, which is now noticeable and looks out of place. Unfortunately, by the time I noticed this, over half of the flooring was already installed, and I was too exhausted from the ongoing issues to address it. The installation was done without my input, and the direction of the flooring should have been discussed beforehand. Additionally, the behavior of Scott during this phase was unprofessional, including swearing loudly, which made the situation even more uncomfortable.
Mirror Installation: The mirror was installed without regard for where the backsplash tile was to be placed, resulting in the mirror hanging over the tile and not being flush with the wall. I did not complain about this at the time, but again, it highlights the lack of attention to detail and communication with myself and the tile installer.
Lack of Courtesy and Cleanliness: The lack of professionalism and courtesy from your team was astounding. There was a significant mess left outside my home by the tile installer, a cluttered garage, and insulation carelessly left in a cupboard. More concerning was the fact that during a cold week with temperatures in the 20s and 30s, there were exposed holes in my ceiling and floor without any attempt to cover them up and mitigate the cold. On top of this, Scott’s behavior was often dismissive and at times downright rude.
There is more I could mention, but I feel I've already spent far too much time addressing these issues. To finish, I wanted to share that I work with and manage Homeowners Associations, and as part of my job, I interact with hundreds of contractors each year and thousands of homeowners. In the past few weeks alone, I’ve received multiple inquiries from people seeking recommendations for remodel companies. Rest assured, I have informed them to avoid North Star.
I trust you will take this feedback seriously. This experience has been deeply disappointing, and I will not be engaging your company for any further work. -
From estimate to finish, everything was perfect. I could not be happier with kitchen. Scott and John were the kind of people I wanted in my home. They communicated every step of the way. Chad did the tile work and it is stunning. They finished on time and cleaned up after themselves. If a remodel can be awesome...this one was. A wonderful Christian Family Business! Thank You North Star ( I wish I had taken before pics)

North Star did a great job on our bathroom remodel! Holly kept things moving quickly and Jon was great to work with. I highly recommend them.
-
Contracted with North Star to remove a smaller enclave bathtub, reroute the plumbing to accommodate this large KOHLER stand along soaking tub. North Star did a fantastic job, pricing was reasonable for the work done, demo, plumbing, tile work, and install of this 260lb bathtub. Very pleased. Would use them again !

Scott and Jon did a great job turning a wasted space in our basement into a half bath, utilities closet and den. Pricing was very fair and Holly did a fantastic job communicating along the way.

I wanted to give a shout out to the team at Northstar for the great remodel they did on our master bath. We went from vintage '99 to modern and the results are outstanding. The pictures tell the story. Scott and Holly are great to deal with, both are responsive and customer focused. John was great to work with and Chad is excellent with the tile work. All took the time to discuss what we wanted, give good input on what might or might not work and gave good alternative options. They discussed next steps and were willing to support design changes as we went along. Ultimately they nailed the vision we had for the end result. This was a tough year due to covid and we had some delays that were outside of their control but overall the project was very smooth, on budget, and we are very happy with the results. Highly recommended.

North Star was worth every penny for the thorough and professional job they did remodeling our bathroom. Our bathroom required complete gutting and a laundry area conversion into a bathtub. The staff were on time, hard working and courteous. The job ran into unexpected curveballs which were handled with creative solutions. We were welcomed and involved with new decisions along the way. The office was communicative and scheduled the progress as quickly and tightly as we felt possible. We are happy with the outcome of our new bathroom and highly recommend North Star to you.

My husband and I hired North Star to do the remodel of our kitchen following a water damage event. From the beginning, we liked how communicative Scott and his team (especially Holly) were and, thankfully (unlike many other contractors we've worked with), they remained responsive, prompt, and attentive throughout the project. Their subcontractor, John, was always extremely punctual, pleasant, quiet, and did great work for us. The team was also extremely understanding and patient when we needed to make scheduling adjustments and with general questions about the process. Despite the circumstances, we're so happy with our kitchen and really couldn't be more satisfied with the job North Star did for us from top to bottom. Five stars well earned :)
