Update to a previous negative review. -- Background -- A prior misunderstanding where the options and issues were not sufficiently explained. -- The details for anyone who want to know -- Old (25+ years) SubZero that my wife likes. There are 2 separate compressors, 1 for the freezer and 1 for the refrigerator. The refrigerator compressor was on the fritz. The tech who came out was aware the old compressor was a model that uses a legally restricted R12 refrigerant (Freon). Current technology requires either replacing all refrigeration components to be compatible with the new refrigerant (R134a) or, waiting to order a replacement compressor, and then replacing this with a special refrigerant blend (R414). While the previous tech may have been right, at the moment, to replace the entire refrigerator system (evaporator, heat exchanger, compressor, etc.) for the new R134a refrigerant, and this costs $2,500, the options and reason weren't explained. As a previous AC guy many years ago, and a current technology consultant, the experience and ability to search the internet clarified things. With a little time to explain the differences and options we could have resolved this earlier. ================= After a call with Mark Thomas, at Thomas Service, we clarified the issues and recognized it was a misunderstanding. We worked through the problem to come up with a compressor replacement, with a special blended refrigerant (R414) and a new compressor. The R414 is compatible with the oil inside the system, and the existing components, of the restricted R12 system. It was the right option for me being able to wait. For most people, it is not an option when a refrigerator is out to be able to wait for a couple weeks for a different solution. In my case, the compressor was intermittent meaning it would keep the refrigerator cold most of the time but you had to be careful and watch it closely. This is not usually an option in most situations so the full replacement of all of the components to go to R134a, for the original $2,500, was not wrong. Just to clarify, Thomas Service did not give me any special pricing or discount, and I didn't ask for one. So this change in review is not because they tried to buy my business afterward. This change in review was because of a misunderstanding and because they do try to make things right if there is an issue.
