Although we didn't end up working directly with Grasstains, Matt the owner was quick to respond to my inquiry, came to my house and gave a fantastic consult, even connected me with another person who was best for the scale of my project (very small and niche). Will definitely consider them for future projects!

We had a great experience working wit Grasstains on our backyard renovation. Our project manager Caleb was very communicative and helpful throughout all phases of our project, including planning/ pricing, and the on-site crew was top notch professional and very friendly. The job was completed ahead of schedule schedule and exactly within our budget and we are very happy clients! Would gladly recommend Grasstains to anyone looking for a backyard reno/ landscaping project and we will definitely use them again on future projects!

Matt and Grasstains had a crew come to my property to modify/enhance our backyard.
Adsemi, Guiremo, Adolfo, Carlos, Humberto and Mesiel all did a wonderful job. They communicated all throughout the project.
The team was prompt, understood the task at hand and were very mindful of the surrounding vegetation and gardens. They were able to complete the project without disturbing already completed/established landscape.

We contacted Grasstains for help designing and landscaping our front and back yards. They were so helpful listening to what we wanted and what kind of budget we have and worked hard to get us what we wanted with what we can afford! They also drew out plans for things we'd like in the future so we can come back to it and do more work with a cohesive look. Communication has been great, the workers are very polite and efficient. Overall a great experience and have recommended to our friends.

We hired Grasstains to completely redo our backyard based off a design from our landscape designer. From the beginning Matt and his team were very professional and answered all our questions regarding timeline and cost. They installed a beautiful patio and wall as well as a new fire pit. They also took a tricky part of the yard and turned it into a beautiful, raised bed area with surrounding rock wall. We had them install lighting and an irrigation system as well. The team was great to work with and we were so happy with the results! We love our new backyard.

Grasstains was amazing to work with all throughout the process! Brianna, Chris and Geraldo took such great care of us. They transformed our overgrown, unmanageable yards to a place that we (and our dogs) actually like spending time and it’s easy to care for. We undertook a largescale renovation of a landscaped courtyard for Parkrose High School. With this project designed to beneffit students with disabilities, Grasstains took the time to listen to our needs and helped us to create accessible pathways, native plantings and a beautiful koi fish pond. They stayed in constant communication and we can confidently say that their projects are built to last! Many, many students will benefit from the revitalization of this space.

We’re so so happy with the work Grasstains did on our yard! They didn’t just install sod, they amended our soil, made design recommendations that fit how we planned to use the yard, and went above and beyond in ensuring our yard was set up for us to enjoy long-term with as little maintenance as possible. From the initial meeting with Matt to working with Stetson, Alex, and the rest of the crew it was a positive and easy experience. Can’t recommend them enough.

Super-duper!

After years of a suboptimal irrigation setup, we finally decided to convert from spray to drip. Our yard is no grass, all plants. Chris, their irrigation tech, was great--the techiest tech who ever teched a tech. But seriously, Chris was adept, polite, timely, patient with questions, and eager to share knowledge. He left our yard looking better than when began. Sally, who I believe runs the office, was very nice, always quick to return my emails and was also very knowledgeable.

This is a big weight off our shoulders. Most importantly, our plants are getting proper attention and we're saving water.

if I could rate this landscape business, any lower, I would… it would be -666... It was a nightmare experience summer Of 2024 for a landscape cleanup and what was two have taken four consecutive days dragged into several months because they overcommitted, Didn’t prioritize properly, Incompetence on those that did the work because they Didn’t know what they were doing And many days were a no-show without calling.. Would advise anyone looking for a landscape business to bypass this one and find one that’s more competent and knows what they’re doing,, Can identify plants from weeds, Listens to the homeowner. I am still cleaning up from this nightmare

Matt and his team are great. Took on a pretty big grant funded rain garden project at Creston Elementary and then helped me get some great trees for my Church.

Grasstains is wonderful! They did a super dog friendly, dog centric yard for our dog daycare. They were friendly, easy to work with and communicative. I love being able to support local businesses! I highly recommend Matt and his team.

My backyard (NE Portland) has always been a complete mud pit during the rainy season. As in: I had to put on galoshes to take my puppy outside. Matt came out for a consult and got back to me super quickly with an estimate for a drainage system (dry well and French drains). The estimate was super reasonable, and they were able to fit the job into their schedule a few weeks earlier than expected. The work was done quickly, the crew was so nice and helpful, and the results are fantastic. The yard isn’t a swamp anymore and I’ve retired the galoshes. Highly recommend this company!!

I used Grasstains for some seasonal refresh work (bark and gravel), and some other minor projects and could not be happier with the work! Communication with Matt was quick and clear, and he worked with me on my budget and timing. Chris and Geraldo did the work day-of and were fast, friendly (appreciate the irrigation tips, Chris!), and left my yard looking like it was freshly landscaped. Will definitely use them again for future projects!

Grasstains installed new gardens in our back and front yards. It was a year of challenging weather but their crew persevered and worked hard each week. Matt was a consistent source of support and information, addressing the usual problems and being on site when things like boulders were being delivered and installed. He checked in frequently and helped us prepare our neighbors for things they might find annoying during the work. Best of all, we were very happy with the results--a beautiful garden that continues to thrive.

We couldn't be happier with our decision to work with Grasstains! From our very first meeting several months ago, their team was incredibly patient and supportive. As complete landscaping newbies, we had a vague vision for our front yard, backyard, and parking strip, and they expertly guided us through the entire process. The initial site visit and design they provided were immensely helpful, giving us a clear picture of the possibilities and empowering us to decide how to proceed.
We ultimately hired them for the full project, and they were fantastic. The design process was iterative and collaborative, and the demo and build-out were handled with professionalism. Communication was very good throughout the project. While we had a few different points of contact which was occasionally confusing, it may have been a result of our own extended timeline.
One piece of advice for future clients: work closely with their project coordinator on any city permits. We had a small challenge with a street tree removal permit, and ensuring that is secured before work begins is key.
Where the Grasstains team truly excelled was in their creative problem-solving and flexibility. They used our initial plans as a foundation but found brilliant ways to improve upon them. For example, they proactively redesigned the sprinkler system layout, which actually saved us money from our discretionary budget! In another instance, after leveling the ground, a gap was exposed in an existing garden bed. Without even being asked, the team found matching cedar, cut it to size, and patched it perfectly. It's that kind of above-and-beyond service that truly sets them apart. They were also incredibly responsive and accommodating, allowing us to expand the project scope to include our front yard, which now has a beautiful layout that we absolutely love.
Overall, we recommend Grasstains to anyone looking for a dedicated and creative landscaping partner.

Brianna and the rest of Grasstain were a pleasure to work with in our backyard paver project! There were a couple of paver product mix ups during our project but Brianna and the installers corrected the issues in a timely manner and left our yard looking great!

Grasstains crew are top notch! They have really great communication and were even super helpful on a simple repair for our work a year after install date. They could have put us on the back-burner, but they treated the issue with as much attention and timeliness as if we were new customers.

I hired Grasstains to redesign my yard, and honestly, they knocked it out of the park. From the first meeting, they were super easy to talk to and really listened to what I wanted--even when I wasn't totally sure myself and changed my mind a few times.

They took my scattered ideas and turned them into a beautiful, low-maintenance space that fits my style and actually works for how I use my yard. They mixed in native plants, added some great hardscaping, and even built a rain garden that will help with some drainage issues.

The whole crew was always on time, respectful, and knowledgeable. Communication was solid the whole way through, and there were no surprise costs or delays.

Grasstains LLC came a week earlier than we anticipated. So nice to get a good start. The crew worked hard and did some onsite design work that turned out wonderfully. The raised beds now have their first crop started in them.

It was a HOT week or two. The team was led by Ray Edwards, the onsite supervisor, there were some changes to original plan that had to be made. He had good ideas and creative solutions.

The crew worked hard and everyone had good attitudes. The crew, Francisco Ochoa-Villega, Charlie Painter, and Matthew Kienberger were great at all tasks given, including spot welding the edges of the path, and some irrigation repair. All skill needs were represented. And thanks for the cleanup. It was good to see it at the end of each day and the end of the project.

Managers, Stetson Lancaster and Dustin Harms were available to come and oversee the project and problems as they came up. Their materials ordering was great, and when there were supply chain problems their solutions were also good. Any concern was discussed, decided upon together and completed as decided.
